I thought I would start a companion topic, to go along with the Composers thread, created by salentin . This stamp pictures composer Niklos Skalkattas (left) and conductor/composer Dimitris Mitropoulos. Mitropolous is far better known for his work as a conductor. reaching the peak of his career as music director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, from 1949-1958, after which time he was succeeded by Leonard Bernstein. Mitropoulos went on to become principal conductor at the New York Metropolitan Opera.

Hungarian-born Szell, became music director of the Cleveland Orchestra in 1946, with the promise to make it "second to none." Under his strict authoritarian tutelage and direction, his promise came to fruition, and the orchestra maintains its rank among the world's elite orchestras today. USA, Scott Nr 3156 (1997)

I wait till today to post this series of Vienna Philharmonic's New Year Concert stamps issued by Austria's Die Österreichische Post between 2004 and 2007. Each stamp features a different conductor under whose direction the concert took place at Musikverein in Vienna. From left to right: (2004) Riccardo Muti (1941-) (2005) Lorin Maazel (1930-2014), who also became in 1980 the first non-Austrian conductor of the concert. (2006) Mariss Jansons (1943-2019) (2007) Zubin Mehta (1938-) For reason unknown to me, Die Österreichische Post stops producing these new year concert stamp after 2007. Does anyone know why? Musikverein in Vienna where the concert takes place: Happy new year to The Stamp Forum community

This stamp was issued by Die Österreichische Post in 2004, with his title written in both German and Japanese. Japan has also issued a stamp in 2000 in his honour. I will upload it once I receive it.

Arturo Toscanini (1867-1957) divided his professional career between his native country Italy and the United States. Both countries have issued commemorative stamps in honour of him.
Left: the Italian stamp issued in 1967. Right: the American stamp issued in 1989.

Speaking of Leonard Bernstein . . . USA, Scott Nr 3521 (2001) Beside the USA, Austria has also honoured Leonard Bernstein (1918 - 1990) with a stamp issued in 2018, on the occasion of his 100th anniversary. The reason why Austrian post paid particular tribute to this American conductor seems to be that Bernstein has maintained during his international career a long close association with the Vienna Philharmonic, having conducted with them the complete cycle of Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler, and Schumann symphonies.

Ernest Ansermet (1883 - 1969) made his appearance in the world of philately in 1985 when the Swiss Post issued a stamp in honour of him. This stamp was issued at the same time as another one for the composer Frank Martin (1890 - 1974).

In 1936, Sir John Barbirolli succeeded Arturo Toscanini at the podium of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, where he remained for 7 years. In 1943, Manchester's Hallé Orchestra was on the brink of dissolution, after more than half of the orchestra (35 members) walked out, to work with the BBC. And this, after having lost 15 members, a few years earlier, to military service. Barbirolli was able to recruit new members, and passionately groomed his orchestra and took them touring across the country. His efforts paid off handsomely, with the musicians matching his enthusiasm, and Barbirolli conducted the orchestra for the rest of his life (27 years). Great Britain, Scott Nr 923 (1980)
