No, it's nobody's fault. My point was that in the UK the postman has to enter the dog's territory in order to deliver letters to the letterbox in the front door. In the USA the mailman doesn't have as big a problem, because the mailbox is on the edge of the territory.
Of course, cats are an even greater danger to postmen. They demoralise them by staring at them contemptuously.
Especially those big ones in Africa & elsewhere.

if the fault is mostly not the owners, and apparently it's not the dog's fault, then since the blame must be laid at someone's door (no pun intended), does this suggest that it's the postman's fault? - after all there's no one else to blame. I'd suggest that withholding mail from problem addresses would soon resolve this one. Posties in UK used to have this option if a dog was loose at the delivery address, don't know if it still exists. Write "dog loose" on the item/s at the delivery address & initial it/them then return the items to the delivery office for a later attempt at delivery. I marked some mail once, when delivering to a farm, "bulls loose" they were out in a field which had to be cycled through to get to the farmhouse. Got 1/2 way across the field when the bulls came after me. (That's no bull either).

drblade , if your post is on topic, do we assume that there's a dog in the post box? That would certainly explain everything

This series reminds me when we went on a search for a stamp featuring a kitchen sink (which was eventually found). My cat also likes to curl himself up in our washbasins in the bathroom, while he waits for me to get out of the shower.

Adopt a Pet (Canada, 2013): I used one of the stamps in this souvenir sheet; will replace the image once I get a new complete sheet. This is how the complete sheet looks like, together with my drawing of a black cat 'walking out of the cage': (This 'philagraph' was used as a shipping label. But I didn't photograph the postmarked result at the moment of mailing the parcel.)
