As you will have seen from this thread so far, the American Philatelic Society (APS) have produced a number of both fine-looking and simple souvenirs for their meetings and Conventions. So compare then the set in the previous post from the American Bank Note Company to the simple effort here for the Convention of 1926 !

The Sports Covers Club of America (S.C.C.A.) of Los Angeles, California produced these unusual-looking labels in 1970. I was beginning to think I should have saved them for Halloween given the rather scary red figure in each block !! What do you think ?
Beryllium Guy might approve of these blocks given that our friend, Mr.Zip has found his way onto the Selvedge !!

Beryllium Guy might approve of these blocks given that our friend, Mr.Zip has found his way onto the Selvedge !! LB1, you are quite right, I definitely like seeing good old Mr. Zip! I suppose he reminds me of my youth, when use of zip codes was being pushed by the US Post Office, and Mr. Zip was quite the popular fellow. I must admit that I am once again surprised to find him on the selvedge of Cinderellas, though. I would have thought that he was copyrighted by the Post Office, so I never thought to see him on sheets of commemorative labels rather than US postage stamps. Once again, LB1, you have enhanced my philatelic education.... thanks! As for the labels themselves, I agree that they are indeed unusual-looking, and perhaps a bit scary. It appears that the red one depicts a discus-thrower who has accidentally dropped his discus, and shows a horrified expression at his ineptitude, and in anticipation that, momentarily, the discus will probably land on his foot! He looks a bit like a fugitive from an Edvard Munch painting, too! From a philatelic point of view, I would also comment that the perforating seems a bit strange as well, since the edge copies will include some very wide selvedge as part of the stamp. It looks to me like there should have been a couple more rows of perforations to do the job properly.

There was a Zippy Collectors Club International during the 1970's. They formed in 1972, based in York, PA. They issued some Souvenir sheets too including for 'Sojex' in 1974 and 1975. He was quite the popular little figure wasn't he. He even had a Japanese Cousin !! Hopefully I'll be able to post a sheet or two more with 'Mr.Zip' in the not-too-distant future.
In the meantime, here are a couple of tongue-in-cheek Souvenir Sheets from the Wilkinsburg Stamp Club of Pittsburgh, well known for Upper Slobbovia and their rather unusual observations of the year gone by !! More to come from this club another time.

ATEX 1939 & 1940.
2 interesting sheets from the Atlantic City Stamp Club. The first one from 1939 reproduces a Hackney & Bolte Penny Post local stamp from 1886. The second sheet is from the following year 1940, a year in which many, many souvenirs were produced by clubs and Show organizers for regional, National and International Exhibitions, many to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the first Postage Stamp, the Penny Black. The sheet here shows a central 'stamp' depicting a lighthouse showing the year '1930' and two Sea Horses (maybe discussing Philately ?) and commemorates the 10th Anniversary of the ACSC, APS Chapter 105 which is inscribed within the design. At the bottom you will see an old picture of the Colton Manor Hotel where both these 'Atex' events were held.
More from Atex another time.

DENVER STAMP CLUB, COLORADO
APS Branch 22 according to the labels shown below. I have not dated these labels although, as you can see, they were issued Se-Tenant with inscriptive types for an event in 1938. Overprints on a couple of other labels of the same design for 1925 & 1926 leave room for more research !! The labels depict the Colorado State Capital Building and underneath the oft used Philatelic Quote "Stamp Collecting, The King of Hobbies, The Hobby of Kings' !! Well, it is isn't it ?
EDIT: The Club labels (Seals) were first issued in 1928 in the 4 colours shown above and reproduced later as in the 1938 types. No further information on the 1925-26 overprints although a Black overprint was used in the first year, 1928 using the same text as shown in the examples above.

Sadly this may not happen. I have mentioned before that the cost of winning Cinderellas is rising fast. Exhibition and Club items from the USA now top that list and are going for truly crazy prices. I am most often outbid (99 times out of 100) and it will be the same for the Mr.Zip items which have proved to be almost uniquely popular. $20+ for a modern sheet that was quite easily copied, is not my idea of a good auction win. But the same goes for older and better material.
I need to win the lottery fast.
Here is something I purchased when the market was stable and 'normal' !!

A couple more ATEX sheets to go with those posted last week. The 1938 Exhibition was also held at the Colton Manor Hotel in Atlantic City.
Below are some examples of some Pre-Show Publicity Labels (USA-Advance labels) for the Atex events covered. You will see they all had the Lighthouse/Sea Horse theme as the central design !

I got curious so I had a look for Atlantic City's connections with seahorses & lighthouses. The seahorse seems to be just a generic thing along the Jersey Shore, sort of like the way we can find all kinds of random stuff labelled with bears here where I live. Seahorses are found in the ocean all along the Atlantic coast (often caught accidentally while fishing and often caught deliberately to put into aquariums, and have gained "vulnerable" conservation status because of it). The lighthouse will represent Absecon Lighthouse, the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey and the 3rd tallest in the US. They have an exhibit on Fresnel lenses that looks interesting to me - those are the things that direct the light from the lighthouse, and the light from the taillight of your car, among numerous other things. The International Stamp & Postal History Exposition was held at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, California from October 28-30, 1988. Billed as California’s premiere stamp & cover event, the exposition hosted the American First Day Cover Society’s 33rd annual convention. It also served as the venue for the first day ceremony of the 13 cent black (Bureau precancel “Presorted First-Class” in red), perf. 10 vertically transportation coil stamp featuring an 1880s-era Police Patrol Wagon (Scott 2258; Oct, 29, 1988). Sam Houston Philatelics (aka Sam Houston Duck Company) issued the below show label for the event. Featured on the sheet (No. 6 in a Series of 30) is a Cinnamon Teal, a small, brightly colored duck found in ponds across the American West.

The Keystone Stamp Club, Philadelphia. Information about this Club is hard to find although I did manage to find reference to a Keystone Stamp Company and the Keystone Federation od Stamp Clubs but that was it. The Exhibitions appear to have been held at the Central YMCA and that was where they held their meetings (on Friday Evenings) according to a snippet from the 'Philadelphia Enquirer'. Still searching both for info and more material !

The Nashville Philatelic Society. 1958 Stamp Exhibition, Andrew Jackson Hotel, Nashville, Tennessee. April 12th-13th Attractive sheet that exists with two different types of rouletting around the central labels. The Nashville Philatelic Society were founded in 1887 and are still going strong today. They have an informative website are on social media with Twitter and Facebook. They seem to encourage young collectors too which was nice to see. www.nashvillephilatelic.org/www.facebook.com/NashvillePhilatelicSociety/

The now defunct New Mexico Philatelic Association (NMPA), founded in 1948 to serve the greater Southwestern United States, was reborn in 2012 as the New Mexico Philatelic Foundation (NMPF). The NMPF, a 501(c)(3) entity (i.e., tax exempt), is made up of regional clubs dedicated to promoting Philately through education and research with an emphasis on New Mexico. I been unable to determine in what year this stamp was produced and in what year the NMPA ceased to exist so any insight from our members will be appreciated.

I have never seen the NPMA labels before so cannot help on year of issue. Maybe they are from 1948 ? Here's a couple of items issued for the 1941 North-East Stamp Club Exhibition held in the Kensington YMCA in Philadelphia. Research tells me there is a Greater Northeast Stamp Club today but is it the same Club?

I recently took delivery of an amazing packet of items won in the Donation Auction mentioned recently in the USA section. What arrived in the packet was way and above the stated items so ....firstfrog2013.......take a bow. An amazing variety which I will be showing in the various threads where appropriate. The sheets below are from the ASDA Show from 1964. 7 sheets turned up in the packet, both Perf and Imperf so I have shown 5 different colours, one that was already in my collection. The show was held at the 71st Infantry Regiment Armory, New York, November 20th-22nd. The sheets were designed by John Nicklin and celebrate the Golden Anniversary of ASDA and the 16th ASDA Postage Stamp Show. Londonbus1.......thanks frog !

THE PROGRESSIVE PHILATELIC SOCIETY, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. Not much was to be found on this Organization.......at least up to now anyway. They did not appear to issue any souvenirs other than for their 'Merry Christmas Shut-Ins'. So here they are in all their glory, 18 of them from the 30's to the 50's. Merry Christmas !! You will notice that for 2 years the labels are of the same design but in different or reversed colours......except for 1954 !!! I wonder what happened then ? Laziness ? Printing disaster ? Lost delivery ? I wonder. Whatever the case, I know that I would have loved to have been 'Shut-In' with other Philatelists every Christmas !!!!!! Londonbus1

CRESCENT CITY STAMP CLUB, New Orleans, Louisiana. For one of those unknown reasons (at least to me), I was outbid on all the other items for the 1938 Annual Exhibition....except for this one ! Bidding went quite high but for some reason or other I won this sheet for a 'normal' price. There were many items produced for the event including Proofs and Colour Trials. The Crescent City Stamp Club was formed in 1932 and is still going today, despite the low membership. Back in 1938 they held their Annual Exhibition at the plush and historic Hotel Roosevelt (also still going today !). From the sheet it might be assumed that there is also a 'Philatelic Society of New Orleans' but I do not believe that to be the case. Noted at the bottom of the sheet is the reference to the APS Convention, to be hosted by the CCSC in the October of the same year. Items for that event have been shown previously. The man standing on his head in the centre is the 7th US President, Andrew Jackson.

Another gem from the hand of Henry Grimsland. One I had not previously seen or seen offered. So I was surprised to pick this one up for a bargain price ! Once again a beautiful engraved sheet for the North Shore Philatelic Society and their Exhibition, Bourse and Banquet of February 1948. That Society have a lot to thank Mr.Grimsland for !! Depicted (loosely) this time is the USS Constitution, an 18th Century frigate, which was named by the US President George Washington. Also known by it's nickname 'Old Ironsides' after a poem by Oliver Wendell Holmes.

In my New Member remarks I mentioned that collect cinderellas relating to the state I live in, Oklahoma. One of my goals for this collecting area is to acquire a S/S or advance label from each Oklahoma Philatelic Society (OPS) annual convention and exhibition. The OPS began in 1932 and its first convention was held in 1933. The earliest that I have, to date, is from the fourth annual convention held at Shawnee, Oklahoma, in 1936. It is in typical souvenir sheet style and reproduces much of the imagery that is on the Oklahoma state flag.

I couldn't find a WESTPEX item on this thread but I am sure that some are posted elsewhere. Anyway, to put that right and to celebrate another WESTPEX show which is taking place this weekend in Burlingame, San Francisco. It is the 59th Annual event. I have been following the build-up to this event via various organizers and Online pages and I have to say it is a very well organized and attended event.....the kind I would love to go to if I ever get to the USA !! So here are a few sheets, courtesy of Beryllium Guy who purchased a whole bunch for me on his last visit to WESTPEX. I will post more another time. Enjoy ! Londonbus1 (and Beryllium Guy )

I did a quick search of this thread and did not see this Henry Grimsland cinderella posted. If it has been, my apologies. I'm not a collector of his work, but do admire it greatly for its clean, uncluttered designs and exceptional engraving skills. This one came to me in a lot of cinderellas I purchased a few years ago and am only now getting around to identifying and writing up for my album.

Judging by the large number of pre-event labels produced, the World-Wide Philatelic Convention held in Detroit in October 1940 must have had a tireless and creative publicity committee and a generous budget. I did a quick count of this event in the Fields/Picklo listing and counted 26 s/s and advance labels, and that does not include the printing and color varieties of each. I wonder how all of these were distributed?
It is not my goal to collect all of them, but the few that I have are interesting and there are several that I hope to acquire in the future. The large label below depicts a cartoon sketch of Ben Nevison. Does anyone know who Ben Nevison was and what he did? Maybe a radio personality of the 1930s or even a vaudevillian, or possibility a humorous wag from the local stamp club?
The second label, The Stampettes, is my favorite, so far. I'd also like to know their role at the convention.
Those that I hope to find are these advance labels: a. sponsored by Pennsylvania Central Airlines, b. Betty Boop, c, Popeye looking through a telescope, d. the firemen of philately, and,e. a chicken laying an egg. If anyone has these labels, please post an image. I'd love to see them.

This is my second oldest souvenir sheet issued by the Oklahoma Philatelic Society. The OPS moved its annual meeting locations around the state and in 1938, the year of this issue, the 6th annual convention was in Seminole, Oklahoma. Seminole is about 60 miles from Oklahoma City, just south of I-40. In 1938, it was the center of a very prosperous oil producing area. When the oil boom was at its peak in the late 1920s the population rose to nearly 30,000 people, today is is around 7,000. The star near the apex of the triangle with 46 in its center represents Oklahoma as the 46th state to join the union in 1907. Prior to statehood, Seminole was in Indian Territory.
