What I collect: Cinderellas and some Ephemera from Great Britain, France and Israel plus a few beautiful bits from elsewhere !! Topical interests include Flags & Judaica, the latter with an emphasis on the Jewish National Fund.

Silly me, forgot to upload these a while ago, thanks for the reminder, I am glad someone is staying tuned!!!! This Cinderella block was placed on the reverse of a nice cover I received some time ago.....
Here is the front. BEPITEC 1949 apparently a special flight from Cairo to Belgium where a philatelic show was held in 1949. I searched online and found several similar covers available for somewhat more than I paid so I'm happy!

Wow ! That is one gorgeous cover jimwentzell !! The Great Mosque of Mohammed Ali is beautifully drawn. It is one of THE sites to see in Cairo. Thanks for showing it.

When searching online for images related to " BEPITEC label" quite a few very similar (but addressed differently) covers pop up. Apparently it was a popular cover available at the show for a small fee (?) and thus the many BEPITEC covers still available 70 years later, for just a few dollars (highest price asking was $30, lowest around $8 plus shipping). It must have been quite a Philatelic Exhibition! I'm not sure of the Egyptian angle--the Exhibition label / Cinderella shows an image of a stamped envelope with the phrase " A BEPIPEC du Caire." Arabic script can be seen below the cover in the Exhibition label / Cinderella. Could there have been an affiliated show in Cairo, or perhaps just an Egyptian Philatelic counter in Brussels where one could buy then post the stamps with an Egyptian cancel.....? Did any other countries promote BEPITEC or provide similar labels or was Egypt the only country? So many questions.... My first major Philatelic Exhibition attended was New York 2016 although I had been to many smaller local shows/bourses in the US, Belgium, and Germany. Maybe that's another topic for a thread, " Remembrances of old (or first) Philatelic Exhibitions attended...."

I see the same envelope was also sent to 'Citex' in Paris, also in 1949. The Stamp-like image at top left shows the French version and can be seen 2nd down left side in previous post. It could be that there was an Egyptian presence at both events, rather the same presence, as they moved from one to the other ? Possible ?

jimwentzell........here's my theory. I think it's feasible. King Farouk, whilst sitting with his feet up one afternoon in the gardens of the Montazah Palace, suddenly had a great idea. He would make his call to Belgium and France to get permission to 'copy' labels destined for the 'Bepitec' and 'Citex' Philatelic events. He would change them slightly and then get the Survey department of Cairo to carry out his printing wishes, including the odd unique imperf and mis-perf ! Yeah. They'd done it before anyway so were well tuned in. Then he would ask the Egyptian Philatelic Society to produce envelopes for both Bepitec and Citex which would be 'posted' by the Egyptian Delegation at those events. In future years, so he assumed, everyone including himself would make lots of money. A win-win ! Sadly, the deposed King was not allowed to take his Stamp Collection with him as he sailed away from Alexandria into the sunset, never to see his Bepitecs or Citex's again. Sad isn't it ? End of Theory. Londonbus1....crawling back into the corner.

Londonbus1--quite a workable theory, from what I read and heard about the young King of Egypt. A true collector, of coins too! Perhaps the 29-year-old king (born in 1920) snuck out and hopped aboard a flight to Brussels just in time for the stamp show; I know I would want to get to all the philatelic exhibitions I could afford to go to....wouldn't that have created an uproar!?!
I would think Farouk would have autographed a cover or two at the time if he'd have been there in Brussels, especially as he had an eye for his own collection....that scenario may be a bit far-fetched.
But contemplate, for a moment, what if some undisputedly genuine, autographed Exhibition memorabilia, or misperfed BEPITEC Cinderellas on covers, were to have survived, and turned up one day at auction.....?
That big "what if" could hatch a philatelic-inspired novel, or even something a Hollywood producer/writer might spin into a must-see (for stamp collectors) movie.....and who would play the part of the King.....hi-end philately, royalty, middle-east intrigue....amazing what motivates stamp collectors, isn't it!?!
