I need help identifying this cover I just received. It is from 1865-1970 period (based on the U59 Postal Stationery). It starts with Boston and is a RPO. I checked references that I have and cannot find one. My best guess based on some more internet research is the Boston & Providence RR. I did find a period advertisment for this mail run in a Boston Commerce Magazine. It was an express run. between Providence, Boston and New York. Also looking at the size of the words in the Postmark that would seem to fit the font size. I did search for examples of this RR Postmark online but did not find much. Unfortunately the return address of NYC was hand crossed out so I don't know exactly where it was posted from Thanks for any help and comments are appreciated Mike

These RPO's can often be confirmed by their size. What is this one in exact mm.

Unfortunately the return address of NYC was hand crossed out so I don't know exactly where it was posted from That's the sender's name that has been crossed out - William Tilden Blodgett, a varnish magnate and philanthropist who was one of the founders of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the largest art museum in the U.S. Ryan

On another site, I was told it was the Troy and Boston RR which I have my doubts about. Does the Towle reference have info on this railroad?
Thanks

Troy-Boston Rail operated in 1850-60 period and I don't have a listing in the Towles book which is a later edition
Another that did the Troy route and size is perfect;
BOSTON & BRATTO. R.R. 25 mm. Blue Boston, Mass-Brattleboro, Vt. Fitchburg R.R., Vermont & Massachusetts R.R. Route Data-1882-Portion of Boston-Troy and Springfield-White River Jct. routes
but the cancel should be blue not black
However in the addendum, the author mentions a listing in another publication that the cancel is black but he never saw an example; BOSTON & BRATTO. R.R.-Black-(Perry and Hall - June 2,1934)

I'll see what research I can do looking at the Postmaster General reports. I had a suspicion that it was not Troy-Boston. I don't have a problem with a black PM. I've run into some discrepencies like this before with my fancy cancels on U58 and U59. Skinner and Eno sometimes list either black or blue in their cancel catalog and I have some covers that are the opposite color. I appreciate all this help.
I'm really enjoying solving this mystery.

Have you tried running a high resolution scan of the postmark through retroReveal?

I just tried it and it didn't show much more than what I could see with my loupe. A little bit more but not enough to read it. This is a tough one and I many never identify it with 100% certainty unless I run across another one. Luck be with me! I'll end the string until I find more info (if I do)
Thanks for everybody's input
