Etiquettes. On proving cover (Large) Emirates Post Cover, posted 7th October 2010 from Abu Dhabi to Canada. (Seems cheap. 1 AED 450 fils (AED =Arab Emirates Dirham) 1.450 = 60c Aust.)

Almost four years later, but in case anyone else is looking, there are 100 fils to the dirham (AED) in the UAE.
In addition amounts over 1 dirham but not whole dirhams are usually expressed in fils, not fractions of dirhams or dirhams and fils.
Hence 1 dirham and 25 fils is usually expressed as 125 fils.
It is therefore likely that the postage was not 1.450.AED, but 550 fils or 5.50 AED.
The face values of a series stamps is often made up of whole dirham values - “1AED” or “5 AED” - and fils e.g. “125 fils” meaning 1.25 AED.
I will upload some examples of the definitive sets in a later post.

The falcon, being a key element of the emblem of the United Arab Emirates, has featured on many of its stamps, including most of the definitives. The first "falcon" definitives, issued 15th August 1976: This shows the face value format I described above - 90 fils, then 1 dirham (Dh), then 140 fils (i.e. 1 Dh 40 fils). The second "falcon" defs were very similar to the first, issued on 25th July 1977: The theme continued in the third series of defs, these being issued from 1982 (7th March), further values added in 1984 (35, 175, 250 fils) and 1986 (50 Dh): The next definitive issue only comprised 3 values and was issued as a booklet: 1990 saw another series of falcon-themed defs, additional values appeared in 2003 and 2004: A new design was launched in 2007, using calligraphy to form a falcon from the word "Emirates" in Arabic: (This set was available in a self-adhesive format booklet). A new set was issued in 2009, this time with the new symbol AED instead of Dh: (Shown above is the 2 Dhs "Priority" version, issued in 2008, prior to the change from Dh to AED). 2011 series: 2013 series (still has one "fils" value):

Thanks for showing the Arab Postal Union issues (here and the Omani ones). The wreath of flags design is one of my all-time favourites and it is the Mauritania issue from that set which started me on the way to stamp collecting.
