Oubangui-Chari, or Ubangi-Shari, was a French territory in central Africa which later became the independent Central African Republic (CAR). French activity in the area began in 1889 with the establishment of an outpost at Bangui, now the capital of CAR (map sourced from Wikipedia). Per the note in the 2009 Scott Catalog (Vol. 6), in 1910 French Congo was divided into the three colonies of Gabon, Middle Congo, and Ubangi-Shari and officially named "French Equatorial Africa." Under that name in 1934, with the territory of Chad included, the group became a single administrative unit. This 1 centime violet and green Ubangi-Shari stamp (Scott 41) was issued in 1924: it is a 1922 issue stamp (a type of Middle Congo (1907-22) overprinted "Oubangui-Chari") that has been overprinted "Afrique Equatoriale Francaise." The stamps of Ubangi-Shari were replaced in 1936 by those of French Equatorial Africa. (NOTE: In the interest of full disclosure, I had never heard of Ubangi-Shari prior to starting to catalog my French Equatorial Africa stamps earlier today.)

"Ubangi-Shari (French: Oubangui-Chari) was a French colony in central Africa, a part of French Equatorial Africa. It was named after the Ubangi and Chari rivers along which it was colonized. It was established on December 29, 1903, from the Upper Ubangi (Haut-Oubangui) and Upper Shari (Haut-Chari) territories of the French Congo; renamed the Central African Republic (CAR) on December 1, 1958; and received independence on August 13, 1960." (Wikipedia) Ubangi Shari 1915 - 1930, the Collection The following pages show the complete set of stamps issued while Ubangi Shari was a French Colony. Not included are any of the inverted or missing surcharge types. The stamps shown are either Mint Never Hinged or Mint Hinged. Finding examples with pristine gum wasn't always possible with these issues due to the harsh tropical conditions of temperature and moisture. All of these examples have intact gum but there is quite a range of discoloration in gum tones running from off-white to light brown. While collecting this set had its challenges, a much more difficult quest is my parallel used collection which is about 60% complete. I'm extremely picky about cancellations. I've also included some notes about the album pages at the end of the display. Rob

A few comments about the album pages.
I purchased a set of pages for all of the French African Colonies from STAMPEXTRAS07 (Portugal) on eBay. They come pre-printed and un-punched on heavy glossy stock. You have a choice of either color images of the stamps or a blank frame. Unfortunately, I chose the style with the images printed in color.
In retrospect, I would order blank frames in the future.
Reason: I've always used clear Showgard mounts in my other albums and have a lot on hand. I used clear Showgard mounts on the previous pages. I've ordered black mounts for the rest of the remaining colonies.
Unfortunately, the images show stamps with black background mounts and using my clear mounts, you can see the perforations of the printed stamp behind my actual stamp unless you line it up perfectly, and then it occasionally offends my sense of aesthetics because some of the images aren't straight.
Another drawback I find, of printed color images is the page looks complete even if there are missing stamps.

Great pages - as I am working on all French Colonies in Africa, I find it more difficult to find a good representation of these stamps though I do have some Thanks for showing !!!! REL1948René

Splendid! Funnily enough, was just filling in my Ubangi collection (mint only) earlier today, not nearly so nice and complete as yours, but getting there. Now just going through Togo.

Hello gmot, I'm working on Togo too (Mint). It's almost complete up to 1947. However; my Togo used collection is only about 60% complete, I'm really fussy about cancellations so it will take a long time to assemble. I'll be posting the various colonies as I continue to mount them. I have very little material after 1950 from any of my collecting areas. Thank you for the kind words. Rob PS Look at the exquisite engraving on the magnificent Tiger and foliage...

Yes, the designs of the French African colonies are very nice - and is what initially drew me to them (along with my grandfather also collecting them). I'm about 85% complete for them all up to independence, around 90% mint (don't collect used in general), some more than others, but many need quality upgrading... Not a very active poster, but look forward to seeing more of your collections!

Rob, I just wanted to add my thanks and congratulations on your beautiful pages posted here. I have recently been putting together a few of my own French African colonial issues, but I have few that compare to yours. These Ubangi-Shari are just great. I can tell just by your presentation how much time and effort you have put into them. Really well done! I quoted your comment about album pages, just to note that I totally agree with it. I had been thinking about buying pages with printed color images too, but luckily I hesitated (procrastinated is closer to the truth!) and never pulled the trigger. At some point afterward, like you, I came to the realization that a color image that looks just like the stamp that belongs in that space is more of a liability than an asset. In the end, I moved away from printed pages altogether and started using Hagner stock pages. I like the look of those, but they have their own disadvantages, too. Anyway, I really like your pages and the high-quality stamps that you have painstakingly collected!
