Here are the other stamps I received from the Donation auction from this period of USA Stamps. It is the first time in all my years of collecting that I have looked closely at the Stamps from the United States. Quite an eye-opener !! Sc#294-299 Sc#300-305, 307-309 Sc#323-327 Sc#328-330 Sc#614-616 Sc#617-619 Sc#847 Thanks again bobby1948 ! Londonbus1

@ Steve T - my first comment, so please be patient with me. From the auctions I've followed the last few years, a single straight edge, repair of any kind, missing or partial gum (versus full OG) will all materially affect the price of a stamp - even for relative US rarities. What's amazed me is the order of magnitude price rise over scott standard catalog for the 98+ graded mint stamps. A US $4.50 catalog value stamp can easily go for $45 or even $450 if graded at the high end of the scale - meaning perfect centering, no perf issues, and certainly no straight edges repairs.

Perfect for the collector with:

An astute comment from a collector who believes that Graded & Encapsulated stamps (from the company that started this trend) is the only way the hobby will survive. Collecting for purely investment purposes would benefit that collector. But collecting for the heckuvit, not! Albums FTW!

Just workin' away here trying to update images, when I came upon this thread. While I'm here, I might as well add some of my favourite classics. #26, #10a, #71, #75, #77 James, workin' away, no kidding! Thanks for a great post.... the #71 and #77 are especially impressive, because those are both well-centered enough to be called "four-margin copies", in my opinion. I realize that the term "four-margin copy" is normally reserved for imperforate stamps, but in the case of 19th Century issues which are incredibly difficult to find with decent centering, I personally use the term to describe stamps which at least have the design clear of the perfs on all sides, and yours do that very well, indeed! Nice stuff!

The adventure begins: U.S. 1a and courtesy of Uncle Bill (thanks BG) 261a Fabulous-looking #1a, Frog. Wow! As for the other, consider it as coming from my Dad to your Mom. I think that they would both be pleased with us on this one. By the way, I am also glad if you were able to determine that there was no watermark on that stamp. That was my opinion, but I wasn't 100% sure, and I was in a bit of a hurry to get it in the mail, so I didn't take the time to do the whole watermark fluid routine to confirm.

Am bumping (if this the appropriate term) this thread and am surprised not much activity and a lot of missing scans due to departures. Presently transferring my US classics to Steiner pages simply to free the Scott International Vol 1 which is not the ideal album for these stamps. Printing pages made me realize how "poor" I was in the pre-1900 (no grills) and no Watermarked. I guess that is normal since I have not touched the US since I was a teenager except when I received the Mystery Box, full of US blocks etc. I managed to have enough "dups" to send to a friend in Ontario and one in India (Stock Books) and enough to make a give away next Canada Thanksgiving. So the transfer shows me more and more post 1900 stamps but the big decision will be....complete as much as possible Canada before the US....complete does not mean to have 100% of the stamps unless a big lotto is won and then, I do not know if I would venture my $ in such a sport. This was added to my giveaway in its thread a while ago - René

That stamp was only made with a G grill. A 'G' grill has a distinctive size/shape compared to other grills; it is small & square.

So the reason I haven’t posted a photo is I just dident know what I would be happy with remembering that it will be my memory of my first posted photo when I look back on it. So a came to the conclusion that I don’t know all much of this hobby to educate anyone here lol so I just think my post is going to be of: The first stamps I ever saw that began my interest in philatelic study and collecting so I’ll commemorate it by 3 photos of my first glimpse of the first album I opened, inherited but not interested until I looked at these. Enjoy and that’s about all the education I can apply at this point. Enjoy

you did just fine! Your pages look fairly typical of an early/starting collection and i'm guessing maybe from a WW album?

The pictures above are all US stamps of the 1930s period and as such they properly belong in a US thread rather than here. while many of these are older than most of us on the Forum they were used for many years and are fairly common, however the $2 and$5 from the presidents series “ Prexies” on page 1 are scarcer and better stamps .

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Tonight I was going through a small stock book of better duplicates and came across this pair of the 1901 Pan-American Sc 299 Steamship St. Paul. I have never liked the cancel/obliteration on them but I know some people like ugly. I am assuming the smooth top edge is normal on a sheet of these.

OK, René ( renden ), here is your first one: As the varieties of US, Sc114 without grill have very high CV, I would guess that there is a reasonable chance that a grill is there, but it is either flattened out or not easily visible. If it really is without grill, then it's big money!

The grill is apparent in the 3 cent, making it Scott 114. The image quality of the 1 cent is insufficient to make a determination; however, that design wasn't issued imperf so you're likely looking at a stamp with trimmed perfs.

Good one, Steve ( tomiseksj )! I could not really discern the grill, but looking at your marked-up image, it does seem to be there. I should have looked more closely.... I also agree with your comment about the 1-cent gray blue Franklin. I also imagine that it is just trimmed off perfs.
