Yes the elephants crossing the river is a classic stamp. One of my favourites and I used it to win a 'beauty' contest (how could it lose?) on another forum. |

I recall posting a similar image to SCF in 2010... I have the original photograph somewhere. Anyway, a scan of the photograph is below. The photograph was taken at Kraal Town, Ceylon, at 9:00 am on March 13 1929. The event was the culmination of a kraal of 40 elephants. Some 2,000 native bearers, under several mahouts organised by Nugawella Dissawa, were involved in the roundup of elephants.  |

That would almost certainly answer the where, and the who. I recognize the corner mounts.
For years I saved images and tried to capture some information in the file name. That lost a lot of information. I've taken to sometimes saving threads or parts of threads that I want to remember as pdf files, which keeps everything together much better.

We need an image whizz, Phil used to be good at that, cutting off one side of the stamp, and aligning it with another side, in your case top. to indicate reperfing etc. You may have that very exclusive "cruise" |

I did a quick & sloppy twiddle, cropping the horizontal perforation and rotating it to place it alongside the vertical. It is different, about one perf tooth in 29, which is about what you would expect for this (exact 13.5 and 14 would give 27 holes in one direction equalling 28 in the other).  Ryan |

Perfs, So now what? do you write to Stanley Gibbons? Wouldn't a more effective way to get the attention of Stanley Gibbons, Scott, etc., be to first submit the stamp to an expert committee as a perf. variety to have them certify your finding? |

Stanley Gibbons may know whether the variety exists. It may not be that rare, like the recently re-discovered Barbados 1927 1d carmine Tercentenary of Settlement perf 12 x 12½ variety. First reported to Stanley Gibbons by Dr J Jolliffe in 1940, and subsequently forgotten until revived by Dr Neil Tucker in 2012.
If Stanley Gibbons don't know, then I will seek a certificate.

Then the stamp shall be a rarity, and the market would set the value.
Hopefully it would be listed in Gibbons, in the next printing.
Hard nosed Ceylon collectors would fight over it, one would assume.
It's the repayment of hours and hours of checking perforations on normal stamps.
