What I collect: Worldwide Stamps, Ephemera and Catalogues

I researched and wrote this article, but I don't own any of the stamps or covers. Does anyone have any pneumatic mail stamps or covers? I'd love to see them! 2 months ago, I bid on a very early Italian Pneumatic stamped receipt. CV was $7,000 I bid only for the interest of investment, and a secondary for interest. I cooled off at $150, and believe it sold for circa $200 During the 1960's my mother worked for John Martins in Adelaide, South Australia, "Manchester" dept. and their inter office communications, were via pneumatic tube. I recall being mesmerised by the "Phroosh" and the "clonk" as the metal ? bakelite? cannisters, went to and fro in the spaghetti tubing.

It was a pretty cool technology. I assume most pneumatic stamps and covers are cost prohibitive?

It was a pretty cool technology. I assume most pneumatic stamps and covers are cost prohibitive? Not an area I am au-fait with, marry that with a limited knowledge of values, and there is a potential for loss. Material that passes through the Large Auction houses, set the bar for CV. Occasionally smaller dealers, online auctions, there are bargains to be had, but deep knowledge of your discipline is tantamount. I was gambling with my pneumatic item.

The stamps are not necessarily expensive. I have many of the Italian examples. Covers are going to vary, a lot.
For what it is worth, I think the French stamp commemorates the system, but I don't think it was issued specifically for pneumatic mail.

Time to revisit this thread . I am breaking up a collection that includes eight items of Pneumatic post mail , postcards and letter cards . I am off to walk the dog as she is impatient to get out to walk and roll in frosty grass ! Pictures to follow in a couple of hours . Around 1882 an unused letter card called a "Telegramme" with gummed sealing edges. Cost to send 50centimes . nice map of PARIS ."The violet area is already served, the shaded area will be served later"

The Paris System remained in used for many years I have seen one post WW2 but no longer have it . For longer correspondence envelopes were produced . This from 1905 has the tariff on the reverse,

By 1927 the rate had doubled to 60centimes for the first 7 grammes . This must have been between 15 and 30g so required an added 90c to make the required 1fr 50c Like I say in another thread @postal history is more than just Stamps Collecting

Opened in 1866 , it was still functioning 100 years later in 1966 . In fact it finally closed down as late as 1984

A similar System was used in Vienna Austria from1873 until the late 1950s It goes by the long title pneumatischen Expressbeforderung Two examples from the 1880s, one of which lists all the offices (Amter) of the tube system and the nearby streets served by the tube Most of the used cards I have seen have a vertical crease . I don't know if this was necessary to fit the card in the canister for dispatch, or just a misfortune of later storage.
