ObockNot sure if Obock warrants its own thread, or whether Somali Coast and Djibouti should be lumped in together. An October 2, 1899 postmark. Obock was a French colony, and still exists as a small port town in Djibouti. The French set it up as their own coaling station for ships so that they had energy independence from the British (who sold coal from nearby Aden). The stamps are interesting as they are imperforate but have a perf pattern incorporated into the design.

I also do not have any beautifully SON-cancelled copies of these Obock stamps (very nice, cjd!), but was very happy to find a mint LH set at the big stamp show in NYC in May-2016. Here they are now mounted in my brown Scott Int'l 19th Century Album.

Hello, nikhil ! I enjoyed your recent post in your WW collection thread, as I am a fan of both the classic Obock stamps and the Nyassa issues, especially the overprints. I agree with Michael ( mdroth), I think that your stamp looks quite genuine, not that I am any authority on the subject. Anyway, if you look at my preceding post in this thread, you will see the complete set which contains the stamp you have. I was very happy to add this set to my collection, as I never had any of these issues before I bought these.

Obock was the precursor to the Somali Coast.

When the French moved their main outpost in the Red Sea area from Obock to Djibouti and then formed the French Somali Coast, they took a stock of Obock stamps with them. Not all were overprinted. Many Obock stamps were actually used in Djibouti. See the following cover as evidence: I would like to suggest that threads for Obock, Somali Coast, and also Afars and Issas be combined, and treated as the same 'country' for stamp collecting purposes, even if Scott inexplicably separates them.

The paper used for the Obock issue is unusual - looks like it is embossed with squares? Does anyone know anything about these? It looks like waffles! I don’t collect Obock, but I have one set in my “Magpie” collection.

The 'quadrille' paper was left over from an experiment for a French stamp, Scott 103. It was used for the Obock and then the Djibouti/Somali Coast pictorials.

Thank you! Quadrille sounds much more “philatelic” than “waffle paper”.

It is rather goofy how Scott sometimes separates the same entity because the name changed. Another example of that is Alexandretta and Hatay.

Here is a cover from Obock to Perim, a nearby island belonging to Aden: And, as more evidence that Obock is really Djibouti, here is a cover using an Obock stamp postmarked Djibouti, addressed to the Ethiopian city of Dire Dawa:

OBOCK French TerritoryAs part of my project involving the French Colonies/protectorates in Africa, OBOCK's turn came up - I have no new stuff to show you on my 1st page of 1894 stamps - Chris Beryllium Guy and others have shown very nice specimens - I thought of adding a bit of History to understand the evolution of stamps in this part of the World - sorry it is in "french" but google translate can help if interested FRANCE acquired the territory of OBOCK in 1862 and Obock was developped as a colonial port. Without repeating the text, it is good to understand that these imperf stamps were issued in 1893 and 1894. Now situated in the Republic of Djibouti, way back in history, Djibouti's protectorate stamps were actually, at first, OBOCK's remaining stock, surcharged DJ or "Djibouti". This quick version in history is not complete, as my friends Xavier and Chris will note so please forgive my ignorance if I have not touched the Somali Coast (French) as well as the French Territory of Afars and Issas. btw some of the stamps do have very nice SON CDS (postmarks) !! Here is Obock postal stationary with some stamps attached, sent from Djibouti in 1911. The item is philatelic as the letter testifies.

A little eBay lot came into today, wanted to share (Scott 50 bisect, 52, 54, 57). The one tied to the newspaper I don't know near enough about, with the "moite" or bisect (YT 51a). Dallay shows that the postmark was for one day only, July 12, 1901. What's neat with Obock is you can collect some very affordable items and they're just as interesting looking as the more expensive stuff, with perhaps the exception of the diamond triangle issues.
