So, this is kind of a melancholy weekend for me. On Monday morning my church closes it's doors, and our priest is retiring. I can't say I am a deeply religious man, but I am Catholic and due attempt to attend church on Sundays with my family. This weelend is sad for me, because, not only does the building I used to worship in close, but the man who gave my kids their sacraments is also retiring. But anyway, back to the philatelic exhibit. I decided to make a mini album of the postage stamps from 1993 in Vatican City, since that is the year our priest was ordained. I am giving it to him as a gift tomorrow, after his last mass. To anyone questioning the numbers, our priest was a lawyer. He was married with 8 kids, and entered the seminary after his wife died of cancer. The man is in his 80s and long past his retirement age. In my opinion, he makes a wonderful man to counsel people, because he has a family and he has faced a great personal tragedy. But back to the philatelic exhibit portion of this post.... I went and bought the White Ace Vatican City 1993 Supplemement, a complete set of 1993 stamps for Vatican City, an Itoya Art Portfolio with clear cover and a magnifying glass. Here is the completed project: 1. Page 1 is a page simply listing his clerical postions, including date of ordination and retirement. The left side is the cover, with the magnifying glass taped to the outside. 2. Page 2 just shows date or ordination and tells what's coming next 3. First page of the Vatican City stamps 4. Second page of Vatican City stamps 5. Third page of Vatican City stamps 6. Last page of Vatican City stamps There are enough blank pages for me to add pages for 2014 when they get released, so I can give him ordination stamps now, and retirement stamps sometime early next year when White Ace releases it's 2014 supplement. I picked the White Ace pages because they're gorgeous and contain stamp descriptions already. I didn't have time to make my own pages.

Lovely work indeed. I am sure Father Lonergan will treasure that. Just a gentle nudge in proofreading, you may have made a typo with "parochial"

What a unique idea for a retirement gift! It is lovely and nicely thought out to match Father Lonergan.

I have this urge to suddenly collect Vatican City stamps, and I haven't even started my Ireland collection....

Welcome to the "Worldwide collectors club" hehehehehe The Worldwide Collectors Club in my head is getting very expensive. I think it's time to STOP collecting USA. I feel like I am collecting the US more because I live here, than out of any enjoyment I get out of collecting.

Absolutely pertinent Andy, on both accounts, may be why I don't collect Australia strongly, because I live here. Worldwide need not be expensive, depends on your ability to adapt against convention. You appear to me, to have a high personal quality about your collections/ page designs etc. I have used Hungary, with Steiner pages, with stamps that have basically come free with bulk stamp lots as buffers, they are CTO and come nice to grungy, but I have now, 3 albums , nearly 6 Kgs of stamps that give lots of pleasure to look through and handle. I took the lead from a lass on another forum, who's criteria, at one time was collecting stamps with a purchase price of anything below 10c each. Philately caters for all, but for the Mint well centred collector, CTO collecting is a tough ask

:-)
I think my collecting needs would be limited to Ukraine, Ireland and maybe Germany. I'm Ukrainian. My wife is Irish. My father grew up in Germany, and I still have 2 cousins there. Vatican City holds an appeal as a Catholic.

But the US has gone crazy with tons of different stamp issues. And there has been nothing really in the 2013 or 2014 stamp program that has screamed at me to run out and buy them.
