also from your Dec 6 scan (Rod may have mentioned these, but his comments may have been deleted):
1) Toronto - swimmer: issued 1923 or thereabouts. There were 12 stamps in the series, and they are most commonly seen overprinted to advertise the 1923 edition of the Canadian National Exhibition, which was held Aug 25 - Sept 8, 1923.
2) Niagara Falls: this was from a series of 24 stamps all in blue, depicting different scenes across Canada. The series was titled "Our Beautiful Empire", and there were also sheets of 24 stamps (also in blue) from Great Britain, Australia, and South Africa. Produced in 1938 for Samuel Jones & Co of London by Posterstamp Publicity Ltd (London).
3) CFYC: Produced by P.M. Bryant Company of Chicago from 1925-1927. CFYC was the call letters of a radio station in Vancouver, BC. Over 600 different stamps and a handy album were marketed directly to stamp collectors / radio enthusiasts, who were encouraged to paste the stamp in the album only if they actually heard the radio station broadcast. This was to directly compete with similar EKKO verified radio reception stamps, which were produced by the EKKO Company, also of Chicago, which were marketed to radio stations rather than the public.
4) Canadian Pacific Travel series: issued in 1938 or earlier to encourage travel on Canadian Pacific trains, boats and airplanes. There were 10 different designs, either perforated or rouletted, for a total of 20 different stamps in the series.
5) St Dunstan's: I believe this was from a hospital in England that helped WWI veterans who had been blinded by shrapnel.
6) ER/GR medallion sticker: issued to commemorate the 1939 Royal visit of the King & Queen to Canada and USA.

quick answer: poster stamps were a cheap and efficient means to advertise your company/product/event on correspondence. They got very popular about 1910-1920. In the 1930's, when companies discovered advertising on radio, they started to get less popular, and when TV advertising took hold in the 1950-1960's, they continued their decline.

Field Guide to the Cinderella Stamps of canada (R G Lafreniere 2012 Bird Bear Press ISBN : 978-0-9878047-0-9 ) second printing Not Listed in the Catalogue: IAMAT (Toronto) Stamp featuring Schistosomiasis. (Skisto-somiasis) You get a schistosoma infection through contact with contaminated water. The parasite in its infective stages is called a cercaria. It swims freely in open bodies of water. On contact with humans, the parasite burrows into the skin, matures into another stage (schistosomula), then migrates to the lungs and liver, where it matures into the adult form. The adult worm then migrates to its preferred body part, depending on its species. These areas include the bladder, rectum, intestines, liver, portal venous system (the veins that carry blood from the intestines to liver), spleen, and lungs. Schistosomiasis is not usually seen in the United States. It is common in many tropical and subtropical areas worldwide.

This Canadian cinderella was shown on the 2nd page that went astray, so I thought I would post it again. Unitrade shows that it was issued in 1928 for British Columbia airlines.

What's the story with the Canada 14-cent red parliament stamps with the overprint? I don't suppose they would be valid for postage, would they?

Funny, I can't remember what I posted on those missing pages. Oh well, can start again fresh I suppose. Here is a pair I picked up yesterday, visiting a stamp shop on my lunch hour. The envelope said 'Maxwell House Famous Canadians' I suppose the coffee maker gave these away at some point. Wonder how many were in the set? These show Sir Alexander Galt and Sir Leonard Tilley, a Canadian politicians and two of our 'Fathers of Confederation'. EDIT - A quick google search nets me the answer to my question. Here's a link to a Montreal Gazette newspaper page with contest details surrounding these labels. Circa 1972. Unfortunately the link below does not take you directly to the page (like the google search did) The contest ad is on page 67 and 68 of the paper the link accesses, if you're interested. news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1946&dat=19720422&id=TsUtAAAAIBAJ&sjid=j6EFAAAAIBAJ&pg=5898,2267942

Maxwell House. Not listed from what I can see, perhaps you may wish to email Mr. Lafreniere at Bird Bear Press he may wish to add your example to his next edition.

What's the story with the Canada 14-cent red parliament stamps with the overprint? I don't suppose they would be valid for postage, would they? Guess: Possibly depends on the postmaster, or the cancelling equipment at point of transfer, they may have slipped through, albeit, I have never seen them on cover. The persons who produced them, possibly tried. Technically not valid as they are "used" with a non official opt.

James and Rod. Thank you thank you. I've been wondering for years about the nature of those Famous Canadians stamps. And then suddenly, there it is - instant coffee promo from 1972. I'll certainly include that in the Field Guide now that the story has been discovered. Cheers!!!!

Hi James. No need for a scan. I've got about a dozen different sheets with each of the 8 most common stamps already. But if you come across a Clifford Sifton stamp from that series, I'd like to know. From the Maxwell House promo ad, only 12 were issued, and they were worth $1000 each. Bet there aren't too many of those left sitting in the backs of some old stamp albums!

Clifford Sifton worth $1000! and in 1972 money? ? Jinkies, I'd better start drinking more instant coffee....oh wait, I'm 40 years too late. I'll stick with my perked. I'll keep my eyes peeled though ('specially with all the caffeine)

Frog, lovely collection indeed. A polite suggestion, and to all posters, if you add a little text to your post, eg "Canada Vancouver 1936 Golden Jubilee" then this acts as a pointer to "The Stamp Forum" for people browsing on Google. You never know what responses you can gain "The field guide to the Cinderella Stamps of Canada" Page 10 Catalogue # cc0250 1936 vancouver Golden Jubilee (Magenta set) (differs slightly to the brown set) 56 stamps CV $5 each Brown set "rarely seen" Also Exist : 1936 gold jubilee Multicolour set (5)

Wow! beautiful stuff FirstFrog, excellent.
From "The Field guide to the Cinderella stamps of Canada" R.G. Lafreniere.
Cat # cc3835 (Page 102)
Societe Saint-Jean Baptiste (1924-1997)
After several requests for commemorative stamps being declined by Canada Post, SSJB decided to print their own .
There exists a catalogue specifically for this range of emmissions. Labels CV $2 to $20 depending on rarity
PS: The Catalogue or producers take the cynosure of the labels as "characters and events marking the history of French Canada" The labels exist in (up to) 6 different colours.

Here's a nice Canada cinderella I found recently with the slogan "Buy Canadian and Empire Products". Try to guess which year it was issued. (Hint: which countries were part of the British Empire at the time?)
