Tonight's item is one of those curious items that raise a smile when the collection is shown at clubs etc [Moderator edit - image link is broken and irretrievable]An impression from a Universal machine used at Halifax Yorkshire with the central part of the 7 wavy lines being a removable section. The point of note here is that the date is shown as 1944 twice These types of items all add a little novelty value to a collection, provide good talking points and get the viewer checking their items ... Enjoy .... Allan

Indeed. ...and, I think, any collector, following this thread in length, will (by your work) be encouraged to stop the knee-jerk reaction, to "soak everything off piece" and reassess, what they have. Some of these scarcer postmarks, full strikes on mutilated stationery, can increase a stamp's value from 20c to dollars, even tens of dollars.

Tonight's item is Streatham S W 16 [Moderator edit - image links are broken and irretrievable]The latest entry is the machine mark shown above dated the 6 November 1932 There is already an earlier entry with the same text as shown below ... Note that the CDS section on this earlier example has arcs on the inside ... The earliest mark I have at this time for this office is the following .. The details for this office are as follows ... Post office by 1832 1855 Mrs.Ann Withnell Postmistress Money Order Office 1 October 1857 Transfered from the Souther district to the SW 1 April 1868 Telegraph Office 1870 Code used = SUT Reduced from a Telegraph sub office to a branch office 1 January 1889 - located at Shrubbery Rd Located at 180 High Rd by 1908 Located at 136 High Rd 1 October 1928 Changed from a Branch office to a Company Franchise Post Office in W.H.Smith, 180-182,High St.15 November 2007 Still at this location 2014 ---------------------------------- At this rate, my target of 85% illustrated should be well within reach, although the number of mark that still require an illustration is still over the 3,600 mark Getting this down to 3,500 may prove to be harder than first thought .... but I will continue to work on this and see where we stand at the end of the year. My other hobby is going to take up a fair amount of my time soon, but I will keep cracking on with the listings here ... Allan

Biddulph, Congleton of Cheshire. I had never heard of it before. This was a difficult one, to get my head around. BIDDULPH lies 4.5 miles from CONGLETON, and, yet, Congleton has a Biddulph Street with a Post Office in it. Both could have laid claim to the hammer. I was scratching my head there.
