I am showing this as an example of the darker side of 'Stamp on Stamp'. This sheet exists in 4 other colours and the 5 'Penny Black' reproductions can often be found offered as 'Proofs', 'Rainbow Trials', 'Colour trials' and worse. Prices as high as $120 for each colour have been seen by me and I have had words with a couple of top GB dealers and Kelleher auctions about selling such things. They all withdrew them but they can still be found on online auctions at high prices. In reality, they are worthless. The sheets though are beautiful and would proudly adorn any page of a 'Stamp on Stamp' collection !
I have scanned in the remaining four sheets, as I think these are worthy of showing. Considering these are cinderellas, the quality of engraving is top notch: Detail showing Tower Bridge and The Tower of London in the background:
Detail showing the statue of Queen Boadicea; Westminster Abbey; the Houses of Parliament; and Big Ben in the background:

These are great-looking cinderellas showing the Penny Black in these different colours, and I agree that the engraving is superb. I will have to be on the lookout for these to see if I can come by a set of them without having to spend the big money mentioned by LB1. Once again, I have learned something new, as it never occurred to me that "stamps on stamps" issues could also be found as cinderellas, and this set is exceptionally nice.

Here is one of the earliest "stamp on stamp" issues that I am aware of. This one is Portugal, Scott #570, 40-cent scarlet, printed by typography with embossed head, and issued on 1st June 1935 to commemorate the First Portuguese Philatelic Exhibition.

You won't need to spend big money for the sheets. You can find a decent set for about $25, if lucky even less. The big money I mentioned above was for the cut-outs, something that should be wiped out from our hobby. One could form a very large collection of Cinderellas on the topic 'Stamp on Stamp'.......or stamp on Cinderella stamp !! A sideline of which could be 'Cinderella stamp on Cinderella Stamp' !! ... the 5 'Penny Black' reproductions can often be found offered as 'Proofs', 'Rainbow Trials', 'Colour trials' and worse. I hadn't noticed upon your initial posting, but I spotted it when Anping followed up with scans of the various colours. Note that the two Penny Black examples in each sheetlet are not the same - one is a reproduction of a normal stamp, and the other shows a VR Official. They weren't lazy when creating these issues - three full engravings required for each sheetlet of 6, plus tweaking the upper corners on one of the Penny Blacks! Ryan

Ryan Oh yes, and I have seen at least one dealer cut out both from all the sheets (and I mean cut out....with scissors) and charge more for the VR types !! I have had many an angry email asking me to 'mind my own business' when I made my complaints. I continue to do it until today.

I'm kind of surprised there isn't a thread for this already. Maybe I missed it. This is for stamps that contain images of stamps. Kicking it off with the 1970 Great Britain Philympia series, Scott #642-644 (SG 835-837). More to follow Sorry about the spot on the Queen. Time to clean the scanner. I'll replace the image but am out of time right now.

Bragging rights for whoever has (and posts) the earliest (oldest) stamp on stamp stamp. Game on! I don't know which stamp that would be, let alone if I have it, but I'll make a stab (or a few) at it. My first try is: West Germany, Michel 113-115, centenary of German stamps, from 1949: And they're not too shabby as a first post either...

Oh well, I have found that album pages are like BASIC programs I wrote years ago - always being tweaked for improvements! Here is my Mexico stamp on stamp issue...

None of these are close to the early ones posted from the 1940's. But they are stamps on stamps. Ryukyu Islands (Okinawa) July 1 1958, Sc#43. This was the stamp that got me thinking about making this topic. Maldive Islands Sep 9 1961, Sc#77 Togo Jan 12 1963, Sc#438-439 Uruguay, I assume it's 1964, but the identity of these stumped me. The first one depicts a 1924 stamp honoring the Olympics, and the second one depicts a 1928 stamp. Can anyone help me ID these two Uruguay stamps?

These are kind of unique. They are from Jersey, 1969 (SG30-33 I think). They commemorate Jersey assuming control of their postal services. Each stamp depicts a first day cover with the stamp showing the first day cover with the stamp showing …. ad infinitum. Each stamp depicts itself!

I concede. You have a wider range and 1 more stamp of this series than I do, plus they're in better shape, so you win. Unless of course someone else can post the whole series or there are even earlier stamp-on-stamp issues to be found.

And here is an East German souvenir sheet on the theme...
I particularly like this one (but didn't think of it last night) because it's a sheet issued by one country, but the country name changes between the two stamps, as this was issued right at the transition between the Soviet Zone and DDR postal administrations.
