ajkitt, I think you could put it in the one which the sender address (if it even have one) is based in or otherwise the postmark. In this case, we have a Canadian stamps with a Canada postmark so -> Canada. The Machins that was added-on is very interesting though. Did they even count it as postage? Nghia

Hello Graham, What a lovely set tied to a piece. The "Seahorses" are my favorite stamps from KGV. I'm drawn almost entirely to engraved stamps and I think the Seahorses are simply spectacular art. Rob

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

I was looking at my Hong Kong collection this afternoon and saw where I had mounted this 1958 Great Britain British Empire & Commonwealth Games commemorative stamp amongst them. I made no notes about why it was mounted there but I do see that there is a partial postmark with Chinese characters. I did find a reference on line where military personnel could use Great Britain stamps anywhere. Possibly it was from a diplomatic posting. Too bad it was not on a cover but to me still interesting enough to keep.

I agree! My first thought when I see an intriguing cancel like this is, “Dang! I would sure love to see the entire cover on which it was used!”

Some time ago I was delving through some kiloware material when I came across an unusual cancellation on a Queen Victoria 1d Australian (Queensland) stamp, it had been cancelled in Marseille, thinking this to be unusual I contacted Mr Mick Bister of the France and colonies philatelic society in Great Britain and sent him this scan of the stamp that I had found......... Almost within the hour he replied with these comments > "It is such a pity that early collectors removed interesting stamps from the covers! A great loss to postal historians. The stamp has indeed been cancelled upon arrival at Marseille (in France). You can see part of the département name of Bouches du Rhône at the bottom of the cds. The letter or postcard was unloaded upon the ship's arrival at Marseille where it was sorted for onward transmission to Paris. Here it would be resorted for its final destination in France or beyond. Noticing that the stamp had missed the Australian canceller, the French postal clerk cancelled it with a Marseille cds.before putting it into the Paris bag. It's certainly unusual to see a Queensland stamp with a French cancellation but how much better it would have been on an entire cover." I thanked him very much for his assistance and information given on what was an interesting find. So remember not to remove a stamp from its cover until you have checked it out !!!

There is a thread for stamps with foreign postmarks. thestampforum.boards.net/post/94220/threadUsually they have come from mail posted on a ship on the high seas. Once a ship has left port mail can be given to the Purser , franked with stamps from the home country or the country just left. On arrival in another port the Purser hands ship mail to an agent or to the post office where it gets the foreign cancel and onward transmission. Very often there is a cancel or handstamp that says PAQUEBOT Now Bob that Ecuador defies the usual use of foreign cancels on GB or GB cancels on foreign…..which is ship mail or paquebot items. Not many ships sailing from Ecuador to Bradford🤪🤪🤪😀😀😀😀

United States Slogan Cancel on Dominica Sc69I spotted this stamp in the 10p bin at the Charing Cross Market in London a couple of months ago. It is damaged (tears visible on left side), but I liked the U.S. cancel on a British colonial issue from the Caribbean, and the price was low for an interesting item. Comments welcome, of course! Dominica, Sc69, 1½p Deep Brown & Black; Design Seal of the Colony and Portrait of King George V, Issued in 1933 Postmark: U.S. Slogan Cancel: BUY U.S. SAVINGS BONDS (ASK) YOUR POSTMASTER

Chris, Beryllium Guy , to quote me from an earlier post in this thread: "According to TPO & Seapost 'In 1892 the Universal Postal Union (UPU) decided at a meeting in Switzerland that all ships were their own sovereign territory while on the high seas, and outside territorial waters, and that a passenger could write a letter, add a stamp of the country the ship was registered in, and put the letter in the ship's mailbox. From there the letter was taken to the nearest post office in the next port of call by a member of crew or the purser." Now, in your case, the stamp was added while the ship was in Dominican territorial waters and the mail was taken to the nearest post office in the port of arrival, in this case, somewhere on the US coast (Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco or New York) for cancelling and onforwarding. Daniel

Many thanks for your post, daniel. Perhaps I should take my own advice to other members and read back in the thread to find the answer in cases like this. I will amend my post accordingly, and thanks again for your response.

Hi Graham , I have not been aware of the Southampton MB until your examples.
For well over 100years the French have had marks “BM” For “boites Mobiles”, Post boxes on coaches, trains and ferries to allow travellers to mail letters. So I believe your MB is a post box on the British cross channel ferries .

Firstly a happy New year to everyone. In the latest purchased lot is this GB KGVI 2 1/2d cover with an unusual postmark. It has a nice Montreal 1941 CDS along with V ... - boxed cancellation. On the reverse is printed Manchester Liners Limited. I have found out a little information about the liner company as follows "Manchester Liners Ltd. Formed in 1897 after the opening of the Manchester Ship Canal in 1894 and as a partner to Furness Withy & Co. Sailings were mainly to Canada particularly for the cattle trade, but Galveston and New Orleans sailings were also made for the cotton trade to the Lancashire mills. In 1901 a joint service with R. W. Leyland & Co to Philadelphia was inaugurated and in 1906 a service to the River Plate commenced, but these were not a success and regular sailings ceased. Services to the Great Lakes started in 1952 and in 1970 Manchester Lines became a subsidiary of Furness Withy & Co. The parent company was taken over by C. Y. Tung, Hong Kong in 1980 and Manchester Liners ceased trading as a separate entity in 1988. Although mainly a cargo company, many ships had accommodation for a limited number of passengers." There is a list of the ships used by this company: www.theshipslist.com/ships/lines/manchester.shtmlCan anyone let me know what the V...- part of the cancellation is? Graham
