The first stamps of Afghanistan are known as the Lion Head stamps, after the lion’s head which appears in the centre of the stamps. The Lion stamps were issued between 1871 and 1891. They are dated using the Islamic solar calendar, the first issue is dated 1288 (1871 our calendar). I have purchased the stamps below from a dealer a few years ago. I can't give any catalogue numbers as I'm still trying to figure them out so any help would be greatly appreciated. 1871 - 1874 1877 - 1878 1 Rupee on white laid paper 1890 - 1 Rupee 1884 - 1885 Thin coloured paper 1881 - 1 Rupee on thick brow paper (strip of 3 ) 1889 - 1990 - 28 mm diam 1891 - 2 Ab 1875 - 1876 1881
