An allegorical young woman (I think her name is "Portugal", but I'm not sure) reading Os Lusiadas, the national epic of Portugal. Author Luís de Camões lived in the 16th century, a generation or two before Shakespeare. Os Lusiadas - The Lusiads - is a long poem that is a highly romanticized - even mythologized - rendering of Vasco da Gama's voyage to India. Aficionados and students of early lit have compared it to the Aeneid and the Iliad and Odyssey; but it is not well known in most of Europe, as Portugal was geographically isolated from the rest of the continent and its culture never spread the way those of France and Italy did. Camões is still considered Portugal's greatest poet, and his impact on the language is incalculable. These stamps are but four of a 1930s series of - get this! - 23, all of the same design. Portugal has a long history of long series; one from 1925 commemorates the birth of novelist Camillo Castello-Branco 1 and has 31 stamps, each about three times the size of the Lusiad stamps. Camões got 31 stamps himself the previous year. 2 I've never systematically collected Portuguese stamps, even by my very lax definition of "systematically"; I've wanted to, but it can be daunting without setting strict ground rules and sticking to 'em. I've noticed that Portuguese stamps are very much about the past. So are Italy's and Greece's, but Portuguese stamps, at least through the 1970s, don't often even acknowledge the present. (This has changed; these days their stamps are very colorful and attractive and have contemporary themes, but the sheer quantity, and the persistent tendency to include multiple values in a set, is still a bit hard to keep up with.) 1 I've never heard of Camillo Castello-Branco. Obviously, that says more about me than about him, but I think of myself as having learned quite a bit just from hanging out a lot in libraries and secondhand bookstores, so it surprises me. But I really can't think of any Portuguese writers before José Saramago whose work was readily available in English and/or in the United States. 2 These numbers don't even count the Madeira and Azores overprints.

Issued on 28 January 2000 to celebrate 'People and Events of the 15th Century'. (Gambia) The Mainz Psalter was printed in 1457 by Fust and Schöffer on Gutenberg's press. It is a remarkable book: the first to be printed in colour, the first to use two sizes of type, the first to bear a printer's mark and the first to carry the date of its printing. Johann Fust was Gutenberg's financer and provided substantial loans to the printer. In 1455 he foreclosed on the loans and took possession of the press in settlement of the debts. He then entered into a printing partnership with Peter Schöffer

I was also given the 2023 book of Chinese stamps. Interestingly, on the opening page one finds this souvenir sheet that lists the philatelic program for that year:
Of course, if you want scans of the issues I did not post, feel free to ask! I'll be happy to oblige.
