I've just taken delivery of a letter addressed to D. S. (David Sproat) Kennedy in New York, dated 1853. It's the second Kennedy letter in my collection. Kennedy was an agent for the Bank of Montreal in NYC, as well as other banks and the Canada Post Office Department. I understand Mr. Kennedy held the printing plates for Canada's first stamps in his office safe for safe keeping. This one was of particular interest to me for a couple of reasons. First is the Suspension Bridge NY postmark. This was a small town that sprang up near one of the suspension bridges across the Niagara River, near Lewiston. Also, as an employee of the Bank of Montreal, I've been thinking about starting a collection of Bank related material. This one actually has the name of the bank on Mr. Kennedy's address. Here are the contents. And here's the first Kennedy letter in my collection, part of my Niagara collection. It's sent from my hometown of St. Catharines, and crosses at Lewiston in 1850 It's contents list Thomas R Merritt, son of William Hamilton Merritt, the builder of the Welland Canal. Ive adjusted this letter in photoshop for legibility, since it's somewhat faded I would love to see other members Kennedy letters. I also have a question about the purpose of these. Obviously bank transactions. The newer letter talks about 'enclosed' and 'received for collection in account of the bank'. Would these have had cash in them (making them money letters) or perhaps just promissory notes? Can anyone fill me in on the history of these.
