One of the benefits of APS Chapter membership is monthly receipt of The American Philatelist.
My initial intent was to offer the Forum's copy of AP as a monthly giveaway but after a few offerings it became apparent that the postage costs associated with my sending the journal to members outside of the United States could easily approach $100 per year.
I already am receiving the AP as a benefit of my individual membership so I have no need for a second copy; however, I'm not inclined to add this informative publication to my recycle bin.
I see three options for disposition of the Forum's AP and would like your input.
1. Continue to offer the magazine as a monthly giveaway to our members.
2. Ask APS to redirect the Forum's AP to a permanent library in the U.S. for deposit.
3. Ask APS to withhold delivery of the AP.
Your input is appreciated! The poll will remain open until July 27th 4th (I have to submit the annual report by July 31st).

Does the option to withhold delivery afford us any discount?

Is it possible to redirect the subscription to one of the members here who isn't an individual APS member? If so, maybe you could have a giveaway for getting the subscription until it is up for renewal again.

Is it possible to redirect the subscription to one of the members here who isn't an individual APS member? It is my understanding that all official mailings, to include the AP, are mailed to either the Chapter President or to the APS representative, if one has been appointed.

I get a lot of stuff from my local library and hence I voted for the library option, even though I will never benefit from it directly...but what goes around comes around

This issue may at some point become moot -- the following was included in the draft minutes from the February 13, 2014 APS Board meeting:
I do not know how or when this change is to be implemented, nor do I know if current online Chapters will be grandfathered.
As recently as April 21st, documentation I received from APS gave no indication as to a forthcoming change to our status and it offered the option of redirecting the Chapter's copy of the AP to a permanent library.

But I assume the dues will remain the same? (How much are they now?)

But I assume the dues will remain the same? (How much are they now?) We paid $48 ($45 for annual membership and $3 for a one-time admission fee). The membership application stated that one half the amount of the membership fee was allocated for the monthly journal so it is reasonable to assume that, absent the AP, the membership fee would be reduced. However, I can't validate that that will be the case, if/when the change is implemented.

Thanks, Steve, for letting us know about all of this. I guess time will tell what may happen with our particular status.

I vote for Library not sure how to pick one though. I think the best way to do so would be to have members nominate a U.S. library (ideally one that doesn't already have the AP in its holdings) and then I would use random.org to make the selection.

Insofar as this subject hasn't garnered much interest from our membership, and because it appears that we will be needing to identify a permanent library in the U.S. for deposit, I am going to close the survey at midnight, NY time on July 4.
I'd like to thank those who have participated and encourage you to consider a library that you'd like to nominate for receipt of the Forum's AP (remember that it must be a U.S.-based library and should not already be receiving the AP).
Absent an upswell of participation that leans the majority toward one of the other options, I'll solicit library nominations on July 5th and will conduct a random draw to select one on July 15th.
For those who have yet to participate in the poll, I encourage you to take part.
Thanks,

The poll has been locked and we're now in the process of selecting a permanent library in the U.S. to have APS redirect the forum's copy of AP.
Please post your nominations in this thread by not later than Monday, July 14th at midnight New York time.
I will conduct a random draw to select the winning library on July 15th and post the result here.
Any member may submit a nomination, regardless of whether or not he or she had participated in the poll.
Nominations must include the library name and complete mailing address.

Will we still have access to the online version every month? I'd really miss that if it went away.

We will not lose any of the chapter benefits that we currently enjoy -- the copy of the Journal that I currently receive in the mail each month will be redirected to a library of our choosing.

I don't usually argue for this, but I think the best thing to do is the one that is easiest and cheapest, Steve.
Since this copy is mailed to you, I would vote to empower you to find a location (library, senior center, some other non-profit) that is on the path of your normal errands, where you could just drop it off as the issues come in monthly. To mail it to some other destination is costly.
Taking it a little further, I would say to feel free to try several different locations over the months, perhaps, if feasible, follow up to find out where it seems to be most appreciated, and then make that the permanent location (until we stop receiving it from the APS). Or please just use your best judgment.
Thank you for being as conscientious and scrupulous about this and the APS as you are.

...To mail it to some other destination is costly... Dave, Neither I nor TSF would incur any cost as the AP would be mailed directly to the institution by APS. I've contacted the library at the Washington, DC Veteran's Administration Medical Center to see if they would like to add the AP to their holdings -- if so, I will be nominating them. However, this is TSF's copy of the AP so I'd like to give our membership the opportunity to nominate recipient libraries as well.

Steve --
Thanks for clearing up my misunderstanding. I thought it would have to come to you first.
Your selection of the VA Medical Center library in DC sounds like an excellent choice, and I hope the library will be interested!
Thanks again for your work on this.

The DC VA Medical Center library hasn't replied to my inquiry so I am instead going to submit the Van Noy Library at Fort Belvoir as my nomination to receive the forum's copy of the AP. The library services Fort Belvoir's population of well-over 40,000 residents and workers.

Absent any other nominations, I'll be asking APS to redirect the forum's American Philatelist to the Van Noy Libary at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
