What I collect: Worldwide Stamps 1840-1930

These arrived today after finding them listed by a US seller. It's a German set of Michelin (Man) Zodiac signs. Londonbus1 had posted an image of an incomplete set of these on another site, which set me off on the hunt for them. According to LB1, these are rather scarce. I hope to meet up with him tomorrow at Stampex in London, so he might be able to give me a little more information. Not in perfect condition, but at least all 12 are there. From what I have seen elsewhere, these were issued in a single pane, which I would imagine would be difficult to find. Wow, I am jealous.... wish I were going to STAMPEX, too! By the way, I really like these stamps--it is a very nice set, and I have never seen them before. Anyway, enjoy STAMPEX. If you think of it, take a few photos and post them on TSF. It would be fun for the rest of us to enjoy the experience vicariously. Have fun!

Fun fact, anping. The Michelin man's name is actually Bibendum, or Bib for short. Nice zodiac set!

Good Luck in the New Year 1914 Bern, SwitzerlandI wasn't able to track down the flag pictured here but because it has a bear on it, I am assuming this cinderella originated in Berlin Bern. Do correct me if I am wrong.

Or for the more urbane German, a glass of beer with his fraulein. From one James W. to another: Today's German is just as likely to drink a glass of wine. Especially in a typical wine glass as shown--it would be strictly verboten to serve beer in such a glass depicted! :-) The Cologne Cathedral, shown in the poster stamp, is just steps from the Rhine River. The Rhine River area, and the nearby Moselle River--which flows into the Rhine at Koblenz--is famous for producing some of Germany's most prized wines! ein Prosit!
zum Wohl!
à santé!
Skol!
cheers!--Jim W.

jimwentzell You are no doubt correct sir, that the gentleman on the poster stamp is drinking wine. Though for the life of me I'm sure I've seen images of beer consumed in similar glasses. Oh well, I have a glass of wine at my side now. I raise it to you! Back in '88 I did some backpacking in Europe and ended up at Koblenz. Did some river cruising on the Rhine AND Mosel, met lots of interesting folk (including a nice girl from Boston!) and enjoyed some of the delicious local wine. This poster stamp suddenly has new meaning. Cheers!

A nice addition to my budding Poster Stamp / Cinderella accumulation from Germany:
"Diplome (brand) placards for all Association- and Exhibition- purposes//Illustrated Catalogue free of charge//Royal University Press H. Sturtz Inc., Wuerzburg" I like the dog pictured!!!
It seems the few high-quality older poster-stamp type Cinderellas I've gotten recently are selling for at least $4 or more when buying them individually from dealers or online auctions. I wonder if I am overpaying?!?

Depicting three early Wuerttemberg stamps, this 100th Anniversary sheetlet was issued in 1951.... I forgot where I got this Cinderella sheetlet, but anytime a stamp is depicted on another stamp (or Cinderella, or philatelic label) I like it!

Philatelists Day was held in Nuremberg, July 22-25, 1921. This attractive set was issued to commemorate the occasion. I am missing the blue colour from the larger design (bottom). If anyone spots one, do let me know.

I ran across a scan of these Hamburg Charles Van Diemen Brief Paket ('letter package") labels and I'm fairly sure I still have them somewhere, unless they were traded them for something!

Plenty of 'Noris' but not too much Chocolate in my initial searches. Noris is an old (17th century?) nickname for the city of Nuremberg based on its Latin name. I had wondered about the source of the name " Norisring", a famous motorsport road course in the city, thinking maybe there was once a famous man named Noris or something like that, but it turns out it's named after the city. There's an entire metric boatload of advertising poster stamps available for the Noris Schokolade firm! I couldn't find much about the firm itself, though - a help wanted ad dating from 1866 (!) is the first mention of Carl Bierhals which I could find, and from what I could tell, his later registered chocolate factory ran until the early 1950s (much of the factory site was destroyed in World War 2, as was about 90% of the Nuremberg city center). An architectural firm gives details of their " Project Chocolate Castle", a new building built on the site of that factory. I also found the occasional advertising poster, like this one for sale on a site which deals with old tin advertising boards (€660). edit: A bit more searching has turned up a defunct website for the Project Chocolate Castle which is retrievable through the Wayback Machine - numerous old photos of the original factory and a related bakery are shown in a "history" section. Some absolutely stunning Cinderellas posted here...thank you, Londonbus, for sharing and inspiring! I got this 1938 Muenchner Fasching label recently online as I have many relatives there. I try to visit my aunts uncles cousins and their kids often in the Bavarian capital. Karneval season ( Fasching) culminates on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday (aka as Mardi Gras). It is overshadowed in Munich by the more popular--and populated-- Oktoberfest which actually begins every September. Nevertheless Fasching in Munich (and nearly all over Germany, especially the Rheinland) is an experience never to be forgotten!

I'm unable to load pictures as I did before, sorry!
I meant to post pictures of the twelve Zeppelin commemorative Cinderellas I "won" at auction but have been waiting on three months.

I came across these stamp-like labels honoring pilots of Germany, up for auction closing later this month. We'll see if my bid was successful.... The labels are made to look similar to Bavarian stamps from early last century, but obviously are not valid for postal duty. They sure would look nice on cover, along with the stamps they resemble! UPDATE: My bid was not sufficient; I hope the new owner enjoys them!!!!
