Back in the 1990s I was an avid collector of aircraft on stamps, less so now. I did accumulate quite a few aircraft stamps and some of them got mounted. This page of Ecuadorian stamps is one of my favorite aircraft on stamps sets. Of particular interest to me is the airplane depicted on the first stamp of the second row, a Boeing Model 247-D. Because of the short duration of its airline service, the Boeing Model 247 is infrequently depicted on stamps. The 247-D constituted a leap forward in design and comfort for air travelers. It seated only 10 passengers, but the aircraft design was a breakthrough. It was an all metal, low wing, twin engine aircraft with retractable landing gear, variable pitch propellers, and deicers for the wing and tail surfaces. It could climb on one engine, cruised at 155 mph, and had a range of 750 miles. It first flew in 1933. A total of only 75 Model 247s were built for the airlines. Additional sales were halted by the introduction of the Douglas DC models 1,2, and 3 which carried more passengers, faster, farther, and more economically. Still, many consider the Boeing Model 247 the first modern airliner. StampHinger Don

The 50th anniversary of Australia's first air mail flight, which was flown in a Blériot XI monoplane piloted by Maurice Guillaux, was commemorated by this 5 pence, olive green, perf. 14.5x14 stamp (Scott 382) issued on July 1, 1954. A 2 shilling 3 pence red stamp of the same design (Scott 383) was also issued on that date.
