I lack the 1939 Oklahoma Philatelic Society souvenir sheet, but the 1940 issue is in hand. The OPS issued one larger souvenir sheet and three smaller advance labels for its 1940 convention in Oklahoma City. This S/S sheet is printed in black and red on gold foil. Gold foil seems to have been popular in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Some others I have have not faired well as the gold has tarnished and the printing faded. This one seems to have weathered the years better than some. This sheet also commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Penny Black. The phrase "Tops Philatelic World" (top center of the sheet) may have been intended as a double entendre, i.e. the Penny Black tops the philatelic hierarchy of stamp collecting and it is also the initials for The Oklahoma Philatelic Society. The smaller sheets came in three colors, pink, blue, and yellow. The blue label is on piece and I haven't decided to soak it off or just trim it a little closer and more evenly. SH

I am still lacking the Oklahoma Philatelic Society souvenir sheet from the 1941 convention, but here is the one from 1942. The number 46 in the upper left and lower right corners and the stars in the opposing corners represent Oklahoma's place in the union. It was the 46th state admitted to the union. In other threads I have expressed my enthusiasm for aircraft on stamps, covers, postmarks, and for cinderellas as well. Below is one of my favorite aviation cinderellas, commissioned by one of my favorite cinderella originators, Frederick H. Dietz. Dietz was a NYC stamp dealer in the 1930s and 1940s and produced a number of souvenir sheets that were printed and numbered by the National Poster Stamp Society of Chicago, IL. In 1941, Dietz produced a series of three aircraft souvenir sheets "in commemoration of the U.S. airmail stamps of 1941." These stamps would have been Sc. C25, C27-C31. The 8c green of this series, Sc. C26, was not issued until 1944. The aircraft depicted were the Douglas DC-3, the Boeing Stratoliner, and the Boeing 314 "Clipper" flying boat. The s/s below features a photo reproduction of an Eastern Airlines DC-3 in flight. The DC-3 made air travel moderately comfortable for passengers and profitable for the airlines. It is one of America's iconic aircraft. SH

The second in Frederick H. Dietz's souvenir sheets commemorating the U.S. 1941 airmail stamp issue features a Boeing model 307 Stratoliner. It was so named because it was capable of flying at altitudes above weather systems. TWA acquired five Stratoliners and Pan American Airlines put three in service. America's entrance into WW II and subsequent defense needs halted the production of this aircraft. By the end of the war it was obsolete and no others were built. SH

The third, and final souvenir sheet by NYC stamp dealer Frederick Dietz commemorating the new U.S issue of airmail stamps in 1941. This is a recent acquisition and I don't have it mounted and written up yet, but it depicts a Boeing Model 314 Clipper flying boat. Boeing designed this aircraft specifically for Pan American's ocean routes. The 314 Clipper was a huge airplane with four 1.500 hp engines, a wingspan of 152 feet, a cruising speed of 184 mph, and a range of 5,200 miles. The airplane could carry up to 74 passengers, had a galley and dinning room, sleeping accommodations, dressing rooms, and heads. It was used initially on trans-Atlantic routes and from a philatelic standpoint is seen frequently in the cachets of airmail flights. Pan Am also used it on its Pacific routes. A Model 314 Clipper is on the U.S. 1997 famous aircraft series. SH

While not an item in the previously posted series of Frederick Dietz souvenir sheets, this one depicting the Douglas B-19 is in the same style and with similar purpose. As noted on the bottom center of the sheet, it was issued "in conjunction with" the three National Defense definitive stamps of 1940. I find the sheet interesting as the aircraft, while much publicized at the time of its first flight, was never produced beyond the prototype that first flew in June 1941. Douglas designed the airplane per U.S. Amy Air Corps specifications as a long-range bomber and at the time of its first flight was characterized as the world's largest aircraft, and, indeed, it was huge. The wing span was 212 feet and it could lift 162,000 pounds at take-off. It carried more that 10,000 gallons of fuel giving it a range was 5,200 miles. Production did not begin as the engines intended for the design were not available until 1943. Its first flight in 1941 was made with less powerful engines. Today, the B-19 is basically a forgotten airplane. First-flight covers for the B-19 are readily available on eBay in the $5 - $30 range. SH

A few prisons allowed inmates to collect stamps and hold exhibitions of them on site. One of those was the prison at Walpole, MA. The individual pictured on the right is Harry Lindquist, founder and publisher of Stamps magazine and a strong proponent of federated stamp clubs. The NFSC stands for the National Federation of Stamp Clubs. I have not found many prison-related philatelic items. I have one other souvenir sheet, on cover, from the California Mens Colony at San Luis Obispo, and one cover from the Nebraska State Prison stamp club. SH

I did a search of this thread and was surprised to find that there was not a posting of the Sabor of the Midlands cinderellas. If I missed one, I apologize for the double posting. Sabor of the Midlands cinderellas appear in a variety of formats and printing and paper colors, souvenir sheets and singles, imperforate and perforated. It can readily be found for sale on eBay for not much money. The sheet recognizes the twentieth anniversary of Russell Sabor's employment at Midland Laboratories. I have not found much information about Sabor, or where he worked, other than it was in Dubuque, Iowa. Apparently, Sabor, and a brother, were collectors and, probably, one or both designed the issue. Originally, I thought the word at bottom center of this item was Cacoairlustr and that it was the name of a product, perhaps, a cosmetic or hair care product of some kind. A few years ago, however, James Drummond who is, with little doubt, the current expert on U.S. cinderellas, said that I had mis-identified the product. It was not Cacoairlustr, but Lacoairlustr and that it was a cleaning and polishing product for smooth and lacquered surfaces. That solved an on-going mystery for me and I was most grateful for the help. I have always found this an attractive item and it is a part of my Iowa-related cinderellas collection. SH The souvenir sheet: An example of imperforate singles in different colors:

Here is a recent addition to my hometown collection, a souvenir from the Cicero - Berwyn Philatelic Society's second annual philatelic exhibition held in the Olympic Building (in Cicero) November 27-28, 1937. (EDIT July 12, 2019: I recently acquired a copy of this sheet that was printed in dark blue)

A favor-canceled single from the set of four souvenir labels from the 1929 APS convention in Minneapolis, MN. The APS produced attractive cinderellas for its earlier conventions and I regret that I don't yet have the complete set of four for its 1929 show. SH

Four different colored souvenir sheets from the Suburban Collectors Club' third annual exhibit held in the Riverside, Illinois Public Library February 22-25, 1934. The sheets are just over 3.5" square. The club has been an APS Chapter since 1970.

I just purchased those sheets also. I wonder if they came from the same seller ? The sheets below also arrived this week and are another example of items of Philatelic Exhibitions that I have found elusive. Not uncommon but I always seem to get outbid for these sheets and yet last week I won the 4 for less than $10 including postage !! I always find these occasions a bit weird. 1938 Golden Jubilee Exhibition, William Penn Hotel, Pittsburgh, October 8-9 1938The Philatelic Society of Pittsburgh. Sheets of 4 in Green, Red, Brown and Blue with marginal inscriptions. Londonbus1

Here's a few more from that 'World Wide Philatelic Convention' held at the Book Cadillac Hotel, Detroit in October 1940. Included in this group is the 'Firemen of Philately' requested by stamphinger and my apologies for the delay in posting it. Took me a while to connect one of these humourous sheets (some might say 'over the top') with the 'watching of one's scalp' !! I never had to do that at a Philatelic Convention ! Londonbus1......but I will from now on !

It appears that they started numbering the plates on the sheets issued for the 1937 event (2nd Annual, Plates 1000 and 1001). I'm still looking for the 1938 pair, which I assume are plates 1002 and 1003.

Way back on page 1 I posted a letter from the Secretary of the Glen Ellyn Philatelic Club giving out information for upcoming Club events. To the letter was affixed a label on thin(ish) card in the same design as the sheets here, but without the inscriptions. It's unusual to see a Souvenir Sheet with perforations....or would one call this an extra large label ? Mmmm! The Glen Ellyn Philatelic Club were founded in 1937 and are still going strong today. Remainders of the perforated sheet/label were overprinted in 1965 to celebrate 125 years of the first Postage stamp. Note the appropriate corner letters on the Penny Black !

Light's Fort in Lebanon County appears to have had a mysterious and little-documented life. It served many purposes over the years since being built, by Johanes Licht, in 1742. You can read all about it here, there is even a video. www.lightsfort.org/There is even less information about the Lebanon Aero Philatelic Society and Stamp Collectors Club, which must have the longest name of all Societies on our planet !! In the Fields-Picklo list of USA Exhibitions/Clubs, these are the only souvenirs they produced which leads me to believe they had a short life. Unlike the building they depict ! But the sheets, to my eye, are hugely atmospheric and a credit to the club. The year 1940 has a lot to answer for if you are a collector of USA Philatelic Exhibition sheets and labels. There are hundreds !

The Philatelic Society of Lancaster County and the Lancaster Stamp Club gradually merged after the former was founded in 1938. They are still going strong today and are APS Chapter 173. Historical items from the latter can be seen at the link below and makes for a good read. you may even spot a very amusing error on the way !! lcps-stamps.org/history-mission/from-the-archives/The sheet below is the only one listed for the Lancaster stamp Club and shows a reproduction block of the Barr's Local Post stamp.

Here is yet another 1940 ciinderella commemorating the issuance of the Penny Black in 1840. Penny Black commemorations is a sizable collecting area in itself. Being some what slow on the uptake, it took me awhile to figure out what Hapex signified. Residents of the Kansas City often refer to the area as the Heartland of America so I have interpreted Hapex to be Heartland of America Philatelic Exhibition. My wife and her family are from Kansas city, Kansas, so I have spent many a holiday in the area, and even attended a couple of the Kansas City stamp shows. For me, this cinderella is a an association item. Don StampHinger
