Domestic Aerogramme (Uprated) Dated September 23, 1992
I called this a domestic aerogramme based on the fact that it was uprated to send it to the United States.

Before Ethiopia joined the UPU in 1908, a private Swiss-run local post printed stamps and postal stationary to take mail to Djibouti, where a Somali Coast stamp would take it on to its destination.
A lot of these cards were precanceled and sold in Djibouti to passengers of ships that stopped there. If there are a couple of years between the Ethiopian and Djibouti postmarks, and if the message says "greetings from Djibouti", it probably was not sent from Ethiopia.
This card appears genuine: it was postmarked Entotto/Addis on Nov 11, 1899, stamped in the Ethiopian post office in Harar on Nov 21, then got a 10c Somali Coast stamp postmarked Harar on Nov 25. It was stamped in Djibouti on Dec 1, and again on the Reunion to Marseilles paquebot on Dec 3. It arrived in Winterthur on Dec 15, 1899.
It only took one month to get from Addis Abeba to Winterthur in 1899, but it took four months to get from a German auction house to my mailbox in 2021.
Here is the back:
I welcome any observations about the card, the sender, and the recipient.
