and they are beautiful - hope my words not seen as being too 'picky', but just in case someone does think they are butterflies, these six attractive guys are in fact all moths - a couple of which we see in the U.K. as very rare migrants. thanks for posting:-)

We are "lucky" in German: lepidoptera are are "Tag-Falter" for butterflies (Tag = day) and "Nacht-Falter" for moths (Nacht = night). So little problem to put them together.
Issued Feb.23rd,1973.

the lepidoptera are such a beautiful group of insects which I suppose is why they were collected so avidly by the Victorians, and there are vast amounts of books and stamps on this subject. Just to confuse matters there are also a few moths that are known to fly only during the day - in English you are nocturnal if you are active at night, and diurnal if you are a day time guy. When I was seriously interested in these bugs I seem to recall the German word for butterflies was 'schmetterling' - as in Der Schmetterlinge Mitteleuropas - a book title. Very unfortunately, I now read that the word has been hijacked by modern youth - when I was checking my spelling it appears the word is now rarely used for the lepidoptera, and instead has become a German cuss word - a very unpleasant urban swear word - such a shame when I recall how it was used for so long to describe these attractive insects.

thanks salentin for your comments about 'little problem putting them together' - quite correct:-) Those hawk moths are some of the largest moths, very attractive and almost all - and there are many species throughout the world - have a unique larval feature which consists of a backward facing 'horn' which sticks up at their rear end:-)

I have never heard of that cuss-word.But that does not mean much,as I have no interest in that kind of sub-culture.
But I can assure you, that "Schmetterling" is still the word in universal use in the german world. I agree that it is a beautiful onomatopoetic (I hope I got this one right) word,as it describes the "clapping" of the wings of butterflies in flight.

amongst other things I'd like to make a point to offer sincere thanks and gratitude to all those who post on this platform for whom English is not their first language - especially since I'm very thick and lack any linguistic skills. Being picky again, I'm afraid ........... I'm aware that my hearing is deteriorating, but am sure I've still yet to hear the sound of butterflies wings 'clapping';-) - I rarely hear what my wife says - but unsure that we can say schmetterling is classed as onomatopoeic. I have a feeling that use of the word onomatopoeic is limited to those occasions when pronunciation of a word mimics the sound it describes. You've mentioned 'bang', then also there is 'coo' - pop - boom - baa etc. Anyway, you've made me happy to know that schmetterling is still the preferred German word for butterfly. I also have no interest in sub-culture and I avoid cliches like the plague. But I've digressed too much - so no more talk of things other than stamps.:-)
