Pre-independence Malaysia is a wonderful area to collect, although mint is no longer the cheap as chips area that it was when my father collected it in the 1960s and 1970s. Malaysia is a great example of where the economic transformation from developing to advanced economy post independence led to a massive spike in stamp values as local collectors now had disposable incomes and repatriated colonial and early postcolonial era stamps from the West to build collections. Used has appreciated less, but still many of the better issues used have done quite well. Even today Malaysia is great for new issue collectors, with a fairly conservative new issue policy mostly focused on local culture and events. Malaysia 2023 New issues at Colnect

southafrica1If you don’t already have one, I would recommend getting a copy of the Gibbons Commonwealth and Empire catalogue. There are shades, watermark varieties, and some paper differences on some Malaya issues. Your post reminds me that I have a fair number of Malaya/Malaysia issues waiting to be investigated, including a fat approval book loaded with stamps running from Straits Settlements through to Singapore. Can we add a few more hours to each day? Dale

Also worth checking is Gibbons Brunei Singapore Malaysia regional catalogue which included in-depth coverage of perf and watermark variants for late-1980s and 1990s Malaysia when Malaysia began producing its stamp issued domestically and had a good amount of teething pains in the process.

Just giving this thread a bump to let djcmh and Statesman Stamper know that I moved your posts to this thread on Malaysia. We have separate sub-boards for Malaya and Malaysia, and I am trying to improve the organization a bit. Thanks for your understanding.
