Thinking of kostia84 's interest in pharmacy, I thought maybe a thread on famous doctors and other medical themes might be nice. So start it off, the famous Persian doctor Avicenne, one of the founders of medicine:

This one is my type of doctor. Barry Marshall received Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2005 together with Prof. Robin Warren, "for their discovery of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori and its role in gastritis and peptic ulcer disease". Not as long as 30 years ago, gastritis and subsequent peptic ulcer caused suffering and disability for millions and millions of people around the globe. The true reason for the disease was unknown and therefore, there was no treatment, making the disease a life time burden. What Dr. Marshal did in early 80's is actually cultivating the bacterium Helicobacter pylori from the stomach content of peptic ulcer patient, swallowing (!!!) this culture, developing severe gastritis shortly after, finding the bacterium in a biopsy taken from his stomach, eradicating the bacterium by antibiotics and fully recovering from the gastritis: thus finding what causes the gastritis. Nowadays, a two-week antibiotic treatment is enough to cure gastritis, a life-time incurable disease from just 30 years ago. To the best of my knowledge this mini-sheet, is currently the only one commemorating Dr. Marshall. A stamp commemorating Prof. Warren is in the block of four in the same set with the mini-sheet. Even though, I'm far from being a fan of stamp surge done by some small countries in order to extort thematic philatelists, I'm glad they issued this mini-sheet.

Very nice post and pertinent, Xavier hrdoktorxas a bonus to our members it is good to know that the Mycobacterium Tuberculosis bacteria was very resitant to antibiotics: M. tuberculosis, then known as the "tubercle bacillus", was first described on 24 March 1882 by Robert Koch, who subsequently received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for this discovery in 1905; the bacterium is also known as "Koch's bacillus". M. tuberculosis is considered to be multidrug-resistant (MDR TB) if it has developed drug resistance to both rifampicin and isoniazid, which are the most important antibiotics used in treatment. And this does not stop there as other resistances were noted in medicine............(ref: myself an others)PPD was the test used (sub-cutaneous) to see if patients had contact to the Bacillus.......X-Rays were the NORM ! Tuberculosis still exists in some poor Countries of the African Continent...and elsewhere....etc. do not want to give a "course". In North America, very rare but has to be ruled out in certain cases, even today !! Vaccination was never "great" René

Gerhard (Gerard) van Swieten was born in Leiden (Holland).Because as a catholic he could not applie for a leading position at the university,he worked as a prominent practical doctor. In 1845 he became the personal doctor of the empress Maria Theresia of Austria. His position was more like that of a health minister. He reformed the Austrian medical system and the medical training at the universities. Most famous he became for his fight against superstition. At the time the myth of vampires was very widespread. He travelled to the east of the empire to prove that vampires were nothing but a myth. He was the the model for B.Stokers Dr.van Helsing in his book Dracula.

issued Dec.5th,1937 Leopold von Auenbrugger, born in Graz/Styria was a disciple of van Swieten. He invented the "Percussion" as a method to detect illnesses, mainly of the thorax. The invention of the stethoscope by the french doctor René Laennec (1781-1826) helped the "percussion" to become a standard diagnosis method, what is a must for a doctor till today. (The stamp has a damaged lower perforation. For nearly fifty years I wanted to replace it.But then I got so used to it,that I now would not even think to look for a better one !)

issued Dec.5th,1937 von Rokitansky was born in Königgrätz in Bohemia (today Hradec Králové),but spent all his adult life in Vienna. He "invented" the pathology as a exact science, revolutionizing the diagnosis of illnesses. He spent all his scientific life at the university of Vienna. Knighted by Emperor Franz Joseph,he hold many honorary posts in the world of medicine.Among those was his membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.A mountain in Antarctica is named after von Rokitansky. He was also a politician and philosopher, who demanded humanity has to be paramount of science (in proximity to Arthur Schopenhauer).

Like so many famous Viennese,Joseph von Skoda was born in Bohemia. In the town what gave it´s name to a very nice kind of beer Pilsen/Pilzen. He studied medicine, mathematics and physics in Vienna, where he became a doctor and medical teacher. He developed the diagnosis by percussion and ausculation to an level, what is still today the standard tool of diagnosis in the medical profession.
