Inspired by the discussion on excellent Filling Spaces blog, I'm doing a poll with very simple question: stamp album or stock book - which do you prefer. Vote for stamp album if you use either commercial pages (by Scott, Davo, Schaubek etc), or printed set of Steiner pages, or 100% DIY pages. Vote for stock book if you use stock books or stock pages. The remaining options, both or neither should be pretty obvious A similar topic/ poll was run at the Stampboards early 2012, and back then stock book won by 40% share, the hybrid solution (both) came close second with 33% share, and the rest of options got just the scrapes. But I'm very interested what the results look like when most of voters are from the North American area (as it seems to be with this board). I have a hunch that a far larger percentage will vote for stamp album. But that's just my speculation. Anyway, let the voting begin

It looks like you are including Vario pages in the stockbook category, so that's my choice.
I have too many oddballs, pairs/blocks, margins and cancels to be able to go with a preprinted album.

I'm going with "Both" although I do not actually have an album yet. At the moment, I'm placing my relatively small number of WW stamps in Vario pages, and I plan on purchasing the Mystic American Heirloom for my U.S. Down the road when/if I've built up some topical collections, I'll likely print custom pages.

I use Lighthouse Vario pages in binders. My main Canada collection is in the Lighthouse Vario-F size binders that come with a slipcase. Currently I have 4 binders of different colours that make up my main Canada and Provinces collection.
My topical collections are also stored in vario pages, but I just have a few ordinary but high quality binders for this. I usually try to find binders that are decorated to fit the theme.

I use albums. I like them better. For the most part, I am cranking out my own pages, because I want descriptions.

I would like to keep all my stamps in albums. However both printing and/or purchasing album pages is cost prohibitive for me at the moment, so most of my stamps end on Hagner or Kanga (Vario-like)pages. Also putting stamps in an album once printed is pretty time consuming.

I'd LOVE to get the Mystic American Heirloom hingeless, mostly because I'm lazy very busy, but I just can't bring myself to spend 10x as much for hingeless. Not right now and not for my used, anyway. Ah well, maybe I'll win the lottery someday.

For WW collecting I prefer albums. For topical collecting, I use Vario pages.

Thanks for the votes. Keep 'em coming... I just realized that I didn't describe my preferences in any way (though some may know of them already, LOL). These days I'm committed to using stock books with occasional odds & ends (for swap/exchange) on stock pages. So far I've got 160+ stock books of varying sizes (most being 32 pagers) housing my worldwide collection. Before becoming a worldwide collector and a 'stock books guy', I focused on Finnish stamps, and I had my Finnish collection on set of album pages. Few years back I (finally) moved the non-specialized parts of it to stock books (though I must admit I created a set of digitally mounted album pages in the process). Only the specialized pages (for definitives series of 1885, 1889, 1917 and 1930) remain on DIY album pages as transferring them would be too much work...Additionally, I did have few side collections (classic Hungary, Russian Art, and First Flight covers) on album pages; these are now merged into stock books as well.

I've been putting my WW classical era 1840-1940 collection into Steiner pages. For me, it makes sense for several reasons... • For a WW collector, all the classical countries- alive and dead- are available for Steiner pages • The Steiner pages follow quite closely the Scott Classic Specialized catalogue. As A U.S. based collector, using Scott and this catalogue makes sense. • I can print out the PDF files when I am ready to mount the collection for a specific country • Since I am a generalist, I am usually only interested in one stamp/one major number anyway • I use mounts,so I can exchange/improve the stamp quickly if a better example is available • Once a country is in the album, say with 40% spaces filled, the remaining 60% spaces are there for future acquisitions. Not necessary to move the existing stamps... • A glance at pages tells me objectively how complete I am for that country • Although 80,000+ spaces for the classical era is a LOT, it still is finite, and can be accomplished using album pages. If I was collecting all world all periods, I would give up and use stockbooks. • Aesthetically, it is hard to beat a well designed full album page of stamps ( Note: Sorry I haven't left a note in the Introduction thread yet, but I will do that soon. )

If I was collecting all world all periods, I would give up and use stockbooks. I'm like Keijo - I am collecting all world, all periods! Therefore, stockbooks for me as well. But maybe I voted incorrectly - I do keep my mint Canada collection in Lindner hingeless albums. Everything else, though, goes in stockbooks. Ryan

scb--thanks for creating this poll. Although I keep a couple of hundred stamps on stockpages while I'm deciding what to do with them, I'm a sucker for the printed album. Even after you've narrowed it down to album or stockbook, there are still a lot of personal preferences involved. I'm pretty certain my preference for the Scott International is based on my early stamp albums as a child. Certainly, not defensible logically. I just like the look of the completed pages.

Both. Albums, then stockbooks for extras.

Both for me, too. I'll keep my Big Blues going, but for stamps not therein represented, it will be white stock sheets with clear pockets which I keep in boxes rather than books.

Hi
I voted neither.
I use only blank quadrille pages. That way I can mount variations, applicable covers, blocks, etc. on a single page as I see fit. My duplicates, or items waiting mounting, are on a HAWID 3 row approval cards or if used in #2 glassine envelopes. Larger items are in glassine bags in an 8-1/2 by 11 set of stackable drawers.

Both. In my opinion with a nice album you can keep great track of what you have and, of course what you still need plus they look great! A stock book is also a must to keep duplicates, covers and odd-bals that don't fit well in an album.

Both, my older issues as you see from my posts end up expanded beyond what is offer by publishers.I buy new supplements fill them then work on getting my used singles and used blocks. As these come in I expand into quadrille pages printed on cardstock.Thinking seriously bout skipping middle step and just starting with quadrilles.

Well, I would prefer albums but the nature of my collection won't allow it. So stockbooks/pages is what I use for my main collecting interest.

Jerry B I would love to see what your quadrille pages look like. I have often wanted to make up at least one album in that fashion, but every time I start and do one page I end up scrapping it as unattractive...finally I gave all my quadrilles away...but I can always try again...

Both.. my main country collections in albums with self printed Steiner pages and extras and fledgling country collections in stockbooks.

I just voted stockbooks - Vario pages actually, housed in simple 3-ring binders. It's the flexibility I currently like, just slip in a new sheet as required with acceptable level of rearranging. The problem I have with albums is the lack of flexibility. You have just created a beautiful page and discover that you want to add another item; what to do? Actually my collection is more and more in the digital world. I scan every item and can study them much better that way with my aging eyes.

I am digital as well Conker, up to a point. I scan everything that comes across my desk, then arrange via cat #, when I have a full set of anything then on she goes to the album page.
I dislike stockbooks, not sure why, things get messy in there too, I like the UA#102 cards and the newly discovered G&K #6 cards for minisheets, you guys/gals in Nth America have great accessories at hand.
