Here's a 1940 censored cover from Burma (today known as Myanmar) that I picked up for the price of a small cup of coffee. The fact I never drink coffee saves me money for stamps and covers! Myanmar/Burma, another formerly reclusive, xenophobic nation, has finally cast off most of the old guard military dictatorship and is now moving quickly into the 21st century. I had the privilege of knowing Khin Ma Gyi, a serene yet strong beacon of hope. She was also crowned Miss Burma in 1954, a true beauty, inside and out. Khin was a well-known author and photographer in her homeland who migrated to South Florida in the early 1970's. Khin worked with me for many years and we became close friends. Spiritually I owe a lot to Khin. We traveled through Europe together in the mid 1980's visiting and staying with my family in Germany. Khin liked to travel, she knew so many people at embassies abroad and the Burmese diaspora all over the world. I took her and some of her family members to Europe in 1984, we stayed with my extended family and had a lot of fond memories. Khin intended to reciprocate my touring services by taking me to Myanmar, Korea, Japan and China, where she had extensive family ties; she had twelve grown children! As luck would have it, I met someone else, fell in love, got married and took my new wife elsewhere instead. Khin always says she owes me a trip to the Orient! I still can pack a bag in less than ten minutes when it comes to traveling to new places! This posting is dedicated to Khin Ma Gyi, my friend forever.

I am sorry to say, that I do not share jimwentzell´s view of the current situation in Burma (Myanmar). I think the democratic elected government is not much more than a fig-leave veiling an ongoing rule by the
military forces.Greater freedoms and the economical opening are wanted by the generals. If something goes wrong, they now have a scapegoat to blame: the elected goverment. Having no complete Burma collection,I will show, what I can:
Issued April 1st,1937,when Burma became a seperate british colonie. Till then it was a part of British India. (part I of 3)

Although nl1947 has anticipated the following two posts,I never the less, will show mine. I think they are a good demonstration, how scans with a different colour-saturation can give a quite different impression how stamps look like.

In 1942 the Imperial Japanese Army invaded Burma and drove the British colonial masters out. Welcomed by nationalist burmese forces,Japan granted "independence" to Burma in 1943. However the independence never materialized: the Burmese Government was just a puppet of the Japanese. Shortly before the end of the war,the Burmese Government changed sides and declared war on Japan. The first stamp issues under japanese occupation, were overprinted colonial stamps, issued by the Burmese Indepence Army. The different overprints are not easy to distinguish.Furthermore there seem to be many forgeries. Not knowing any useful guide about the forgeries of Japanese Occupation Stamps,I have only few of them, what I can show.

stamp overprinted with peacock Henzada Type II; it is believed, that stamps overprinted with Henzada type II,were produced after the war by unauthorized persons. So they are not (no longer) catalogued by the major catalogues. However this overprint was applied regularly to postcards and envelopes.

Envelope overprinted with the Henzada type II peacock, issued in May 1942. The different types of overprints on envelopes are not easy to recognize, because the king´s image is embossed, what makes the paper uneven and the overprints sometimes unsharp.

Also on June 1st,1942 the above envelope was issued. The imprinted cancel reads: "JAPANESE POSTS & TELES DEPT *MOULMEIN* The centre: POSTAGE PAID The "R" in the triangle was added handstamped, likely as a control-measure.

Again on June 1st,1942 this envelope with kings portrait crossed out and an added seal was issued. There are three different types of the cross.Another three envelopes exist with an additional 5 C. 2 C. overprint. Also the envelope of the previous post was overprinted like the latter three.

On Sept.22nd japanese stamps overprinted (handstamped) in burmese currency were issued. Ten definitives and one commemorative semi-postal (4+2 Sen fall of Singapore) were overprinted that way.I have a few of them only. The inverted overprints are not scarce and are valued about three times normal ones.
