After returning home from an appointment with my neurologist this afternoon, I found that the mailman had once again been good to me.

Found in today's mail, my latest Yvert&Tellier stamp order arrived! Mostly fillers, but there should be a few stamps worth posting.

This arrived today in the mail. Don't you just love their covers? Most old stamps, used out of period, but what the heck! Look at the 2 high value ones! I haven't gone through all the stamps I received yesterday, now I have a pile more! And here I was thinking it was Nuts & Honey. It though, is STILL in Mississauga for the 4th day and counting. If that doesn't move closer tomorrow, I'm complaining.

This arrived today in the mail. Don't you just love their covers? Most old stamps, used out of period, but what the heck! Always a pleasure to receive new stamps for the collection :-) I am curious though - "used out of period" is there a formal definition for this? I have also seen expiry dates associated with some issues e.g. the stamps on this cover from the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR),
DDR Michel Nos. 1346-1348 1968, 21. Febr. National memorial and memorial Sachsenhausen: Stained-glass windows by Walter Womacka (1925-2010) Colnect lists an expiration date of 1990-10-02 for the series.
If you, brightonpete or anyone else can expand on the phrase "used out of period" or comment on stamps with "expiration dates", it would be appreciated...
Happy collecting!

In keeping with the thread's theme though, this appeared in the postbox earlier in the week,
A nice colourful allotment of pre-Euro postage can be seen here and I am especially attracted to the block of stamps based on a sculpture by the Italian artist & sculptor, Umberto Mastroianni (Michel No. 1488).
Happy collecting!

and then there is this one, that arrived earlier in the week, for when the whole world appears to have gone completely mad and you need a sort of " The Milkman Cometh" moment...
With this cover featuring Spain's Europa Holiday stamp of 2004, Michel No.3951 and as in the short film allusion above, I am under the umbrella off to the left...
Happy collecting!

Re : out of period cancels
A lot of mail I receive from France has older stamps. When I was at Stampex last year,I purchased stamps from Vincennes Philatelics and asked about this. They considered one year after date of issue would be the normal time limit.Anything after this they considered it to be out of period.I also see stamps for sale on Delcampe with the notation cancelled in period. Thanks stanley64 One thing I forgot to mention....back in the 1910-1940 period, there was not a mad rush to issue new stamps like today,so stamps are often found with cancels from later years . Bob

stanley64 : I always looked at "out of period" as about 1 year from date of issue as well. But like what anglobob said, it all depends on when the next stamps were issued & how many. Looking at that envelope, there are a number of old issues, with values far less than what a letter requires today. So I consider them "out of period", but just as collectable. I have a large stack of covers sent to me in a box. If I ever get around to soaking some of them off, they'll be in my collection.

I just received this letter today, and at first glance I thought....here we go again, another example of out of period posting. However, after closer inspection ,it turns out that the 2,45euro values are from the 2014 Tresors de la Philatelie sheet. These were printed in limited quantities and I am sure not many were used postally,so this was a nice surprise.Good cancels too and only a month to get here.....

This envelope from a UK seller was received Friday,
no stamps or postmark on the front.
On the back a Deutsche Post customs label and seller's return address.
I contacted the seller to find out about it. His reply
"Yes we have switched to DHL Global/Deutsche Post for our international mail. They don't use stamps,"

Anglobob I also use a change of postal rate as part of my guide in considering « out of period cancel » As some countries may have had annul change in postal rates the one year period is a good guide. For my Canadian collection I use the rate change as my bar for our of period use. I would add a « in period » to my collection over the « out of period ». Just my preference, and I do not really spend much time on it. does a stamp used in period carry any more value over one that was not? david

New and interesting, at least to me, in today's mail,
a UK Royal Mail "stamp", no value but endorsed "up to 100g."
It appears printed to demand, can someone give me the background on this to keep with the cover, please.

And today brought an ink-jet slogan from the UK:
"The poetry of logical ideas" - Albert Einstein

According to the Norvic Philatelics web blog, it was put into use February 29.

Hi JeffS , There are two manufacturers of machines that print these, Wincor & Hytech. A couple of different typefaces, noticably different size of print. There are sets of birds and animals, as well as special packs. From 2012 year codes were included. The animal sets were sold at the various years London Stampexs.

feebletodix guyana1230 Thank you for the info. Came out in 2008! With all the philatelic correspondence I have done with the UK, this is the first example I have ever seen. I need to stick my head out of my stamp cave more often!

Today’s arrivals. The one with all the French Europa stamps came from a dealer who lives in Belgium. Guess he uses French system for shipping savings . All are from 1980 or 1978. 8 of the stamps cave cancellation marks. Dated March 16, 2020. Quick service. 3days. Takes 4days for a letter here to go 4km. you can see clearly to date on the second cover. 6 days to cover 1500km. It is from one of my favourite Covers dealer. The stamp is one of the type where Canada Post allows to to produce your own stamp. I am sure these do not have catalogue numbers. Happy Stamping to all. David

One of the last letters I received before suspension of service. All of the stamps would be considered out of period, nearly all come from miniature sheets issued between 2001-2003. The French postal service did a good job here with the cancellations.

Here are two covers received earlier in the week both from Canada and as seemingly the normal these days, uncancelled.
The first has some interesting items including a couple from the Capex International Stamp Exhibition issue of 1978 (Scott n.º 754 & 755), a 2$ Montreal Olympic stamp (Scott n.º 657).
and I think my favourite, the 2¢ definitive pair depicting a totem pole and having the Wpg. 1-bar phosphorous tagging (Scott n.º 455p).
The bronze sculpture, "The Diver" by R. Tait McKenzie M.D. (he studied and lectured on medicine as well as being a sculptor) that is depicted on the 2$ Montreal Olympic stamp will be a welcome addition to the art & artist thematic collection!
This second one also has some interesting items including the 1¢ issue from the same definitive series as in the first envelope shared, but what captured my eyes though was the Christmas stamp block-of-four with its depiction of Canadian Aboriginal Art. This particular stamp shows Genesis, by Diaphne Odjig (Scott n.º 1965) an original and founding member of the Professional Native Indian Artists Association and another welcome addition to the art collection.
Happy collecting!

Anglobob I recently read the shipping info from a seller in Bolivia that Bolivia has no mail service and that purchase would be shipped from another location at the post of $9. Makes the price of a $3 set of stamps more than a bit pricy.

Here is one that arrived in the postbox this week,
Ok, this may not be the most colourful of items to pass through the mail slot recently, but due to a mis-reading of the postcode, the package made quite the side trip. Cancels reading left to right, Torres Novas 2020-04-01 (2350), Machico 2020-03-27 (9200) & Alenquer 2020-04-03 (2580). Final destination Nadadouro 2020-04-06 (2500)
It does seem rather fitting though the package would make its way via Maderia given that the package contained Crawford's text, "Penguins, Potatoes and Postage Stamps" with the main subject being the island of Tristão da Cunha as named after its Portuguese discoverer. Two islands in one go...
Happy collecting!
PS. So far, the text is a good read and I am enjoying it ;-)
