For Hannukah........today the 3rd candle will be lit. Tomorrow we will go to my daughter's to light the 4th candle and eat eat doughnuts & Latkes (fried potato cakes). The stamps here, from 1996, were the first joint issue between the USA and Israel. Designed by American Graphic Artist Hannah Smotrich. The tab on the Israel Stamp shows a spinning top (Sevivon or Dreidel) which has a fascinating history. www.israel21c.org/everything-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about-the-hanukkah-dreidel/The USA version was subsequently re-issued on 4 occasions with denominations reflecting postage rate increases.

a lesson to be learned .......... these two Israeli values show very noticeable pink staining along the top and right hand side ................... Both stamps were soaked off paper - the paper being the air mail envelope itself, and as we know such envelopes have blue and red chevrons forming a border around the outer edge of the envelope. So, the pink you see here is the red colour having bled from the chevron border onto the stamps. !!! Knowing that some reds and pinks can bleed, I should have been forewarned - good job they aren't 'seahorses' !

Progress continues with my Israel collection of used singles hinged in a Scott Specialty album to about 1979. The contents of the bulk lot from which I am transfering was amazingly complete and in great condition. One item missing was Scott number 9, the 1000 mils Dor Ivri, which I recently purchased; an exceptionally attractive example with corner cancellation.

I thought I'd resurrect this thread, given the horrific events unfolding in Israel and Gaza. I just received this cover from a dealer. There's nothing political about it, but current events made me wonder about the role of stamps in times of conflict. I've been reorganizing my US collection and noted how few stamps were actually issued during the years the US was engaged WWII in contrast to the years after. Is there a thread on stamps and conflict propaganda?

It will be interesting to see when this horror is over what sort of stamps Israel will publish to commemorate the events that are currently unfolding. I doubt a tragedy of this scale can be represented by a single issue. I await the same sort of issue(s) from Ukraine if and when they are successful pushing Russia back into its own borders.
I suppose the curse "May you live in interesting times" is reality for these war-torn areas of the world.

This sheet was issued during the 'Israel 98' Stamp Exhibition in Tel Aviv. The event logo can be seen in the centre. It shows the aircraft used by the new state during the 1948 War of Independence. The Tete-Beche sheet was designed by T.Kurz.

2004 Ottoman Clocktowers set of 5. Designed by Zina and Zvika Roitman. Values of those shown here are NIS1.30, from sheets. A prestige booklet was also issued to coincide with the National Exhibition 'Telabul'. The values were different.

2008 Jerusalem of Gold. Naomi Shemer wrote 'Jerusalem of Gold' for the Israel Song festival in May 1967, just after the 19th Independence Day celebrations. The song is based on a Basque lullaby and old Jewish Poetry with references to the exile and a longing for Jerusalem, the Western Wall and Shuk. A few weeks later, the Six Day war broke out and on June 7th, the Western Wall and the Old City were freed from Jordanian Occupation. The Souvenir Sheet was issued in 2008 for the World Stamp Championship and International Exhibition and is based on the song and the poetry. Shown is a special pack containing the Jerusalem Reunification sheet stamp from the previous year and the Souvenir sheet which contains the highest denominated Israel Stamp since the currency devaluation of 1985. The sheet contains 22-carat gold leaf. The Imperf sheet was only available in the (very expensive) Exhibition Programme, a limited edition.

2010 Israel Birds sheetlet (with tabs) including the Hoopoe, Israel's National Bird. The Hoopoe was chosen after a survey in 2008. And yes, we see them every day they are delightful to watch. The set was also the theme of a Prestige Booklet issued at the same time.

For the International Stamp Exhibition in 2008, Israel Post issued 2 Prestige Booklets aimed at Youth. With hoards of schoolchildren attending shows here in Israel, and with the items being offered at a cut-price, the idea was a good one. Something I would like to see elsewhere. One of the booklets was entitled 'Noah's Ark and the Flood' and one of the panes included was similar to the regular issue S/S but in Self-Adhesive format and yellow border. With wavy-line die-cuts. They quickly sold out !! Here is the Souvenir Sheet Pane.

Back in 1992 there was a very nice set of Birds Definitive stamps which were issued in sheets. For the 'China 96' Philatelic Exhibition, Israel produced a very elegant Souvenir Sheet with those same Birds stamps but with Silver borders instead of white, and with different values. The effect is just beautiful.

Israel Post re-issued the Albert Einstein stamp from 2005 in a Miniature Sheet for 'Jerusalem 2006' the National Stamp Exhibition. The only change was the value from NIS3.30 to NIS8.20 although there was a mark-up for the sheet, as is usual for Israel S/S's to NIS12.00 !!

2013 issue 'Postal Vehicles in Israel' showing some of the older types. Good looking sheet, this Imperf version was inserted into the catalogue for the National Stamp Exhibition held at the Exhibition Centre in Tel Aviv. It was the only source. (and expensive !!)

As we are approaching the end of the celebration of Passover, what better sheet to show than this 2010 'Parting of the Red Sea' Miniature Sheet. Issued for the National Exhibition held in Jerusalem, the sheet was printed Imperf in limited numbers for insertion into the show catalogue.
