Been toying with this for awhile think I'm finally ready to jump in.Liberia is tuff to find so switching ships is easy.I know it's not truly Canada but lot closer than Africa.Would love to see what others think. Also if you got 'em show 'em.

I think it is a neat option. I don't concentrate on it in any remote sense of the word, but I pick up examples when I find them at very attractive discounts off of CV, and I look for any interesting lozenge cancels, including SPM.
The postage dues are nice (especially the Newfie, the fish); the 1938 pictorials are a sharp set; unfortunately, unless you start at the Navigation & Commerce stamps, 1892 and on, it seems tricky to find examples without spending a boatload of money.
Many of the overprints are very pricy, and (at least here in middle America) they don't show up very often. That leads me to believe they might garner a higher percentage of CV.
It would be interesting, though. Perhaps I'm mistaken in thinking that the first 60 stamps would set you back $10,000.

I am surprised you say that First Frog, Liberia is fairly common I would have thought, A few weeks ago, I saw a vast collection of Liberia on offer plate proofs, artists drawings the lot, for a reserve of $200 it went unsold IIRC.
SPM as CJD indicates is a very difficult area, and expensive

the stuff I'm missing from Liberia is just not seen or offered or if it is the price is usually full catalog.I will not give up on them but rather wait for market to open.I'm not crazy about getting all those proofs and imperfs that seem to duplicate every issue although I've amassed a lot of them.SPM while may be pricey will be a welcome little side line and I look forward to learning as I go.I'll start gathering them then when it looks like a bunch I'll work on getting some kind of pages.

The 2013 Scott Specialized Catalogue lists 206 pre 1941 SP&M regular stamps, plus eight semi-postals, 41 dues and four parcel posts; a total of 259, not including 22 variations on Nos. 110 thru 120. I have collected 171 of these, about two thirds. My collecting strategy has been entirely passive in that the stamps have all come from albums I’ve cherry picked for my classical world-wide collection; I have never bought SP&M singles or sets at auction or otherwise.
So based on that experience, I offer the following comments: 1) Most of my 171 are mint, suggesting that used examples may be more difficult to collect. 2) If you cherry pick albums and do nothing more, you’ll probably need to content yourself with partial sets and less cat. val. 3) This is not as serious a problem as it is with other countries, because SP&M sets have the same artwork for many denominations. 4) Occasionally I have been lucky enough to find complete runs, always of the post 1924 issues. 5) Artwork on the classical era stamps is suitably and satisfyingly austere, making for attractive pages in my album, although incomplete. 6) I've probably not added any SP&M stamps in the past two years. 7) If I complete my Scott Vol. 1 SP&M spaces, I will need to buy most of the high value stamps as singles or in sets that partially duplicate current holdings, which is frustrating. I haven’t decided yet what to do about that.

My plan is to start as I did Liberia purchase a mid size collection as a jump start, then add a few auction items til I have something that needs a good organize. At that point set up pages and establish a want list. And (as Jackie Gleason would say)Away We Go 11

O.K. first lot arrived and it contains numerous dups. When I get straightened out I'll offer these up.I'm sure they must be the most common so don't get excited.

If you want to add spice to your SP&M collection, you can add French Colonies general issues cancelled 'SPM': Similar to the German Colonies 'Vorläufers'. (edit: didn't notice this had already been mentioned previously)

The early issues are very expensive. Besides certificates, a good reference library of genuine specimens for comparison purposes are a must. Here are a few for your consideration: No. 1 expertized by G. Carion/Paris: No. 2: (additional black ink flaw)

Frog, I have been waiting for the market to "open up" on Liberia for a long time. Most of the stamps are cheap and pretty easily found. On the other hand there are a few hundred, including the ordinaries and other scarce overprints, which are simply not to be found but rarely. It is a very popular country and most people who collect it are probably in about the same shape we are. I am trying to get most countries in the 95% range of completion but Liberia is one that will probably not ever happen.

As far as St Pierre And Miquelon is concerned all I can say is that it is challenging! France might be a good choice for you.

Mitch, you hit the nail dead on the overprints are damn near impossible to either locate or afford and for some time it was unclear which of the newer issues were actual stamps. In looking for my Canada stuff SP&M keep coming up so I looked at the history and it makes sense to include it with my BNA while not true British it is north America.I'll start slow when there's nothing that sparks interest in my Canada and others from Newfoundland.Newfie like you is getting narrowed down to page one and those airs that for all that matters might as well not exist. If I live to two hundred maybe one day I'll have most of the world. My one wish would be to be able to share images of your collection with Mom she has no computer or internet access at her home.I have been promised her U.S. stuff and my older sister the w/w.A family of collectors is not a common thing.Sis does Scandinavia and it's pretty extensive in volume.

What I've learned thus far is most of these command at least half CV so yes it's going to be a work in progress for some time.As for France not sure I'm ready to start another major country but only time will tell.Mitch what happened to your link?? It was a great aid to me.

Frog, other than Liberia you seem to be staying close to Canada. Other than the provinces and SP&M, that doesn't leave much. The next two choices to me would be Great Britain and France. They are both fairly even as far as ease of completing goes. Other than the early issues I find Great Britain rather boring and find France far more diverse an compelling. For example GB has virtually no semi postal or air mail stamps. Both areas for France are extremely well represented with some of the most beautiful stamps ever made. There are also very many issues that make great specialty areas to pursue. Financially speaking, one can probably get France up to the 90% level of completion for a few hundred dollars. Anyways, that is why I suggested France I suppose one of the next closest countries would be Mexico . Mexico is perhaps the hardest country in the world to collect, so if you're looking for an insane challenge, that is your country. Of course there is always Greenland. Not a lot of stamps but a couple areas can be rather challenging to complete. I'm not sure what link you are asking about but here is one for Liberia. I rescanned the first pages yesterday showing more stamps at better detail. Here is the A-Z country index link

Zu I think it's chrome. You can try to make me literate but don't be disappointed if I fail.Since my baby graduated from college (2 yrs)ago I have to fly on my own.She even installed spotify for me but to this day I can't even get that to work.Great kid worked very hard to get her job in breast cancer research. It was one of the causes she championed even in high school. She did Komen run and I believe that's what led to her interest in marathons which she does now.I had a few scary times with the bombing in Boston as she was doing that.Boston is now her home.(sigh)

Oh, a runner... never really did understand those. My husband became one after our second kiddo was born. He swore he only took it up for the exercise. (He put on a few sympathy pounds with me.) Then he started setting the alarm to get up at 5am in the summer before it got hot... swore he only ran for the stress relief. Then he entered a local 10k... swore he only did it because it was for a good cause (a local cancer endowment). His brother lives in Boulder, CO, and had been bugging him to come out and run the Bolder Boulder, at which hubby laughed and thumbed his nose. Then he went out and ran the Bolder Boulder... swore he only did it because we could visit his brother and take in a couple of baseball games. Then he did a half marathon... then he did a full marathon... he swears he'll never go to Boston, but give him a few years. *sigh* Aaaanyway, let me see about putting some instructions together for you on that bookmarking thing.

Frog, I was wondering the same thing about you using bookmarks. I don't see how you have survived on the net without using them. You best figure it out soon, it's a simple thing and much easier than keeping track of URL's to type in. Thanks for the kudos, someday I might even consider myself a Philatelist. That is title I don't place on many people.
