The Independent Orange Free State was occupied in part by the British from March 1900 and then annexed in the October of that year. The War ended with the Treaty of Vereeniging when the Orange Free State lost it's Independence. Stamps of the Cape of Good Hope were overprinted 'Orange River Colony' in August 1900. (Hope to show some soon). Later, Orange Free State Stamps surcharged and overprinted were in use until the first issue by De La Rue in February 1903. SG#139-47.Wmk: Crown CA, Perf 14. I am reminded of a funny TV advert for Typhoo Tea back in the day...."I'm a Gnu, how do you do..." Oh well.

I have the 1d somewhere. I found it when I was sixteen years old in a collection that was given to me. At the time, it was the oldest stamp I owned. My first little treasure started me on that trek for old stamps.

In this week:
Unused and used examples of the OVS 1d yellow card. They appear to be different shades, the bottom more "orange" than the top.
The used is postmarked from VENTERSBURG and the stamp indicium is cancelled with the barred numeral 21 of Ventersburg.
The crest between the words BRIEF and KAART contain an illustration of an orange tree in addition to the stamp indicia.

In today's mail:
An uprated OVS message/reply card to Germany.
I have no idea what the message says, I presume something philatelic as I don't believe the sender expected a reply with the OVS postage reply portion.
I do read a reference to a kartenbrief on Mai 4
I note the different value spellings - "Half penny" on the stamp and "Halve penny" on the card indicium. I wonder if these cards were uprated and sold as such at the selling post office?
Lots of fun exploring new ground.

JeffS the green halve penny rated card BINNENLANDSCHE DIENST is the domestic card rate within the Orange Free State. International rate of 1d meant additional half penny stamp to send to Germany. Since both outward and return cards have the additional half penny I suspect , unless contradicted, that your surmise of the stamps being fixed by the postal clerk prior to sale may well be correct.

JeffS - the note on the different spellings is interesting. The "halve" on the card is Afrikaans/Dutch for "half". I find it fascinating that the stamp says "Oranje Vrij Staat" in Afrikaans (Orange Free State), but then has the value in English. Small aside - "ij" in Dutch is actually a single unique vowel sound that is difficult to transcribe in English, not two letters. I think of it more as a "Ÿ" - a "y" with an umlaut.

In this week's mails:
Datelined Kaal Valley (diamond) Mine VENTERSBURG ROAD July 7 1895.
Message gives a description of the local situation and reference to "500 kafirs" and "150 white people" I understand the word kafirs, in a new spelling - Kaffirs - is a grievous racial slur today.
I thought the descriptive message worth at least what a more ordinary card would be. I regret I can not decipher the signature of the sender.

In Last Week:
A fairly complete and readable example of this postmark. What do "specialists" call it - a squared octagon?
I've seen a similar from another town but I don't recall. can someone post a nice image of the other town?
I've found reference to at least 7 other towns using this style.

The past few months have been spent on the postal cards of the Orange Free State. The "provisional" cards printed locally in Bloemfontein by C. Borckenhagen printers are a quite complicated and a definite challenge. These are the unbordered versions. I have a few of the printings with borders which still await mounting.

A recent addition to my postal card collection: Ladybrand O.R.C. to Lahore, India 2 DEC E 07 & 3 DEC K 07
The following additional postmarks noted: Bombay 24 DE 07 (front and back) Lahore 27 DE 07 (3 different) … / Window 28 DE 07 Rawalpindi (now Pakistan) Lahore Cantt (now Pakistan)
Addressed to Capt. H. B. B. Riall 2nd West Yorks, Lahore, Punjab, India Endorsed “Please Forward to Regiment” Lahore in address crossed out in red pen and amended unreadable Additional endorsement in red at lower left corner, unreadable Prior to the Mohmand Expedition of 1908 … I purchased this thinking it a contrivance due to the late use of the reply card. I was quite pleasantly surprised to find on the back a printed New Year’s greeting “dated” 07-08 with the year 1908 confirmed in the printed greeting.
The card is weary from it’s travels, but that’s okay with me.
I’ve searched online and learned a bit of the history of the British in this part of India. Any help with the annotations on the card (or anything else relevant) is most welcome.
