Here is another item in my collection with postmarks from my hometown and county. This one I picked up in 1999 at a small auction in Toronto. It was listed as a Unitrade 2 on a folded piece. It seems like it was a wrapper for some correspondence or a publication. It was mailed from Liverpool, NS January 25, 1859 to a merchant in Halifax, NS. It has 4 clear margins. I love the margins on that ! Beautiful cover. David

Binging through the weekend's accumulation, and lo and behold. This deserves a re-Tweet. We're lucky Mssrs. Lordly and Stimpson saved their stuff, lucky it reached the philatelic market, and luckiest of all you made the sacrifice on it's behalf.

I never thought the day would come that I would own a Nova Scotia 1 shilling but here we are. This one comes with a 2003 Vincent Graves Greene Philatelic Research Foundation certificate stating it is a Nova Scotia Scott Specialized 6i used showing letter "A" of SAUNDERS watermark. Their place of operation is less than a half hour walk from where I live so if I decide to have the certificate updated I should be able to arrange dropping it off.
It is cut rather close for my likings but lovely colour.
The scan of the back when blown up made the 'A' hard to see. If a renewed study determined that it is just a regular unwatermarked 6 I would still be comfortable. I will mull over going to the expense of a renewal of the certificate. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I have never submitted a stamp for verification. Congratulations on your acquisition! There might be hope for me. Patience for thé right article. David

I have five small pre-confederation Nova Scotia covers with the 5 cent blue Queen Victoria Unitrade 10. This is the only one that went to the USA with the 10 cent rate. This is also the only one I have with a Queens County postmark that is readable. The village of Milton is just a few miles up the Mersey River from the town of Liverpool. The first post office started operating in Milton in 1860 and there is still one there. This cover dates to February 19, 1865. Covers with the 5 cent stamp are fairly common so often sell well below catalogue. Condition is always a bit rough on them and foxing is common.

hdm You might want to wait a while before sending your stamp to VGGF for re-certification. I've heard from a reliable source that VGGF is snowed under because of the pandemic and it could take several months before your stamp is returned. I could be wrong about this; but, as I said, my source is pretty good, so I would try to contact them before sending your stamp and get an estimate of the time they will need to process it. I have sent a couple of stamps to them for certs; but it was before the pandemic and the wait time was still several weeks. The process is quite simple and you can get all the information you need from their web site.

I find that stamp quality on cover is usually in much better condition than the cover on which it is affixed. I too have found mine at quite reasonable prices. Still trying to find one postmarked from Colchester County. David

I have gotten past my urge to get reconfirmation so will let it be for now. As I think I mentioned the mailing address is just a half hour walk from where I live and so if I do decide to get a new certification I will hope they will allow me to drop it off and pick it up once complete.

I was looking through my Nova Scotia accumulation and stopped to look at this piece with 3 stamps used in combination for the .05 domestic rate of the time. Kind of sad that I do no have the complete cover. What I find interesting about the piece is that it appears to be a post confederation usage which was allowed although I am not sure how long. The postmark appears to be from Halifax dated UA (January) 30 with 68 below. In my on line searching I did come across one cover from 1868 and verification that UA was used to represent January on some cancels.

Another arrival today was my first real dive into proofs and trial colours of Nova Scotia stamps. I do have one other proof I may share later as I try to understand them more. The first pair on the left are Unitrade 9TCiii on Indian card in the dark slate violet with SPECIMEN in red; then a pair of Unitrade 10P on paper and last a single Unitrade 12P proof on card.

Great stuff HUGH !! I only have the 19Pii specimen in N.S. album and love it valued at $100 in the 2021 Unitrade cat - I do not remember where I got it but my Nova Scotia page is proud to have it I envy yours - buying "proofs" is somewhat a specialty interest of ours - I have proofs for New Brunswick (from 1918 cat-CV has not changed in the 2023 catalog))- I will show in this post Congrats !! Hugh - You probably know (besides 2 Pence issues), New Brunswick is happy with its holdings - I must repeat what I already said in the past......you will not see a CHARLES CONNELL in my N.B. stamp collection and it is an unissued stamp - The history of this "crook" is quite well documented and if you wish to have his face in your collection, you pay too much.........$$...there are various histories re: the elimination of his sheets etc....I have a N.B. stamp history book which includes his false representation on a stamp (at the time) The Postal History of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick 1754-1867 by Jephcott, Greene, Young (1964 edition)But I do have a cover with his face on it(not scanned but I do have this frrom a Auction house) Now Would you pay $20,000 ?René

Further to my post yesterday in regards proofs and trial colours I am now trying to better understand the difference between proofs on Indian paper and on card. Unitrade states that all Nova Scotia proofs are on Indian paper yet they do show up on card stock as well. On line sales often do not differentiate. Unitrade does not appear to have a separate number for those on card. When I acquired my 3 different proofs this week I had forgotten that I already had .10 Unitrade 12P on Indian paper. It was no big deal as I knew I could sell the duplicate on eBay. When the lots arrived yesterday I discovered that the .10 12P was on card stock and I quite like it so I plan to keep it. There is a slight shade difference but not enough that would make me think that it could be a 12TC instead of a 12P. Any thoughts from those with experience with proofs would be appreciated. The image below shows my Unitrade 12 .10 vermillion on white (possibly yellow but I think it is just toned a bit) paper on the left, the Unitrade 12P on Indian paper is in the centre and of course the one on card stock on the right.

Newest arrival Unitrade 9TCiii on Indian card in the dark slate violet with SPECIMEN in red. i won this in an auction for $US20.00 A really good deal. I do not think the seller knew what this was. I had put in a bid for much more than the $20. After winning, I contacted the seller to offer a bit more. It was not advertised as a proof bit just as imperf pair. Seller declined my offer. He was surprised that I had even contacted him to suggest this. It is not often I worry about underpaying for something.

These proofs and trial colours were new arrivals to me last week. The black on the left is a Unitrade 8Pv which appears to be a variety that was recognized and documented since 2000 which is the date of my catalogue (maybe I will update ). It has a faded gold specimen which is common for this variety. That may explain it's late recognition. It is a diagonal and passes over the back of her neck. It came with a 2013 Greene certification. The green is Unitrade 8TCv and the dark violet is Unitrade 8TCx with a portion of the imprint. I am including a scan of the certificate for the 8Pv. It is hard to pick up the specimen but in natural light I can see it. Hopefully it does not fade anymore until I decide to sell it one day.

Colours can be a challenge especially with classics. Nova Scotia is no exception. The 3 pence blue had a 1851 issue Unitrade 2 and then a 1857 release Unitrade 3. A recent arrival has my collection now including 4 off paper and 2 on covers. The recent arrival was part of a small collection that I thought I would probably sell. Now that it is with the others it I think it will stay as I start to develop a better shade study. The first photo was taken in natural light with my iPhone SE and I think is better than the following scan. iPhone image The far left on cover was mailed in September of 1957 which was the year that Unitrade 3 was issued. It is quite dark so I am thinking that is what it is. The one beside it is even darker so I would say that is a Unitrade 3 as well. The next in line is the newest arrival and is possibly a Unitrade 2 blue. Next in line is the palest and possibly a Unitrade 2b. The next is quite bright so possibly Unitrade 2i. Here is where the confusion comes in. I purchased the one on cover as a Unitrade 2 but it was postmarked in 1859 which I would think is a rather late usage. Value wise Unitrade prices them all about the same. As is often the case some of these are cut too close on at least one side which devalues them by quite a bit. Scanned image for comparison. Unitrade 2000 listings. If anyone has a bag full of these laying around feel free to send them on to me so I can continue the study.

Michel lists that reprint in a footnote. However it says, that the reprint was made on thin,hard,"pure-white" paper. Is the shown block aged ?

The actual stamp is whiter than the scan and the same colour paper as the 4 single reprints I have.
Elsewhere it says it was white wove paper. From Stanley Gibbons Philatelic Handbooks, Reprints Postal Adhesive Stamps by E.D. Bacon

A new arrival today is this handsome lightly hinged horizontal pair imperf vertically one cent blacks (Unitrade 8c). About a week ago dgdecker posted an example of this item and I felt the need to sit on my hands and say nothing because the auction I was bidding on was still open. Sorry about that Dave. I would say that this pair is a little nicer than the pair you were looking at. The price I paid was just a bit higher than the eBay pair you were considering.

I was thinking you might be interested in this too so I did not bid. Also it was not in my budget. Now that I know it exists, I will start planning on a purchase. Maybe I should ask for it as my Christmas present this year. i am glad you found a better pair. I wonder if the one I saw was sold. I will verify the seller’s store. Enjoy the new addition. David

Today's mail brought several more nice items that I will share over the next few days. I have several covers with this stamp already but this one interested me for it's historical significance. Andrew Cowie was a prominent business man and politician from my home town of Liverpool, Nova Scotia in the 1800's. Sadly there was no postmark applied upon the arrival in Liverpool. It was mailed from or passed through Halifax on November 15, 1865. The notation on the envelope suggests he replied to the letter on the 29th of January, 1866. He was a member of the provincial parliament at that time. This information on Andrew Cowie is from Wikipedia: Andrew Cowie (July 20, 1798 – October 21, 1890) was a Scottish-born leather manufacturer, ship owner and political figure in Nova Scotia. He represented Liverpool township from 1851 to 1855 and Queen's County from 1859 to 1867 in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. He was born in Auchanbalrige in Banffshire, the son of William Cowie and Elizabeth Milne, and came to Halifax in 1816, settling in Liverpool two years later. He entered business as a dry goods merchant but later acquired a tannery and began to manufacture leather. In 1820, he married Janet More. For a time, Cowie was involved in the lumber trade, an occupation that most Cowie's go into at one point or another. He also operated a saddle and harness shop in partnership with his sons. Cowie also served as a magistrate. While I was home in Liverpool I visited the Trinity Anglican Church old cemetery and found the Cowie family plot. The next photo is his tombstone.

Here is the VARIO sheet of Nova Scotia proofs and trial colours that I have managed to accumulate over the past 9 months. The clippings are from the auction catalogues that some were bought. Prices are the auction house estimates or current Unitrade catalogue values and not what I paid. For now I just find it helpful to have that information. With the trial colours they make for a nice colourful display.

A few more proofs to add to my collection. The first on the left is a P4 in black on card stock. The one in the centre is a 12TC black on India paper. The block of 4 consists of two varieties of the specimen overprint on card stock. The Unitrade numbers of these would be P13i and P13ii .
