Salesian Society Poster Charity Stamps B J Bosco Don Bosco Date of printing unknown. wiki The Salesians of Don Bosco (or the Salesian Society, officially recognized as the Society of St. Francis de Sales) is a Roman Catholic religious institute founded in the late nineteenth century by Saint John Bosco in order, through works of charity, to help the young and poor children of the industrial revolution. The Salesians' charter describes the society's mission as "the Christian perfection of its associates obtained by the exercise of spiritual and corporal works of charity towards the young, especially the poor, and the education of boys to the priesthood". The institute is named for St. Francis de Sales, an early-modern bishop of Geneva. St. John Bosco died on the 31st of January 1888.

My page on France Tuberculosis Seals, is now in error. The common consent was that TB seals appeared in 1927, this now can be revised (A first for "The Stamp Forum") The First French TB seal was issued in 1926 The vignette was an image of Laennec , oval surrounded by an oval border of Olive leaves. Laennec was the inventor of the Stethoscope. Sighted : On cover, mutilated stationery piece, tied to cover dated 30th December 1926

“La Belle France” Vignettes. Possibly produced by The Touring Club of France... ...Curiosity : Why have an advert for a Belgian Chocolate produced by Heinz (Chocolat Kwatta) on a Poster Stamp? Three different formats (overprinted, absent imprint, and imprinted "Kwatta") suggest that these might have been made available for use by a variety of sources. Perhaps, as with the Eaton's Fine Letter Papers poster stamps commemorating New York City scenes from 1939, Kwatta commissioned a set in an effort to bolster its brand.

Hi James, Hehehehehe that's the gentleman, inventor of the Stethoscope. Your stamp is a nice "prover" the labels came in booklet form. I shall indeed look but confess, I have 4 of them. Here is my "used on piece" from LaFayette / Lafavette ? Street. (I am still making my new album pages)

Here is the Old checklist for France TB, with the 1926 issue missing. Note : No French TB labels issued 1940 through 1944 for obvious reasons.

Ha! and here I thought you were pining for the man. Actually the young lass in the window (VIVRE) is the only one I'm missing. So if you want to put one aside for me, that would be great. No hurry, she's been around a while.

France Updated TB (Tuberculosis) Seals A small tribute to Mr. Albert Calmette In 1904, Dr. Albert Calmette founded the "Ligue du Nord contre la Tuberculose" (Northern Antituberculosis League), which exists until today. Originally they were only concerned with soldiers with TB, but in 1920, they expanded to handle all TB sufferers Dr. Albert Calmette who discovered the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin, used in the BCG vaccine against tuberculosis. He also developed the first antivenin for snake venom, the Calmette's serum. Calmette appeared on stamps from Russia, France and Belgium. 1- Russia: 1963; Scott #2805. 2- Belgium: 1953; 4 francs + 2 francs. Scott # B553 3- France: 1948; 6 francs + 4 francs Scott #B232 Seals : Page 1

I blew this up and was able to see that this is from France, but can't see what it says on the bottom line because of the cancel. Is it a revenue perhaps?

Definitely a French revenue. The 5c and the boxed "100F..." are printed on the stamp to show the tax rate paid by this stamp (5c up to 100F) and the rest of the black printing is the cancel.

The wording in the box reads "100 F et au dessous", which means, I believe, that it was for transactions 100 francs & below. By the way, that cancel is for Théodore Champion, which was/is a large stamp dealer (perhaps the largest in France? I'm not sure). They're still around, and still at that address, if I'm reading it correctly, 13, Rue Drouot in Paris.

The Rue Drouot and the little 'passage' off it are great for philatelists. I spent a whole day there a few years ago, great atmosphere. Paris is just a heaven for Stamp Collectors with a great market twice a week too. Worth a trip....but beware of pickpockets !!

zipper, you'll see from the information in Forbin that yours would fall in column B. Notice that on the left side of your stamp, there are preprinted places to be completed when used. In this case, the cancel itself fills in the details; otherwise, the date would be completed by hand. When issued, the stamps had "18" for the year, with the clerk filling in the last two digits. At 1900, they dropped the 8 and thereafter the clerk would have to fill in the last three numbers of the year.
We had a discussion on another forum years ago, questioning why they wouldn't have just changed the 8 to a 9, since the 1 and a 19 would only be good for exactly the same period of time, and I don't think anyone had a satisfactory answer, other than perhaps it was easier to delete than to replace.
More than you wanted to know.
P.S. The Forbin values are 100 years old now, but they can be a bit useful for seeing relative values, at least back then.

Theodore Champion Catalogue from 1939 and his shop then. Rodney: So impressive! My original intent in this post was to ask whether this catalog came from the Rodney archives or if you knew of a source on the web, because I'd love to figuratively thumb through some of these. However, in quoting your post, I saw that you hosted these images yourself, so this must have come from your personal vault. "Formidable!" (That was French, btw.)

If there is a particular country you want, just holler Dave. A lot of this type of stuff, is in the unwanted basket at stamp club sales We have come a long way to arrive at the Scott catalogue. Argentine Ministerial example.

Rod, I was mostly interested in any advertising. Let me clarify that. Please don't go to the trouble to scan anything in. I should just take a few minutes and Google for old philatelic journal in French that have been scanned in. But your club sales ^are^ far more interesting than mine ...
