There is an interesting article in this month's American Philatelist about that time frame as it relates to U.S. issues -- "Indispensible Issues Anchored a Turbulent Decade" by Fred Baumann (starts on page 1056).

Anyone know if there was a stitch watermark on the Admiral issue ? I just looked at something online that really resembles one.

Anyone know if there was a stitch watermark on the Admiral issue ? The Admirals study group of BNAPS is one of the relatively few active study groups which does not publish their newsletters online. They do publish a table of contents, however, and there is an article from Dec. 2010 (page 24) on the stitch watermarks found on 1c green and 2c carmine issues. They also publish some PDFs taken from PowerPoint presentations which summarize the presentations from the study group's annual meetings - the 2018 meeting had a presentation on a stitch watermark found on a 5c blue issue. Maple Leaves, the journal of the Canadian Philatelic Society of Great Britain, has a couple mentions of stitch watermarks as well. The October 1959 issue has a mention on page 21 (image on page 23) regarding the 1c green coil and the Spring 2000 issue has a mention on page 232 (image on page 233), again regarding the 1c green coil. There may be mentions in BNA Topics from BNAPS as well, I don't know. Marler's book on the Admiral issue has a brief mention on stitch watermarks on pages 35 & 36. Finally, here's an auction listing from Brigham Auctions from Ron Brigham's Admiral collection sold in 2015 (lot 22) that shows a 1c green sheet block with a stitch watermark. Ryan

firstfrog2013...therealwesty is correct..It is part of the cancel affecting what you see on the letter ""D""....Also, i do not see any indications of a re-entry. You can double check if you want on Ralph's web site..re-entries.com under Scott 226.

Map Stamp (Scott 85) – Missing Island?
From my reference materials, I have found only one recorded instance of a missing island in the Pacific Island Group (P.I.G.) Red Plate A Position 33, but that is for island number 2.
These two copies of the stamp appear to be missing island number 5...
Does anyone have additional information or insights?

Have lots of these..have not looked at all, but the only thing i realized id extra islands as shown below. Robert
Indeed Robert, there were two different red plates used (A for plates 1-3 and B for plate 5) and there are plenty of intermittent varieties of extra islands due to over inking of the plates.
I have seen three copies of the missing 5th island now and am curious if this has been associated with a particular plate and position...
Thanks, -Vince

Does anyone have additional information or insights? A response from another collector suggests these stamps come from Red Plate A Position 79 and Black Plate 2 or 3. The common characteristic of this position for the Red Plate according to him is the missing island 5 in the P.I.G. As well, the islands of the Indian Ocean Group (I.O.G.) also run together to form a blob with the printings in both the black plates as it does here in these two examples.
Given some minor differences between the two stamps, a fine line above the second letter A above the cables on one, a collection of different dash or scratch markings in the margin on the right 2¢ tablet of the other and distinct differences throughout the lettering "WE HOLD A VASTER EMPIRE..." would suggest both plates are represented: Black Plates 2 & 3. Just now need to confirm which is which...
Thanks to all that took the time to look!

That's a great text renden and it is on my shelves as well. Although specifically written for the Imperial Penny Postage issue, aka the "map stamp", it has sections on Squared Circle cancels, RPO strikes, Duplex and Flags cancels, etc. which are a good reference for anyone collecting early Canadian material.
As for the Map stamp, I recently found this text and have added it to my bookshelves...

If you are interested in map stamp plating, there is a book available.
Robert
My friend (will protect his name) has obtained what is probably the two largest 1898 map stamp collection in Canada...When it has been fully categorized, access to me will be available and can produce information to fellow stamp collectors.

renden , I do not recall where or when I purchased my copy of R.B. Winmill's text as it has been on the shelves for years. As for the Tomlinson text, I became aware of it from a reference on one of the websites @wert shared in an earlier post and found my copy through abebooks.com On the off chance I kept the receipt for the Winmill text (I am a hoarder that way), I looked in the front cover and although I did not find a receipt, I did find this,
2¢ Map Stamp (Scott No. 85) Cancelled 16 December, 1898
and will consider it as part of the Canadian Thanksgiving give-a-way you so generously have offered :-) Thanks for the prompt...

That is an interesting text as well @wert, especially considering that Plate 4 was never put into production and you will never see any stamps from that plate except with a visit to the National Archives. Thanks for sharing though...

Here is a cover that had an interesting start by paying the then 2¢ letter rate to Toronto, although I cannot determine the originating city or town.
(back receiving markings include Kingston, Canada and Toronto, Canada both dated 13 April, 1899)
I recently saw a posting for a website maintained by a TSF member that you could do location look-ups on, put failed to bookmark the URL. Can I ask someone to repost that URL?

As far as the website is concerned, you might be thinking of the Postmark Database run by our member tallanent. Note, however, that this is specialized for British postmarks. There is a small section for Canadian strikes, as well as a couple more countries, but the large majority of data is from the UK. And for your postmark, I think it might originate from Glasgow, Ontario. There isn't much of a Wikipedia page for it! According to the data shown on the Library & Archives Canada website for post offices, the Glasgow post office closed in 1913. Ryan

Thanks Ryan , much appreciated! I have book marked both URLs for future reference :-) Glasgow too was my initial thought, but given the proceeding 'O', I had my doubts and thought maybe 'Moscow' but did not think such a place existed in Canada until searching the Post Offices and Postmasters archives... thanks again!

I think you're right, it is Moscow. That looks like a better fit for the text around your postmark. Moscow, Ontario is another dead post office, closing in 1969 - Moscow is now a part of the township of Stone Mills. Ryan

The rest of the story... Whilst measuring the Moscow cover for an album page, out came the loupe (instinctive behaviour for me with this issue) and was pleasantly surprised to find the stamp tied to the cover was from Plates 5B, Position 32.
The stamp from this position has significant doubling on the left side of the design in the lower half of the border cable giving it an almost 3-D effect.

I do not believe it is a Moscow cancel.. First - if it was COW..The "W" is way to close to the "O" Also look at the pic below..If this was a Moscow cancel it would stop at the end of the YELLOW line..Not centered at all above Canada.. The RED line is more centered which would take another 4 to 5 letters to make it equal.
Maybe.....
Moncton
Montreal monaghan monahan monckland moncrieff moneymore mongolla monquart montague etc..etc.

I like the method and analyse Robert, but wrong one ;-) The stamp and cover we were discussing was originally posted on 3 October.
Using the Library & Archives Canada website shared as part of that original discussion and the Boolean search capabilities available i.e. *oscow, the only result returned was Moscow. Using the same site for the stamp you liked, the search results were "2000 result(s) found for "mon*" and for this one, you are correct; it is anyone's guess as to what the originating location might be... Thanks for looking though!

The notes on the Canadian map stamp are fascinating. Missing & added islands. I guess I have to make a note and drag out my Canada collection and my duplicates for close inspection.
