frog, the terminology I've heard used for this is Dry Print . Follow the link for a full description. Here is a quick description: What we have here is yet another type of inking variety that is very often mistaken for a re-entry. This is the dry print, wherein some of the ink remained stuck in the recesses of the engraved plate, instead of being transferred to the paper, leaving unprinted, or white areas, around portions of the design.

Thanks for the correction jimjung.A very good reason to post examples of this simple print variety, even I took it as a re-entry til last year. Most collectors having never encountered this would think the same, and obviously even a dealer or two.Information makes us wiser every day.

Couple of examples from my 3c SQ Collection. This one is a dry print sample. Notice the white spots around the letters of CANADA POSTAGE and a bit around CENTS. This 2nd one is a Worn Plate printing. The details at the sides of the design are almost missing and you can see the dots on the Queen's face are missing, too.

It's true what they say about pictures being worth a thousand words. Great examples. Thanks for posting them.

I found this as part of my "playing" with the new USB microscope; a Small Queen (Scott No. 37b? Perforations - 12 x 12) with not one, but two position dots which I thought was reserved for the six cents of the Ottawa printings as noted in John Hillson's posting " Small Queens Issue - A Guide to Identification of Printings".
Is it really two position dots like the six cents or one position dot and a blob of ink? In either case, does this help in identifying this stamp as either coming from the 1st Ottawa or Montreal printings?

This fell out onto the floor (I do have some loose Canada pages, but they are hingeless) today as i was re-organizing... (not quite done, but a good start) I figured this was a good place to post. i don't actually collect Canada so more caught by the 97 postmark date (is that January 18?) doesn't look as red as other examples- a color variety or just faded Or a forgery?)

@stainlesb color variety the range of colors is astronomical.Printed for many many years in bunches of batches.Of course age plays into it with color fade at different rates depending on the ink used at the time.I have this stamp from almost true brown to beyond apple red

I had intended to spend some time identifying fancy cancels on my Small Queens, but instead got distracted with the microscope and spent some time with the 5¢ issue; as a result, came across this anomaly,
I went through the different definitions of a re-entry as described on the website here, but could not find anything that matched e.g. dry print, foreign entry, etc. given the descriptions and examples depicted. What would you call it? Any insights, thoughts or opinions are appreciate...

stanley64 I would think plate scratch. The other possible is foreign object on plate. If it is the first others should exsist.

After a cursory look for the same issue that is currently available in the on-line markets, I did find what could be a potential candidate of another example of this being a plate scratch,
Until I can compare two stamps side-by-side though, the jury is still out and I will continue to keep my eyes open...

From my own collection of Canada's 10¢ Small Queens,
From left to right:
stamp 1. Montreal Printing (purple) - target cancel
stamp 2. Ottawa Printing (dull rose) - Quebec, Canada circle-dated stamp (CDS) "Pitted 0" Variety Plate Position : 21
stamp 3. Ottawa Printing (rose-carmine) - Hamilton Cork Cancel
stamp 4. Ottawa Printing (salmon pink) - Montreal, Canada circle-dated stamp (CDS)
stamp 5. Ottawa Printing (rose pink) - Parcel Post Cancel – Montreal
Have fun and happy collecting!
P.S. The discovery of the "pitted O" variety was quite the surprise :-)
