I looked on ebay last evening, and spotted two or three 'DP' overprints for sale - reasonable money too I thought.

I cannot get excited about DP “overprints” any more than the assorted rubber stamps of other Hong Kong companies used to control their private stocks .They are not OFFICIAL , sanctioned by the post office , just private additions to regular stamps . They do not acquire catalogue status , just mere curiosities, and as such surely do not merit any premium value?

This is a scan from my latest Yang's Catalogue (2018). It lists it as HK$20-$25 which is about US$2-3.

Hong Kong King Edward VII 1903 First Series DefinitivesOnce again, I have fallen down on the job when it comes to updating this thread when I make new acquisitions. In this case, I added the 3-dollar value to this partial set a few months back, but I have been slow to get the scan done and post it. I am finally getting caught up a little. Hong Kong, Sc71-83, KEVII definitive stamps 1-Cent through 3-Dollar, watermarked Crown & CA (missing Sc84-85)

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

I am not sure about why colored paper was chosen for certain denominations of the stamps, other than perhaps it made them easier to distinguish for those who worked in the post office or who were handling the mail. I don't know; that's just a guess. Perhaps khj or someone else will be able to answer: In the UK, the Inland Revenue wanted double fugitive inks to be used for all stamps with values up to 2/6 to prevent removal of pen cancels and protect revenue. The ½d was exempted because it was only postcard rate and not a revenue rate. The double fugitive inks were made with lilac and green pigments. At the same time, the Post Office had to check the letters it handled for the correct postage to have been applied. This, often, had to be done in bad lighting. So, De La Rue experimented with bright colours to make the stamps more recognisable. This could be a bi-coloured stamp, or a stamp printed on dyed paper. The Queen's head, however, had to be printed in double fugitive ink. The result was that some stamps of the ‘Jubilee’ issue were printed in lilac / purple on blue, yellow, and rose-red papers. Apparently, De La Rue used the same paper dyes for other issues in the Empire.

In response to a request from Chris ( Beryllium Guy ). Here is what I have accumulated from the 2 Edward VII definitive series. wondering out loud why the value of the stamps was sometimes with a number , such as " 6 CENTS" and then another was "EIGHT CENTS". very strange. or perhaps the designer was different or the printing company was different. or.... please feel free to share your views or if you actually know , would love to find out thanks

I was told years ago at a HKSC meeting It was to ensure that the entirety of the bottom panel was filled so that an unscruplous person could not add a figure to defraud an unsuspecting buyer. Similarly leaving no space in the left hand panel for an additional character on the smaller values - most likely the symbol in Chinese of ten +
