Lebanon Republic Issues under French Mandate 1927-1942 (Scott #72-155)
My apologies for the slow development of these threads for the appropriate time periods for Lebanon stamps in the early days. I know that Bombadil is anxious to display more material, and who can blame him? As the first TSF member from Lebanon, he is taking it upon himself to ensure that his homeland is well represented here, and I don't blame him one bit for that desire! So, here is an introductory post on this thread to give others an idea of what to expect. Shown below is a progression of Scott #50 10-centime dark violet issued in 1925 under the colonial period of French Mandate, but then afterward, this same stamp was first overprinted in 1927 (Scott #72) to indicate Republic of Lebanon in French, and then overprinted again in 1928 in Arabic, and finally surcharged later in 1928 to indicate 5 centimes over 10 centimes. There is clearly a rich philatelic history which shows the progression from the colonial period under French Mandate (1924-1927), then to the Republic still under French Mandate (1927-1942), and finally to the Independent Republic (1942 to present). These stamps below just show the beginning of the transition from colony to republic, with more to come in the following years.

Since receiving the giveaway from Bombadil, I had started, stopped, and now, restarted combining my previous collection of Lebanon stamps mounted in an old Scott International album, an accumulation of Lebanon stamps on a stock page and the stamps I had recently received from the giveaway. I was reminded when I started looking over the stock page, that I had set aside an "error" stamp that I wanted to get more information about. My Scott 2009 Classic Specialized lists it as no. 88 and also lists a minor no. 88a as an inverted overprint. My stamp is missing the "R" in Republique. I know or remember reading somewhere that there are numerous varieties found in these overprints and, so, wondered if our members could give me additional information or know of any internet resources that can provide me with more info.?

The stamp you showed is YT#100c (CV 33 euros). Yvert&Tellier lists 4 variants: 100a: Both overprints are inverted 100b: Double overprints 100c: Missing "R" 100d: Inverted Arabic overprint.

Thank you for your help. Scott has none of these additional details, or perhaps it does now but the 2009 volume does not.

Thank you for your help. Scott has none of these additional details, or perhaps it does now but the 2009 volume does not. No changes found in 2019 Scott e-Classic, so the 2009 has not been updated and I am not surprised YT is superior in this as described by Xavier - hrdoktorxRené

Looking through what I worked on yesterday and today I found a few odds and ends that I thought were interesting. I basically combined a bunch of Lebanon stamps, determined what were the best stamps (there were a number of dupes) and mounted them on Steiner pages I had printed several weeks back. The majority of cancels I saw were either Beyrouth, in Arabic, which I am unable to read, or simply too light or smudged to be readable but there were a couple that caught my eye... This one was postmarked with a parcel post cancellation: Scott 119, Crusader Castle, Sidon Harbor And this had the most distinct, non-Beyrouth postmark that I could find: Scott 129, Ruins of Sun Temple, Baalbek, Postmarked in Aitanit, possibly postmarked on September 10, 1934, if I am reading it correctly.

One puzzle I have is sorting out what I have here with these 3 stamps. All are probably Scott 114, Pigeon Rocks, Ras Beirut, however Scott lists a redrawn variant, Scott 135 with the following note: "Lines in rocks and water more distinct. Printer's name "Helio Vaugirard, Paris." in larger letters". As far as I can tell the lines are not more distinct on one copy vs. another and the printer's name is exactly the same size though lighter on one stamp vs. the two others. The only other major difference to me is that one is more yellow than the other two. Am I correct or is one of these Scott 135? Opinions welcome. My Yvert&Tellier French colonies catalog from 2011 provides a different way to differentiate the two issues. Look in the lower left corner at the position of the last "S" of the vertical "Postes" marking. The original issue has the S staying above the level of the white line framing the central motif. The redrawn issue has the S reaching the level of the bottom of the frame. So, in your case, I would identify the darker shade stamps as Sc#114 and the lighter one as Sc#135.

It is good to see threads dealing with stamps from Lebanon. I only started collecting these a few years ago, but the variety of overprints was what struck me, especially where early issues are concerned. The first post on this thread includes a good example where the same basic stamp has been modified by three different overprints adding the new country name, first in French, then in French and Arabic, then changing the face value. Here is another example showing how the same basic design has been used multiple times with different overprints:

To continue the above theme, here are some of the variations on the 0,75 piastre Beit ed-Din issue of 1925:
