As whales are mammals and marine mammals at that, let us create a new thread to highlight them in our collections, whether stamp, cover or cancel.
Before the philatelic material though, a few factoids about whales; just like land mammals whales possess a number of characteristics that are necessities among the many different mammalian species:
- Breathe air – whales have lungs and require air to breathe, so they are unable to breathe underwater like fish and amphibians
- Produce milk – like other mammals, whales nurse their young and feed them nutrient/fat rich milk during their early stages of life until they are able to consume solid foods on their own.
- Are warm-blooded – whales too are warm-blooded and receive their energy by consuming food on a regular basis. In order to protect themselves from the cold most mammals develop a layer of fat or blubber which provides them with additional calories during food shortages and helps keep their vital organs from freezing.
- Give live-birth – whales carry their young internally and provide their calves with nutrients through an umbilical cord until the calve is born.
Happy collecting!

Here is one whale to begin with and I know there are others,
Killer Whale (Orcinus orca) from Mongolia's 1980 series " Antarctic animals and exploration"
or from the same series, the Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus)
Happy collecting!

Marine mammals were my first or second topical collection. Here is a hand drawn cachet on a naval cover for the U.S.S. Narwhal.

Pictorial cancels can be just as much fun as stamps.

Whales from Greenland. Here are three series, issued in sheets, booklets and souvenir sheets. Stamps that fluoresce white are from sheets. Those that fluoresce yellow are from booklets. I just noticed more glitches with my album pages. I'm also not very consistent either! They'll do as they are!

This thread would not be complete without the $10 whale stamp from Canada, shown here on-piece. Keen observers of this forum will recognize the Edmundston, NB, postmark as something sent by renden .

Happy collecting!

I love that $10 stamp. I bought two sheets of 2, have used one and here is the other sheet... The fluorescent doo-dad's on this stamp is cool - be sure to have a look!

Thanks brightonpete for at least one of my copies of the Canadian Blue Whale issue. With stamp in hand, I was able to check out the fluorescent "doo-dad's" and you were right - pretty cool ;-) The question that comes to mind now is, was it done to scale? Happy collecting!

When scanning the above stamps from the definitive set of 16,issued on March 15th,1984, I mistook the "Crab-Eater" on the L.1.- stamp for a whale. But it is,of course,a seal. But the two stamps show (nicely) the differnces between seals and whales.

August 21, 1963 Israel issued a set of stamps based on the Book of Jonah Chapter 1 & 4. On the tabs of each contained a whale silhouette Sc.242/244. and the words "Joyous Festivals 5724" in Hebrew plus Arabic and French inscriptions. I am still whaling! FDC of full set can be seen in the Israel covers thread.
