since you all are 1 or 1 so far how about this HK stamp 1863 8c Yellow buff with standard Hong Kong B62 cancel - over a red barred circle cancel with a Capital A - this red cancel is what I am trying to ID - please help I have had no luck in finding any information... The B62 is of course HK so common and well known.,

Hi, my SG comments, 'until 1885 the vertical and horizontal killers were used to obliterate the actual stamps with an impression of one of the circular datestamps shown elsewhere on the cover' but does not go into detail, they reference 'Hong Kong & the Treaty Ports of China & Japan' by FW Webb & British Post Offices in the Far East by EB Proud.

I have the complete HK and treaty port library at home - but Members of the Hong Kong Study Circle have not been able to answer and my thought is that it was posted on board ship and cancelled by the ships purser/mailroom or after being landed somewhere before being sent back to Hong Kong as the A cancel is under the B62 cancel which would perhaps support that idea. It does not appear to be a HK security mark as Rod Sell's rodsell.com/hksmsic/hksmsic.html - has nothing comparable shown. It was bought at Stampex from a French dealer some 6 years ago who said it was in an album of an old French collector who died and the children sold the album to him years after his death...

hkwill, I see that you first posed the question back in 2014 and still haven't received an answer. Perhaps this will go down as one of philately's great mysteries. I hope that someone here will be able to provide you with some insight.

rainbowhugz should be included here too. I can check my Yang catalog when I am home from work this evening. There is a section regarding cancels.

A very interesting item! I have never seen this before, so I'm equally puzzled as the rest. A wildshot is that the 'A' can indicate Amoy? The B62 could have ended on top as an arrival/transit cancel.
Or it could simply be a small and 'unknown' company's security mark.

No luck in the Yang catalog, however, the round shape, and red ink that seems to have bled in spots from uneven pressure or over-inking, remind me of an East Asian seal or chop. Perhaps it is a company seal that was applied as a sort of pre-cancel, or a pre-cursor to perfins. Take a look at this website I found for what I am thinking it could be: Company Chops in China

hkwill I found this in my Yang's - looks similar though it's black and without the "A". I'm part of a Hong Kong Stamps FB group - if you aren't/haven't asked, I can see if any members in the group would have any idea about this particular cancel.

I came across a similar one on this website, scroll down to 'Ship. Circular Grid of Lines'. I'm not suggesting that yours is a forgery rather, it does appear to be a Ship cancel. This would fit in with your cover and hkwill 's suggestion. Daniel
