I found this postcard in a dollar box and was intrigued by the combination of the message that highlighted the imperforate stamp, that stamp, and the two postage-due stamps. The cancellation ties all three to the postcard at the same time. I have tried to find any mention online of this 1987 definitive series having any imperforate varieties. My suspicion, given the anecdote in the message, is that the sender was persuaded to buy a "stamp" that was not an official issue. Then, when the sender took the postcard to the post office, a clerk noticed the "stamp" and collected the postage due, which was documented with the two postage-due stamps. Another option is that printer's waste was not kept secure, and a mid-production sheet escaped. If you could confirm or refine my reading of this cover, I'd be grateful. Botswana is not one of my usual areas for collecting postal history.

I did a quick search and similarly could find nothing regarding imperforate varieties for this issue.
Given the "I bought it from a guy" assertion in the text of the card, I wonder if the 5t was a counterfeit.

I have been sorting through a lot of British Empire in Africa and learning a lot about the countries (old names, new names).

Botswana is not one of my usual areas for collecting postal history. As Steve noted, specialized catalogs make no mention of this imperforate issue and fortunately your scan is very good so...
The header of the postcard stamp when compared to others on auctions (12+) shows a thicker less distinct type. This is fairly typical of lithographed copies. There are several other issues also. African stamps even very low value ones are copied in large quantities, most modern ones for postal fraud.

The stamps of the Southern Africa British colonial era are wonderful and as usual with any stamps from that period beautiful. The 1932 King George issue features an attractive view of Bechuanaland, now known as Botswana.

Thanks for the tip for comparing scans of legitimate and potentially counterfeit versions. I bought the postcard for $0.50 US, so I think the money was well spent to get an item with an interesting story. Another option is that printer's waste was not kept secure, and a mid-production sheet escaped. If you could confirm or refine my reading of this cover, I'd be grateful. I think I'll keep looking for a contemporaneous postcard from Botswana to the U.S. If I can find one and determine the airmail postcard rate, I should be able to determine whether the postal service in Botswana used postage due stamps for the full amount or a portion of the prevailing rate. I did a quick search and similarly could find nothing regarding imperforate varieties for this issue. Given the "I bought it from a guy" assertion in the text of the card, I wonder if the 5t was a counterfeit.

I haven't got many stamps of this area, but thought this one would be nice to share as it's essentially a fore-runner: Scott #6, Botswana overprint on Bechuanaland Protectorate stamp, 2c, 1966:

darkormex I've just recently begun a collection of Botswana, good to know you had some luck with kiloware. I've got a sorry amount of on-paper stamps that I need to work on, but I don't think there is any Botswana in there. Thanks for posting!

katie333, I have a fairly good accumulation of Botswana both mounted on album pages and on stock pages. The range is from the 60s to the 00s. Let me seek out your trade thread and post more there.
