Four shillings! Now there's a different face value, I don't know if I've seen any others (old classic shillings, not the Tanzanian kind). A long-term (very long-term) project would allow me to know for sure, as I use face values for rough sorting of my piles of stamps. But the very long-term project is a very long way off in the future ....

Four shillings! Now there's a different face value, Ryan The 4 shillings prior to 1940 are not overly common. There were about 12-15 Br. Commonwealth countries that issued them in a few series particularly in fiscal stamps. I know Antigua, Bermuda, Gambia, Gibraltar, Kenya, Rhodesia, Madagascar, Montserrat are on the list.

Final GVI series SG 121-134 with the change in currency The main producing areas are in the Layou River Valley and on the southwest coast. In 2000, 21,000 tons of grapefruit, 1,000 tons of lemons and limes and 8,000 tons of oranges were produced. Unfortunately a lot of difficulties prevents more from reaching North America; hurricanes, lack of storage facilities, low prices to farmers by the marketing board, pests and diseases. The banana crop in Dominica was basically wiped out by the Black Sigatoka disease by 2012 A strain of resistant bananas was imported from St Vincent and introduced in 2015. This year it was reported that the trials were successful and the first crops were harvested. Carib Baskets are very elaborate. Recently they were featured on the "How It's Made" TV program Did you know that in Dominica oranges are called "Chinas" & bananas are called "Guineos"Find out why Chinas

First of all, kudos to Nelson (@falshung ) for all of the great posts on this thread already. The photos in your posts always look so professional. This past year, I had the good fortune to acquire some of these classic Dominica stamps myself, so here are a couple of pages from my brown-cover Scott International albums: I am still missing some of the higher values, so I will need to keep looking to find those.

Not too shabby, Chris! Something about the definitive sets of BC really attract me, and this is a nice one! Thanks for the nice comments, Bobby! I got lucky with this set, as I found a complete set which was mostly well-centered (VF or better), but shortly thereafter had the chance to buy some singles, and I was able to upgrade almost all of the off-center stamps from the first purchase with better copies. So, the resulting set turned out pretty well. I agree with you that many of these old BC sets are really beautiful, especially the ones with at least two colors in the design.

Disney and Stamp collecting I noticed these while going through a collection I purchased. The original owner printed them on a not very good printer on thin paper plus used hinges that were like fabric.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

This week's arrivals included these additions to my Dominica collection. Both are mint with original glue but hinged. The Sc. 10 bisect are one of the few bisect stamps that have value off cover due to the overprint. The Sc48 1920 2 shilling 6 pence fills another hole of some of the high value Roseau stamps I am missing.

I am gradually filling in spots in my Dominica collection. I love the SON cancel from the small town of Pointe Michel on this 2 shillings Scott 32. It is almost too perfect so possibly it was from a philatelic cover. No matter it is still a real nice stamp.

This is a fun use of the Dominica bisect with a pair of them used along with the surcharge written downward. The seller had it listed as Scott 11 while my version of the catalogue shows it as 11a due to the downward direction. It makes no difference to the value.

hdm1950 hi, nice bisect. never seen anything like this. will keep a lookout . thanks for sharing are there any other countries that have done this to their stamps ? Bisects are quite common in that era through at least commonwealth countries. Many are not surcharged like these and must be on a verified cover to be considered legitimate because anyone can cut a stamp in half and call it a bisect.

hdm1950 hi, nice bisect. never seen anything like this. will keep a lookout . thanks for sharing are there any other countries that have done this to their stamps ? Colombia has some; so do Costa Rica, Honduras, and El Salvador. They were usually done when remote post offices ran out of stamps and couldn't get new supplies. That part of the Americas is very mountainous and prone to earthquakes and hurricanes, so many parts of those countries, sadly, can be considered remote at any given time. Like hdm1950 said about the Commonwealth, these items generally have to be found on cover or at least on paper before they're even considered to be legit, and expertization is often needed even after that. Doctoring of Central American stamps for a collecting market in the United States has a long history. Collecting those things is not for the faint-hearted! I have never in my life seen an example like hdm1950's Dominica - two potential bisects used as a single stamp. It's inventive and strangely wonderful.

My Dominica Queen Victoria collection is fleshing out quite well. It has been a slow one stamp at a time process. The Scott 2 was the latest arrival so I thought I would show the page as it stands now.

Fate brought this to my attention as a buy-it-now item on eBay, the $2.40 QEII picking oranges pictorial, but with a nearly unnoticed debris on the black plate defect in the form of a circular punch-out as one might find with a typical paper hole punch. The round punch-out was sufficinetly thick as to deboss the paper easily seen especially in the blank selvage.
This tells me that time has come to redo my picking oranges pages.

Serendipity, fate or just plain luck JeffS, you find some interesting items for the collection and I admire the 'eye'.
It is items like this, that make one's collection unique...
Have fun and happy collecting!
