The following link will take you to a most useful site that lists GB stamps in very simplified form. There are no prices (it's not a catalogue), just good images and details of stamps in sets for each year, from 1840 to 2018. The year can be selected from either a calendar panel on the right side of screen marked DISPLAY YEAR, or from a drop down menu selected from the top. It has a search function as well: Collecting GB stamps.

Thanks for posting this link. Just what I need to help organize that huge pile of GB stamps in the box in my stamp space.

Awesome. I'm soaking a pile of 70's and 80's stamps off paper now, so this will be a big help sorting them. Thank you!

I found Stampworld.com a decent resource for general worldwide identifier. This gets me to the issue date to find in Scott's or SG since they are not 100% illustrated. They have images for any stamp I looked up. It does not use Scott or SG numbers but grouped by sets so not too bad. You can search by year range, denomination, etc. It is definitely more simplified (fewer varieties) than SG in GB / Commonwealth.
I purchased Stamp Manage, a database inventorying program, and now use that. It uses Scott numbers and most have images.
