After ordering the Greenland Thule clichés way back in September, the 2nd mailing from the eBay dealer arrived today. So between doctor appointments and other stuff, I'll get around to seeing what makes each one different... I was wondering how to differentiate between the various sheets, but they are all marked on the back as to which is which. How convenient!

It has been a quiet week due to work. I did get in a purchase of Bermuda stamps that will be mounted soon.

Today I received a couple of lots from an online seller I follow....the first item is a 1923 German cover from the hyper-inflation era, which is my most seriously studied area. The censor-like tape applied actually was used for currency control at the time. Mostly applied to incoming mail as the German postal authorities wanted to intercept any valuable currency coming into the financially strapped nation. Although the reverse has a cut-out section (which detracts terribly) I was intrigued as to why this currency control label was used on outbound mail (to Norway). Until now I've only seen it on incoming mail.

The lot of 2,522 mostly used German stamps & covers from an auction way back in September finally arrived to its new home yesterday. There are 1,451 different stamps & 17 FDC's. It includes officials, perfin's, Saar, Berlin & the DDR as well. All the covers are from the DDR, mailed to British Columbia, Canada.
I think it will take me a while to figure out what exactly I have here.
EDIT: Further to this, I just submitted bids on more German stamps. I should know in a couple hours if I was successful or not. Judging from last week's auction, I probably will be. Crossing my fingers just in case!

I came across this cover from the United Kingdom a while back. I remember picking it up for around a dollar (maybe less), as I liked the fact it was mailed twice! First to Jamaica, then it was forwarded back to Scotland using Jamaican stamps. Upon closer inspection I see also that is has a PERFIN ( perforated initial) stamp, with the initials G.S. on the originating QEII stamp. In honor of my late stamp-collecting friend Neil Boatwright who collected perfins (on or off cover) I am sharing it here! Since I didn't really collect perfins, I would save any I ran across for Neil. Now that Neil is no longer with us, I feel duty-bound to collect them for him!!!

I moved into my new office (and stamp room). Yeah! I still need to move in two bookcases, install some shelving in the closets, etc.

Also, since I have ordered from Mystic stamp (have the US Heirloom album), I still get mailings despite being asked to be removed from mailing list. In the last week, I got three - rewards report, tabloid sized mailing, and a smaller mailing with mostly supplies. I will be ordering a 2018 Heirloom supplement.

I moved into my new office (and stamp room). Yeah! I still need to move in two bookcases, install some shelving in the closets, etc. Seems to be a popular move, relocating stamp dens! I'm still working on mine, three months later. And now it seems just as messy as my old stamp room was! Since I started collecting in 1970, I counted approximately 19 different stamp rooms in sixteen different homes I've lived in! The first few moves were easy--carry a small album or two, and a reference book or three, and don't forget the stamp tongs. Now it's more like moving dozens and dozens of heavy boxes of both albums and literature. Maybe several hundred books/albums/catalogues, plus all the related files and piles. And boxes and totes. Add the desk, several tables of varying sizes, a computer, couple of chairs (including a comfy recliner), lamps, and of course the many shelves. No wonder I dread the thought of ever moving my stamps again!

Well, the results are in! After several weeks and a transatlantic trip for Beryllium Guy to go through many of my duplicates and find some good trades between us, our stamp lunches have yielded quite a nice crop. This is what I selected from him: We have, from top to bottom, the 1926 Italian series for the 700th anniversary of St. Francis of Asissi (the patron saint of my fraternity, so of special interest to me), a 1951 Spanish Guinea series, some Nyasaland fillers, the French Guinea 1966 series for the centenary of Egyptian stamps, and a postal stationary envelope from Grand Comoro island. And then the pièce de résistance: The 20ct Canada QV Jubilee stamp! I cannot thank Chris enough for offering such a beautiful piece for trade. He is getting some 300+ stamps of mine in return (takes a while to add up to this much CV), but I still feel like a winner here!

I haven't been posting much for a while now, I have been busy with family functions almost all of December till yesterday! Finally I have a little more time to spend with my stamps.
Stamping activities over the past 1 month-
1.In between when I did get some time, I found a package which was not opened as yet! I don't know when did it come, but anyways I opened it, and I found a Mystic 2014 US Catalog !!!!. Yay I finally own a printed catalog. It was sent from a friend from another forum.
2. I have been reminding by dad for stockbooks for quite some time back, He did find a shop over here in Mumbai itself named ' International stamps and coins'. But it seems the stockbook rate is too much compared to other places from other parts of India. I still have to decide from where do I buy them.(I need about 5, so will have to take a proper decision before buying.
3. From when I started collecting stamps last year till now I have quite a few duplicates which I would like to trade or giveaway. So when I get time maybe within a month a will post some stamps for trading.
4. I have been buying occasionally a few stamps from a seller in India, and some times I have received the same stamps as a giveaway etc. And more often than not the free ones are better in condition than the ones which I bought. So, my dad gave me an idea about selling some duplicates online- ebay/delcampe/hipstamp. I still have to decide on that.

I scanned the clichés of the Thule locals I just received last week. It took a while as I scanned them at 1200 DPI on a wireless network. I copied the 10 øre value from each sheet and immediately noticed a small purple mark here and there & thought that it was odd. Geeze, it is odd. The scanner/software combo put these little purple marks here & there. Close-up inspection with the magnifying glass showed nothing. I'll have to clean the glass on the scanner & try again. There is a bit of roughness on the frames, but nothing to say I am cliché 1 or 2 etc. At least not that I have seen yet. I'll have to re-scan them, but that will have to wait for another day. Funny though, if they are all different as Londonbus1 alluded, there is no info about it online that I could find. Just the ID printed on the back of each sheet.

This morning, I received a nice packet from hrdoktorx, with beautiful Greenland stamps (18) and they are already inventoried and in Album. They range from Scott 320 and up. A kind friendly gesture indeed. René

We didn't have time for a stamp lunch today, but Beryllium Guy and I had a quick swap of duplicates to look at today. He's been filtering through his African stamps and I got a nice full Ziploc baggie of goodies to sift through. Lots of fun to look forward to!

I am slowly cataloguing the German stockbook I received last week. Lots besides the FRG are included, with a few always interesting perfins. No traders in those though! Quality is well, what can one expect for something like this. I'll have to print out the Steiner pages for this soon. Just wondering though... there seems to be a LOT of Michel catalogues for Germany. Junior, advanced, 2015, 2019 etc etc etc. What one version of their many catalogues would be good for a basic collector like me? Any suggestions? Anything has to be better than Scott! Here is where I am at now...

That looks like a nice selection to start in with Germany, Peter. Thanks for posting! So, just out of curiosity, why do you say "anything has to be better than Scott"? Are Scott Catalogues really that bad? Being a member of TSF has really opened my mind to using other catalogues in addition to Scott, and I do that now much more than I ever did in the past, but for a "basic collector" as you describe yourself, why have you concluded that Scott is so bad? I am not trying to start an argument or anything, but in general, I consider Scott to be pretty good for WW use. It is at least a starting point, and if there are limitations, then I can try another publisher. I especially like their Classic Specialized Catalogue 1840-1940, which has all of the early issues in one very manageable volume. If you previously posted about this and I missed it, please accept my apologies.

This is the Michel version I use:- in combination with this translation guide:- I cannot find the data file from which I printed it, rather annoying. If you cannot find a copy online let me know and I will scan a copy for you.

So, just out of curiosity, why do you say "anything has to be better than Scott" 1. Not all stamps are pictured 2. Not all info is provided 3. Different types are separated as back-of-book. I like Michel all in chrono. order even though I mount separately (!) I suppose I have been put off Scott (AA) since they issued an iPad app for their catalogues. I thought it would be fantastic. But they did such a poor job of it. I demanded my money back. $50 for that crap? I sent them a lengthy e-mail about all the issues I had with it. They replied (!) thanking me & that they would look into them. They never came out with any updates. Michel has much more info on the issues. I find theirs much easier to use. I also looked into their online offerings, but didn't like the online only, proprietary format.

Thanks. Judging by the price alone, the Junior doesn't have much in it. Shipping of their top ranked catalog is 33€! Pass... I'll have to stick with Scott & Stampworld.com for now. I'll pop over to the local book store & see if they can order me up a catalog.

I also looked into their online offerings, but didn't like the online only, proprietary format. Thanks for your response, Peter. For what it's worth, I understand your point(s). I was also disappointed in the poor quality and poor value-for-cost for their electronic products. I had the Scott app on my iPhone, and I bought a section of the Classic Specialized Catalogue as a trial. It worked sometimes, but I kept having problems with the app, and had to keep deleting and re-installing it to access my purchases. Eventually, I found it easier to just take photos of pages from the print catalogue and take them with me when I went to see a dealer or to a stamp show. That worked better for me than having the app, so I deleted it and have not re-installed it. I still prefer to use a print catalogue when possible, but it is often not possible for me these days, so I have come to rely on the PDF versions on my laptop, and those work better than I expected. Yes, I suppose that Scott does not have a picture of each and every stamp. Are you saying by implication that other catalogues do? I would imagine that only a specialized catalogue for one specific country will have the space to be able to illustrate every single stamp, but perhaps there are other WW catalogues that do? So, do I gather then that you are planning to use Michel for identifying your German stamps, or are you still looking at other possibilities?
