In the little village I grew up we had a small post office as kids we would have post office savings accounts You get a book and but saving stamp, which were the normal definitive stamps of the time fill up the book and the clerk would cancel the stamp and add the money to your account. I often think that's why there are so many definitive stamps from Ireland, these would have ended up at convents and processed as kilo ware (Just my opinion).
This office is now close and has a pillar box in the village for peoples needs.
As bit of a history buff that most of us are I always remembered a old post box that was inserted in a wall at a old church and graveyard that was just a 10 minute walk from the village. This was the old Church of Ireland that is now in ruins.
I was wondering if its still around so I took a road trip using google maps and street view
On the entrance way you will see the green post box.
I tried to zoom in but was only getting fuzzy pics or distorted images.
What I could remember about this box as a kid was that it had the ER VII on the box and the door was replaced with SE and the Irish harp.
I went on face book and asked if anyone in the area could take a snap of it for me.
A few hours latter I had this image posted on Facebook. As you can see it has many years of paint. I remember the post office van pulling up to the old boxes and giving them a quick scrub with a wire brush and slapping on a good coat of paint. They put up a sign Wet Paint, if you have any Irish stamps with green paint this is probably why
This picture was taken a couple of years ago by a friend of mine, I was chatting with him asking how he got the photo so quick.
He took it because his daughter had a history project for school and needed a subject, she was thinking of ancient Egypt, so he took a photo of the box and told her write a story about the history of the box. As he told his daughter why bother doing something on Egypt to something Local.
Maybe I might be able to get her project and post it here.
