One of my favorite stamps has always been the original 3-pence beaver as designed by Sir Sandford Fleming. Today the final piece of the puzzle arrived in the mail, #12 the 3-pence beaver in red, perf 11.75. The new acquisition is centered "VG" but I like the overall presentation, the cancel is sharp and still allows much of the original design to be appreciated. Here's the spread, featuring a selection of my 154+ year old beaver stamps. UL - #1 - 3d imperf on laid paper, issued Apr 23, 1851 UR - #4 - 3d imperf on wove paper, issued Apr 17, 1852 LL - #12 - 3d perf 11.75 on wove paper, issued Jan 1859 LR - #15 - 5ยข perf 11.75 on wove paper, issued Jul 1859 #12 didn't come with a certificate of authenticity, so I am thinking of sending it off to the Greene Foundation. I bought it off a great eBay seller, so I have no doubts it is genuine, but it's still nice to have the paperwork for a hard to find piece like this.

Next I guess I will start working on filling in some of the faces around the beaver colony. Most of them are pretty pricy though, so it will be a slow piece-at-a-time kind of process. In the meantime I need to fill some holes in my modern books and perhaps I will start to focus on Newfoundland and the provinces a little more.

I have been saying that for some time.Seems every time I vow to work on NFL or the provinces I find some other Canada piece I want. Here's my mia's #3,10,13,31,32,63 and we know two of those are impossible.

Congratulations! I've only got the last one. Perhaps the opportunity for a New Years resolution (if I could afford it).

Well #12 came back from the Greene Foundation and it's certified "Canada Scott No. 12, used, genuine, vertical crease at left." The crease isn't really visible from the front, so overall the stamp looks great in my book. Nice to have the verification on this hard to find and somewhat easy to fake issue!

Certainly one of my favourite stamps. Here is an Advertising cover I purchased recently with the Gouge Flaw on the stamp. Scott #15 1865 5c Beaver, pre-paying the 5c Domestic Rate from MONTREAL to RICHMOND C.E., tied to cover with a Montreal duplex in black ink on a yellow cover. There is a MONTREAL PM MR 21 68 despatch and RICHMOND MR 23 1868 double arc receiver on reverse. The cover has an advertisement from the Granby Red Slate Company across the full top portion of the envelope. The Large Queen issue was due to be released only 10 days afterwards on April 1, 1868 when the postage rates would change to from 5c to only 3c for a domestic letter. The stamp is a strong and clear example of the Plate Position 23 Gouge Flaw (Whitworth`s Plate Flaw 123), a large mark in the upper right above OS in POSTAGE.
