Dog license stamps. Forbin lists these as 1865 and 1890, with a watermark difference. Forbin doesn't mention the J.F.W. 1891 overprint. (I have two of them, so I assume it is an overprint of some sort.) One website I found explained that a dog tax was 2 shillings per dog, with a 6d administrative fee. Apparently, the old license records are used by genealogists. Here is the site I mentioned: www.findmypast.com/articles/world-records/full-list-of-the-irish-family-history-records/institutions-and-organisations/ireland-dog-licence-registersNothing about stamps, really, but a discussion of the tax and the records that are still available for searching. Ireland made quite a bit of money off of the tax, with more than a third of a million dogs registered in the first year. By the way, if you hadn't guessed, the dog is an Irish Wolfhound.

That's correct, the ones I have seen, the purple stamp has an Oval Clerk of Petty Sessions stamp, together with a signature, manuscript cancel. The 6d green stamp have a boxed clerk of Petty sessions stamp. I'd suggest the "J.F.W. / 1891" is a rubber canceller, used at a local Court of Petty sessions, the whereabouts unknown. I think the clerk used the rubber canceller on all the stamps, in your case, possibly all dog licences became due around the same time, and the canceller made life easier. The Green Licence stamp used on the same document thestampforum.boards.net/post/20888

Makes sense. With their penchant for record keeping and almanac-ing, I suspect the clerk's name could be teased out with a bit of digging. That project will have to wait for the person intent on putting together an exhibit. An Irish wolfhound society has an image of a license from 1914 at this page, for anyone who is interested: www.irishwolfhoundarchives.ie/irishwolfhoundinirishlife.htmIt shows the 2sh license fee stamp and the 6d stamp for the administrative portion. Several sites confirm that licenses had to be renewed by March 31st in each year. One family's site has this to say about the process: Interesting stuff.

Interesting dog license stamps...I will have to dig out mine, as it's not in my Ireland album...picked it up years ago and filed it somewhere!!! My contribution for this thread: One Shilling Land Commission stamps, each with lots of perforated initials ( perfins). I have quite a few more of the same denomination. Most have paper remnants on them, as while washing them off the perfins caused the stamps to tear very easily. If anyone has something similar to trade please message me!
