Long time ago I used to be able to scan a page of stamps and then save the stamp images individually by selecting them individually. I used to have an option "save selection as". I can't remember what software I used to use - I still have all the same software graphics programs except now I have newer versions but I just can't find that option. I have CorelDraw, Corel PhotoPaint, Paint Shop Pro, Canon Scan, Epson Scan and none of them offers me the "save selection as" option. Thanks in advance.

Tony, I have on my windows 7 machine, the snipping tool that lets me select any part of a screen image and then save as whatever. Could that be it? I find it under all programs/accessories.
regards, Theron

All graphic programs can do what you need.
Myself, I use Photoshop.

Since you seem familiar with all graphics programs I wonder if you would please tell me where the "save selection as" option is in Corel Photo Paint X2 or in Paint Shop Pro X6 because to save my life I just can't find it. Thanks in advance.

In the old days when we belonged to what we used to call a newsgroup we had to upload an image to a place called cjointe.com and then indicate a link to it. In those days I would scan a page of stamps (say Ceres - all same size), I would then marque the first stamp, click 'save selection as' and give it a name. Then I would move the marque onto the second stamp, click 'save selection as' and give it a name. Then I would move the marque to the third stamp, select 'save selection as', etc., etc., ad infinitum, ad nauseum.
As I mentioned, I still have all the graphics programs I had then but for some reason this option does not appear in any of them; I just get the usual suspects: save, save as, export, export to office, export to web, etc. It was a very useful tool and I can't imagine all five of my graphics programs dropping it all at the same time. I know it's there, I just can't find it.
In those days I had Photoshop too but for some reason that escapes me it got on my nerves and I gave it away. Just one of life's little frustrations. In the meantime I am using my FastStone Capture but it does make the process twice as long, and the result, in my opinion, is not as sharp as the original scan.

Options to consider:
1. What scanner do you employ? if Epson perfection you have a "carousel" option Place 36 stamps on the platen, draw a carousel around each stamp, press scan, and the software will scan each of the 36 stamps individually, whilst you have a cup of tea, and an Iced Vo Vo.
2. ACDSee if you have it, open original scan, depressing the LEFT hand mouse button, draw a carousel around which portion you wish to retain, and select "save as"

Tony, are you using windows? If so, the snipping tool I described earlier will do exactly that. For example, if you scan an album page then bring that album page up on your screen using whatever software you want, you then open the snipping tool, select a stamp, then save as xxxx.jpg or whatever image format you wish.
good luck, Theron

Your number 1 suggestion worked like a charm (and even better than the old way) - I just had to change the scanner settings to Professional from Home. However, in the old days I always had HP scanners and the individual selecting/saving was done through the graphics program raather than through the scanning program. But, I must admit, your "carousel" option is a lot better than anything I ever had. Thanks a bunch.

I have just added it to my taskbar and start-up menu to compare it with FastStone for a few days. Thanks again.

We certainly have Tony. Everyone whom contributes inspire me, but major influences in my journey
1. Blair Stannard 2. Anne Mette Heindorf 3. Abandoning Stanley Gibbons 4. Adopting Scott and William Steiner. 5. Using mounts for Mint stamps.
PS: Consider Steve Tomisek's suggestion, adhering a matte black page to the lid of your scanner I have had mine on for 4-5 years.
As brilliant as the Seiko software in Epson scanner is, there is one major flaw. Each scan does not have the option to save as a date automatically, eg YMD Year Month day I like to date all my scans

I have had mine for about the same time. Actually it was Mette who first suggested it. We were having a friendly email argument about the rhythm bases of Gade's Jealousie Tango Tzigane and Anderson's Blue Tango and I sent her a copy of the base line of Anderson's. She wrote back telling me to stick a piece of black paper to the lid of my scanner so people can actually see stuff that happens to be on white. Seems like yesterday.

Thanks in advance. 1. After you made your selection, copy it (Ctrl+C). 2. Open MS Paint, and paste it (Ctrl+V). 3. Save image as jpeg or png The above works on all Windows machines. Your graphic software of choice may also be able to do point 2.

Agree with classicalstamps. That's the only way to do it out of the box.
The only thing you can enhance this process is to automate it with macro/script (that does all the steps for you) and assign a shortcut (Fn-key) for it.
Help section of any photo editing program (be it Photoshop or PSP) will provide advice about the implementation and the steps required. At least with Photoshop it's simply a matter of recording the major steps on the screen, and then later-on finetuning the steps by by modifying the code found inside the ATN-file. Yes, it's somewhat geeky, but it also gets the job done...

I am having trouble understanding the above. It seems very involved. If you have a scan of say 24 stamp images from 1 pass on the platen,
Just open the master image it in Windows explorer, hold the left mouse button down and draw a carousel around the image then "save as" You have no need of specialised software.
Apologies if I am missing something.

Apologies if I am missing something. I have just previewed a dozen argies. I marqued them individually and selected "scan all". I ended up with 12 individual images titled image01.png, image02.png, etc. Perfect! The png was my selection in preferences. Rod, when I use marque it is the same as your carousel: your say tomato, I say tomato.

Yes that is fine with the cynosure on the scanner.
My attention was on your previous original query, how to "save as" when you have made 1 pass, and need to isolate each stamp from an image of multiples.
Your scanner individual images, is standard routine for multiple passes. Your choice as *.png must be personal, I think *.jpg is better for my applications. I select my *.jpg, do a "file / save as" and overwrite the image, it automatically drops the size from 400 Kb to a handy 150Kb for posting on Forums. I scan at 600dpi as *.jpg
If scanning a full platen of say 40 stamps from Portugal, why not drop into options, and make naming "Portugal image 01." etc & etc
With my "Duck Capture" or "Freestone capture" I have my naming as default as YMDHM = Year Month day Hour minute, fabulous for scans of my Purchases Bank statements etc etc. I just wish Epson scanner had a similar option

But if everything you're trying to capture is visible on your screen at the same time, the PrintScreen button will do the same thing in Windows (PrtScr or however it may be abbreviated). Hit PrtScr and a screen capture is placed on your clipboard, and then you can open your graphics editing program (MS Paint or similar), paste the clipboard contents, and then crop off anything unwanted.
