I am trying to complete my collection of first day covers for the 1945 U.S. Iwo Jima issue (Scott 929 - the stamp used on my avatar) that are listed in Mellone's Specialized Cachet Catalog of First Day Covers of the 1940s (Volume I). I continue to look for the following cachets, listed by Mellone number (see Aug 31, 2016 post for images): ME13 - Wm. Linto ME14 - Designer Unknown ME15 - F. Sanders ME28 - Dorothy Knapp ME32 - W.G. Crosby ME33 - W.G. Crosby ME38 - Mae Weigand ME40 - W.B. Thomason ME41 - E.J. Henriques ME42 - Designer Unknown ME49 - Coz Art ME54 - Cachet Craft/Staehle ME55 - Designer Unknown ME56 - Designer Unknown ME57 - Designer Unknown ME59 - Designer Unknown Ideally, I'd like to acquire each cachet with both the large and small dial CDS (hand and machine cancels) but my primary goal is one cover of each listed cachet. Here is my collection as it currently stands: [NOTE: This thread was originally created in the Wanted section of the Buy, Sell, Trade category.]

It's been quite some time since I added anything to this collection. This cover arrived today -- the copy of Mellone's that I have indicates the designer is unknown (ME-60) but a cover with the same cachet and no border is attributed to Detroit-Ludwig. I wouldn't normally have considered buying a cover in this condition (scuffs and smears on the cachet); however, in the 3 plus years I've been trying to build the collection, this is the first one with this cachet that I've seen listed on ebay. I'm just glad to have it and happy that I didn't have to pay too much to get it!

When it rains, it pours. I was able to break away for a short while and stop in on SPRINGPEX 2016 (which will be the only DC Metro area exhibition this year due to NAPEX being suspended in deference to NEW YORK 2016). I was able to fill two more spaces with the ones below. I could have added my first Mae Weigard (929-38) but the $300 price tag was more than I was prepared to spend.

Another has been scratched from the list! I saw this cover listed at auction but thought the opening bid was too high so I allowed the auction to lapse in the hope that the seller would relist it at a lower price. He relisted it at the same opening and, unlike the first auction, someone placed a bid on it. Did I mention that this was only the second time that I had seen this item listed since I had begun checking the ebay listings daily (I bought my first Iwo Jima FDCs on May 27, 2011)? I went back and looked at my records and saw that the previous listing of 929-61 sold for $180.50 on Nov 18, 2014. Needless to say, I needed to be prepared to pay dearly for this one but, to my good fortune, I won the item at a price well below what I had been prepared to pay. She is a card, rather than a cover, measuring slightly over 5"x8.25" and bears the same basic design that Staehle used on cachet 929-53, less the silver border.

With yesterday's disappointment now behind me, I was able to get to Fairfax for day 2 of Americover 2016. The turnout was far greater than I had expected and it was often difficult to find a seat at the dealers' tables. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any of the 20 cachets that I'm still missing and only picked up the Staehle shown below (ME-53) to complete that set of cancels.

It occurred to me that, for those who don't have access to Mellone's Specialized Cachet Catalog of First Day Covers of the 1940s (Vol I), it might be helpful to see images of the 20 cachets on my want list. Here are the cachets that I am still missing:

Another cover on my want list (William Linto's only Iwo cachet (ME-13) shown below) recently escaped my grasp, selling for a little over $220; this was the first time I had seen this cachet listed. However, I was able to pick up a small dial (machine) CDS of the Pent Arts Marines' Hymn cachet to complete that set of postmarks. The cover has been stained by the gum on the seams but I don't often see this cachet listed so I thought I'd pick it up while I had the opportunity.

It has been almost 7 months since I was able to add another cover to my collection, although the 20 shown several posts above continue to elude me. My latest addition is this addressed cover with a colorful Fluegel cachet and a large CDS over a block of four Scott 929s -- the composite image in the initial post has been updated to include this cover.

On May 27, 2011 I acquired 3 first day covers of the Iwo Jima stamp (Scott 929) with different cachets and it was then that I began my quest to collect all of the cachets for the Scott 929 that were listed in Mellone's. It has been almost six years since I started my near-daily search of the online sales sites and I'm only two-thirds complete. Several months ago I decided to begin acquiring Iwo FDCs with cachets that were not listed in Mellone's (NIM), provided they didn't appear to have been add-ons. Here is one such cover:
It took a bit of searching but today I learned, by way of the Arago site, that the "America Needs Your Help" cachet on this cover was produced by Jacques Minkus. The Arago description follows:

This Iwo Jima cover collection is a great and worthy quest, Steve ( tomiseksj), and I wish you every success in completing it. Having served in the Marine Corps myself, I am finding this thread very interesting indeed. Thanks, Steve!

The only copy of the hand-painted Dorothy Knapp cachet listed as Mellone 929-28 that I have seen on ebay sold on January 3, 2017 for $899. This hand-painted Knapp cachet which is similar to 929-28 but not listed in Mellone was sold on ebay on November 4, 2015 for $749. Like the first item shown, it was the only cover with this cachet that I'd seen in over 3 years of near-daily searching until last week when this cover appeared for sale on ebay. This cachet is a printed add-on of the unlisted Knapp cachet but I bought it anyway, paying four figures (fortunately with a decimal point after the first two!). It is highly unlikely that I'll ever acquire a hand-painted Knapp for my Iwo collection.

Unfortunately, it has become much easier to find cachets that are not listed in Mellone's than ones on my want list. This most recent acquisition is an example. If anyone can shed some light on the cachetmaker I'd appreciate the information.

It has been slightly more than 6 months since I've been able to add anything to this collection. In the past week I've added two first day covers that were needed with the machine cancel (small CDS) and another that was not listed by Mellone. Pent Arts 929-44 and 929-46, respectively: Not Listed: Insofar as this wanted listing has borne no fruit since its inception in July 2013, I will be moving the entire thread to the Covers, Postmarks and Postal Stationery board in the U.S. category.

Steve, I want you to know that I thought that I would find something to help out your Iwo Jima FDC collection amongst my Dad’s stuff, as it was his era.
Unfortunately, now that I have been through all of the covers, there just isn’t anything. Sorry. If there had been, I would have sent it to you. I think that the problem is the timing. He was serving in the Navy from Dec-1944 until Jul-1946. As a result, there are no FDCs in his collection from that time period.
I will keep my eyes open moving forward, and if I ever come across any Iwo material, I promise to do something about it!
By the way, during my time on active duty, I was part of the first Marine unit to return to Iwo Jima after WWII. That was around 1982-1983.

Once I hit a dry spell on finding any more of the listed cachets I began to acquire some that weren't listed by Mellone. I avoid those that appear to be modern add-ons and will only go after a cover if it appears to have a period cachet. The Axis Rats cachet in my previous post is an example of one such cover, as are several of my more recent acquisitions.

Another recent addition, although not listed in Mellone under the Iwo Jima issue. This Art Craft cachet depicting the leaders of four of the Allied nations (U.S., Great Britain, China, Soviet Union) made its debut in January 1943 with the issuance of the United Nations stamp (Scott 907).

I am no friend of "patriotic" stamps or covers. But I think in times of wars it is understandable, that such products do appear. However this letter is the most pathetic and cynical one,I have ever seen.
Freedom of speach Freedom from want Freedom of religion Freedom from fear
Four noble phrases indeed ! But in connection with an image of Stalin the pure scorn. He was not a "red Hitler". But he was responsible for many millions of people murdered during his rule of terror.

It has been quite some time since I last saw a Mellone's-listed cover that I needed so I entertain myself with ones such as this. As best I've been able to determine, the Teaneck (New Jersey) Stamp Club was active from at least the mid-1940s through 1966. I find no online presence for either it or The Collectors' Club of Bergen County.

I am trying to complete my collection of first day covers for the 1945 U.S. Iwo Jima issue (Scott 929 - the stamp used on my avatar) that are listed in Mellone's Specialized Cachet Catalog of First Day Covers of the 1940s (Volume I). OK Steve, So I have been collecting the Iwo Jima Covers for years now, but only started to get large and small cancels after reading your post last year. I just figured out that there are two versions of this cover. Notice that the first cover has an Eagle, Globe, and Anchor on the left side and they have removed the words "Mt. Surabachi from the cover. I had never noticed this until this morning when I found a Large cancel, single stamp cover (second Picture) on Ebay, checked my collection, only to notice the one on Ebay, was different than mine. I own the first cover I have pictured here, but the second one was on Ebay and is different than my large cancel. Of course, I bought it (second picture), this morning. LOL.

I have 6 of this cache with different postmarks, singles, blocks or plate blocks. The one above, is the only one I have that is different. I guess I bought it and never noticed it was different until yesterday.

So, I found a rather interesting piece this week. It is the 7th War Loan, small size, poster, that has the Iwo Jima Stamp, and a First Day cancellation on it. Just thought I would buy it to add to my Iwo Jima Collection. I may even frame this one, and hang it on the wall in the Stamp Storage Room.

I finally got around to scanning my latest gap-filler that was acquired in late March -- the W.G. Crosby cachet is listed in Mellone's as 929-35. The cover was purchased as part of a two cover lot, the other being an Aristocrats-Lowry (929-1) with plate number block of 4. The latter cover included a Church Committee For China Relief pamphlet titled "Have a Heart for China."

This cover arrived in my mailbox this afternoon, providing an uplifting moment following some recent philatelic disappointment. The seller had listed it as a Pent Arts cachet; however, while the line drawing style is similar, it lacks the banner seen on all previous Pent Arts cachets. The cachet is signed by F. Miller -- he has a prior listing in Mellone's for the Philippines issue (Scott 924) but this didn't make the cut for the Scott 929 (perhaps because the cachet's subject matter is from the wrong theater). Regardless, I'm happy to add it to my collection, even if it doesn't get me any closer to completion of my primary pursuit.
